Look what Black Friday got me!

On Friday we went to BB to get a few items. I first had a brand new 40 inch insignia for my poster frame. I put it back as I did not want to spend $180. So we go over to the iPads and they had the iPad minis miss labeled for $224. So we snagged that before they changed the price.

The whole day I was second guessing not getting that tv. So we ventured to a few BB but all out.

Saturday morning I start checking BB online and all out, oh well. Then decided to look for open box and a location by me had one. So off to BB before opening. After finding it in the back I picked it up and tested it in store. Two other customers wanted to know if I was taking it, I said yes. It was marked $161 but missing stand screws. So I asked a manager and said they would give it to me for $139, sweet! I'm not using the stand anyways.

So got wood today and did most of my build. So here it is. It's going to be hung with French cleats. So it can be lifted right off the wall. I still have to fill brad nail holes, corners, and paint. Total cost is $175. What do you think?

Thanks.

Yep, just usb stick for now. Just design some headers and footers in Photoshop.

The framing as the mount, is an awesome idea. Very nicely done.

So where are you getting your digital movie posters? I've used the pay
sites, but lately have been collecting from:

http://www.impawards.com/

You might want to add some top and bottom cooling vents to the frame,
or shim out the frame from the wall slightly.

Are you simply scaling to fit?

Thanks guys.

For movie posters I'm just searching the net but thanks for that link, it will help.

I have only used a few posters to get the idea. Now I need to download a bunch. As for scaling I'm using photoshop to make my own headers and footers. I might use them or just have the posters with top and bottom black bars, or design coming soon.

The frame sits about 1/4 inch all the way around off the wall. I might put in a 80mm fan at top with holes on bottom. I don't leave it on right now for hours so fine for now.

I designed the frame and TV to be one so its easy to take off the wall to get to the USB stick. I might add an extention usb later on. I originally was going to use 2 French cleats as shown but ended up only using one. I also used foam tape between the TV and frame so no rattles.

I would think the frame sitting a 1/4" off the wall should handle ventilation.

I was also thinking a usb extension cable would be a nice improvement.

So you don't Photoshop your digital posters to a 1280x1920 native resolution then?
I was leaning that way.

There's also a pay website that is very extensive and has much larger resolutions.

I just resize the image with a width of 1080 and keep original aspect. So that makes it the correct width and the top or bottom can fall within a few pixels., still has black bar at top and bottom. If you take the image and make it native resolution the poster would be stretched top and bottom.

I wrote down 1280, but should have wrote 1080x1920.

Gotcha. I understand how you are doing your posters.

I was thinking more along the lines of doing a near resizing, and then cut to
1080x1920, if the poster doesn't have details that extend out to the edges.

Thanks!

Nice, I dig the idea of keeping the TV enclosure inside the frame. Nice and simple and looks awesome!

That one, yes....

These pair were simple cut and paste into a 1080x1920 image. (Low hanging fruit...)
A few I have played with, might just work scaled slightly oversized, and
a 1080x1920 cut works.

And some are so loaded with print or detail to the edges, that an added
header saying something like "Now Showing", or "Coming Soon" is a simple
way to achieve a 1080x1920.

And maybe some

Ever seen Mcascio's digital poster movie where MainLobby fills out the 1080x1920 resolution with information?

The Cinemar Home Theater Construction Thread

Which makes me wonder if maybe subdividing that hdtv panel into two frames, might return the original poster aspect, and allow
for simple editing to flush out a 1080x1920 frame with additional information, such as "Coming Soon", " Coming Attraction", etc, to fill out the panel's use?

In my original post you can see the header and footer I made in PS to use the black space. I did that for a quick test. I still need to make some coming soon and now showing stuff.

I believe his is running off a pc with the poster program. I wanted mine for now simple off the usb stick.

We're on the same page then, but I was thinking more along the lines of a physical separation
on the poster frame, and mimic the older style movie poster light boxes at the theaters.
(Might be an "age gap" thing... growing up with more traditional style theaters, then todays media
complexes.)

That's a good idea too. I can make a PS file with the border. Then I can insert the poster and whatever text I want.

I hope in the next few days I will be able to play with PS. Just to busy recently.

The installation looks great! If your interested, I actually wrote some software specifically for this type of installation. It would require a PC to be connected to the display, but the software can automatically download posters and metadata (ratings, rottentomatoes scores, etc) as well as show trailers overlayed on the poster. All with very little user interaction. You can try it out for free. See the links in my signature for more info.

I've been playing around with a bunch of digital posters I have, and I can see
myself settling on 1080x1600 and then adding a 1080x320 header (to the bottom
for myself).

Those that don't scale to 1080x1600 (but most seem to), I have been scaling to a wee
bit little wider then 1080, and then use a cut and paste to 1080x1600.

Here's the Terminator Genisys 2015 digital poster that was 1753x2544 (second attachment) and got the above
treatment to end up at 1080x1600 (first attachment). I gave up a few pixels per side, and a few off the bottom.
With the usual AVS down rez I expect.

I tried the program before I bought the tv. For some reason it was making my laptop run at 100% and freeze. After I closed the program through task manager I cannot get the exe to run again.

I tried it again and as soon as it pops up with regristation it says it has to close as the program has encountered a problem.

A thread bump, if nothing else.

I've been messing around with around a hundred digital movie and tv show posters, and
the majority and be resized straight up to 1080x1600, or given a resize and small digital trim,
to hit 1080x1600. Then I've been cutting and pasting these to 1080x1920 panels, with a header
blurb.

I was thinking a wider framing of a rotated hdtv could lead me to a more theatrical light box
look, and eliminate the tall/wide look, while still leveraging the simplicity of your idea.

And if animated gifs work in this manner, I could see doing some scrolling headers.

Digging the setup. I just recently started on a similar project. On thing I ran into with my Vizios is that the firmware on the TVs would only recognize a maximum of 217 posters, and in preparation I had accumulated quite a few more than that. Also wasn't too keen on the max display time built into the TVs. I ended up getting a couple Raspberry Pi units, and programming them to run full screen slideshows. This allowed me to have full access to all of my posters, and set the display time of the posters to what I wanted (2 minutes each).

Here's my display so far (not trying to be spammy).

This allowed me to have full access to all of my posters, and set the display time of the posters to what I wanted (2 minutes each).

Here's my display so far (not trying to be spammy).
Never thought about the raspberry pi units. I have no experience with them so I'm going to look it up.

So how are people setting up their poster database for a usb drive?

I have no idea if there's a limit on files for my hdtv, but I already have 1,100 plus posters to
organize and was wondering what others are doing?

I have not done anything more as I have been busy. Look up your tv manual to see the max limit for pictures. I just put all my posters on the flash drive and set the usb to slideshow random.
