Hoping to get a soda fountain for my theater. I've worked in enough restaurants to know that they can get messy... both internally (gunk in hoses) and externally (floors and whatnot).
I can handle the internal cleaning but I'm concerned about leaking and making messes all over my floors. The ones I've used in restaurants were always messy but those were also rarely maintained properly.
I just don't want to deal with sugary mess attracting bugs and all that.
If you put one in, make sure you've got very good backflow prevention. Carbonated water leaking back into your plumbing will leach copper from your pipes into your drinking water, which can be poisonous.
I had a soda gun at my last house. Loved it at first, but the novelty wore off pretty quickly. The main issue that I had was that syrup only came in huge quantities and had a fairly quick expiration date. In all fairness, I'm not a huge soda drinker, the soda was in the basement when which we didn't use often, and there were only two of us in the house.
If you have a lot of soda drinkers in your house, or have a lot of get-togethers, you may not have the same issues. I just found that I'd wait until we'd have a party and buy two boxes of syrup. A month or two later, they'd have expired and there'd still be 75% of the syrup still left.
