Hey Volley, great work...building one myself, got the 24x18 box on sale at Michaels (talk about free advertising...) but want to know what font you use? My cousin is a graphic artist so i'm having her make some stuff up for me. So if it's not too much trouble...the CARAMILK secret, if you please?
Thanks,
Bud

I have all the fonts I used in my sign available for download with the graphic(post #72). I just did a search for art deco fonts and found this site. The font I used for the main title is "Anastasia".

Much thanks to Volley for the initial inspiration and to Dachavez for the Photoshop file.
I trotted off to Kinko's and Michael's and -- Tada! -- here it is.

Cost me $28 total ($15 shadow box, $13 printing), though it looks like it cost $100 or more. I opted not to backlight it as I have a front light very close to it. I also swapped out Dachavez's Sony, Yamaha, and Klipsch icons for HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and DVD icons.

What do you think?

Thanks a million guys! I absolutely love it.

The art deco one is Anastasia. You can find it online for free.

First post here - and I am using it to thank Volley for the fantastic print I just received today! Absolutely a terrific job! I highly recommend his work for those of us who are 'graphically designed challenged."

Thanks again, Volley!

I am having a lot of trouble trying to use GIMP to modify the psd file from dachavez.

In particular, GIMP doesn't continue the neon glow and the gradient.

Trying to get "Really Useful Productions" as the theater name.

Any ideas about how to keep the integrity? The psd doesn't open in my ancient photoshop 5.0

Many thanks!

I've never used GIMP before, but I did download it and saw what you were talking about. I usually tell people to just download the trial version of the software if they need to make a quick edit. If you tell me what logos and other copy you want, I can make the edits for you. I can turn it around pretty quick and send you a flattened TIF for printing. Just let me know!

Does anyone have additional vector logos (.eps) they can share? I would like the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD logos.

kej2u, where did you get your logos?

Thanks for the help... I'm working on my project, too.

I use http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/ or I go to the companies website and look there for marketing materials. If all else fails I use Google images and look for the highest resolution picture I can find. Somebody on the forum had logos you could download from his site...I'll try and find it for ya...

Thanks for the help... I'm working on my project, too.

I used google and found the logos that way. I had to change them up a bit to get them all-white (magic wand select, invert select, delete, invert select, fill white -- that sort of thing). If anyone wants to host the file, I can send my revised psd file to work from. I had a bit of trouble using dachavez's layer mask, so I simply copied my theater name layer and made it white translucent, then used the lasso tool to cut out the arcs.

I also changed the dimensions ever so slightly (to 8.5 x 19.5) so the graphic wouldn't get clipped in the 9 x 20 shadow box's bezel (as dachavez pointed out earlier.)

I found the member who hosts a bunch of gear logos...mheadroom...gallery page is http://www.tinstudio.com/gallery/. Just become a member and you can download the full res images at 3000x2400.

BTW: I updated the zip with the PSD at 8.5x19.5 since kej2u's sign turned out so good. Thanks kej2u!

Have you considered using LED rope lighting, which creates far less heat than incandescent rope lighting?

If not, I'm a little worried for you guys, after reading some of the warnings on http://www.centsibleholidaylighting....leshooting.htm.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading a "DIY backlit movie poster box" thread that used incandescent rope lighting, and had a picture of melted rope lighting found on the inside after heavy usage. I wonder if anyone can find that thread and photo I'm referencing...

Anyway, make sure you monitor the temperature of your DIY lightbox, and don't leave it on unattended.

Anyone know of a good source for LED rope lighting that is competitively priced with incandescent rope lighting?

Thanks guys for the help on the graphics. That brandsoftheworld site really had what I was looking for.

Yes, I had thought about the LED lights, too, but they are quite expensive compared to the other. Though the LED does offer the Cool White, which is my personal preference over the yellowed incandescent.

Ebay lists them sometimes at half off, but I found a few places. You're looking at like 9ft for $50. Granted, since they are brighter you may not need as long of a run.

Anyway, hope to get the rest of my parts this weekend.

I would like to put back lit movies posters in my stairwell. I know Kinkos scans posters but I used to have a link to a company that would print transparencies that large but have lost it. Does anyone know who will print this size ?

Hi everyone,

I have looked at the bransoftheworld web site.....but can't find two logos I am looking for. My 1/2 finished theater will include a couple of high end older mediums.....Beta HiFi and Laser Disk. I can't seem to find anything for logos for these. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Jay

Just an FYI: my local Home Depot had a 13.5' LED rope light for $39 and change. So, if you plan on leaving your marquee on a lot, perhaps the increased energy efficiency would help defray the additional cost of the LED version?

Again, just something to consider to mitigate heat buildup inside the box.

Great work here everyone! These are very cool!

Dachavez, I love your sign! I want to do something similar to your sign for the bottom of my basement steps heading into my theater area. I tried editing yours, but couldn't do it because my version of Photoshop is to old. Do you think you could help me with 4 changes to your sign?

Anyone have any ideas about the backlit material that Kinkos has. This material lets light through and is slightly diffuse. Would the lights show through?

The choices seem to be glossy photo paper or this tranlucent backlit material.
Since this project is only 1.25 ft2, the price is 12 - 20$.

Which paper are you using?

dachavez, thank you for your help with the modifications to your sign. They look great and I couldn't be happier!!!

I added my sign going down the basement steps heading into my Theater - Rec area. I didn't make mine backlit because it's underneath a light. Plus, I figure I could always add it if I wanted to anyway.

Poster box frame = $12
Printing at Kinkos = $15

Volley,
Can you produce a box office sign for me? Just like you produced for Gismo1 except
the name of my theater is Boyd Cinemas. I'll donate funds for your time as well. I
would need that file to create a movie poster size, so that i am able to put in a light
box. Your time is greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot!!!

I have updated the file with the option of either "Concession Stand" or "Welcome" in neon at the bottom of my file. You can download it at:

http://www.refreshf5.com/avsforum/theater_sign.zip

Let me know if there are any questions or if you would like me to make modifications to it.

Thanks guys! I don't have a concession stand(yet), so that wouldn't have worked for me, so I decided "Welcome" would be more appropriate!

I also thought about switching the "Welcome" and "Enjoy the Show" ("enjoy the show" in neon) around, but in the end I obviously decided against it. Just another option if some people maybe want something else.....

Thanks again for your help dachavez!!!!
