Hi, I'm the proud owner of a new big screen TV and am finding that I need to rethink some of the existing lighting in my living room. What do people suggest as far as ambient lighting for placement behind the TV? I've found a couple LED light bars but i'm not sure how well they would work.
Old thread, I know. But I read the suggestions here before picking up some rope lights today. I might take the TV off the wall so I can get the lights a little more even, but I'm happy with it, turned out pretty good I think.
Doing a tad bit of researching, I find http://www.eclipsetvlights.com/ are perfect. While many movie watchers are far from having a dedicated HT, everyone will find the need to have some kind of light on while watching tv. Remember your mom's advice: Don't watch tv in the dark...you'll go blind. (oh wait, that's something else) This lighting kit worked out perfect for me. They're exceptionally small, very easy to install with their adhesive backing (I used masking tape), and the customer service is 2nd-to-none. How many companies these days will actually go outta their way and call you at home to answer a question you pose in an email?
Thanks for the shout out here on AVS. We had no idea this thread existed, but glad to see that there's plenty of love for Eclipse TV Lights .
For all those smart people out there who are on the fence about which ambient light kit to use, here's a coupon code for all those at AVS. Just enter "AVS20" to get 20% off your entire order on our website. Shameless plug I know, but I think you guys all deserve it.
Still go questions? We'd be happy to get back to anyone, so just drop an email (info AT eclipsetvlights DOT com). Thanks!
The wall behind my TV (currently a 50" DLP on a stand, the face of which is about 2' from the wall, but it's soon to be replaced by a 60" plasma to be wall mounted as tightly as possible ... hopefully only a couple of inches at the most) is a warm clay/brick red ( http://sklenar.info/images/ht/listening/PICT2119.JPG ) as opposed to the old recommendation of the Kodak neutral grey. Does the 6500K light temp matter as much in this case? Or am I really just providing eye strain relief with the bias lights & light color/temp really won't matter as much?
I think 6500k is more for calibrating your hdtv. Personally, I choose the color for ambient light in conjunction with watch I'm watching. Different movies just look better with certain colors on the wall.
Glad to help. You're going to like them. One thing you'll notice...the closer to the wall these lights are mounted on the tv, the less 'halo' glow will be projected on the wall.
About the best the arrangement I could get on this bedroom tv. As this one is mounted pretty high on the wall and tilted down, the lights on the bottom do not spread as well as the others. Doesn't bother me, though.
Eclipse reads this board. I received my order today and a refund on my S&H. I need to get a friend over to help me take the TV off the wall, but I've plugged the lights in and confirmed they work. I'm very pleased with Eclipse's customer support!
That's great! Yea..their customer support is one of the best I've dealt with. I was exactly sure how I wanted my lights positioned, so I just taped them on the back of set. AND.....they still are. heh. Mainly cuz I wanted to be able to tweek the angle of the lights vs. the wall. Enjoy them.
Ruh Roh ... my large TV appears to be too large for the large light set. I guess I'll move these on to the bedroom TV and figure something else out for the living room.
We've been getting requests from some of our customers for an LED kit that's even larger than what we offer. For now, we have been providing two extra LED strips and connections. We are calling it an "expansion pack" and have offered it already to a few select customers with really big TVs. It's not active on our store yet because demand hasn't quite peaked but its only $19.99. Email me directly "info (at) eclipsetvlights (dot) com" if you're interested.
In the future, we are likely going to offer an XL LED kit with 8 or more LED strips. Keep an eye on our website www.eclipsetvlights.com for updates.
Also, if you do plan to move your LED kit, we advise you use some new double sided tape to ensure that the LED strips stay put. The stickiness of the 3M surface on the LED strips can wear out if it is removed from original position.

That's exactly why I chose to use masking tape to temporarily attach the lights. I knew I'd be moving them around. Sure looks like it's just a matter of getting them positioned right. I actually balled up the tape to make a make-shift wedge to get a better angle. Looking at the picture, seems like they're just too close to the wall or not at a good angle, more than using enough light strips. I say this cuz of how close 'my' bedroom tv is. 7"....5"....2.5" (top/side/bottom) Hope you get it worked out.
@EcpliseTVLights - it's a 70" TV, hung 1.25" from the wall. 63.6" wide by 36.5" tall. I've got the lights attached with scotch tape for now. I was concerned about coverage when I simply held them out in front of the TV, so I played it safe.
I was able to get the two lower side lights to the bottom of the sides by angling the top side ones (not quite, but close to 45 degrees), that's whiy the side top lights are much dimmer ... they're set much further "in" on the back.
I got caught up in the Women's College Basketball tourney last night (and more to watch tonight and tomorrow). let me dig out the tape measure and do some thinking. I'm not sure two more would be enough to give an even light on this TV. I have to admit ... it IS a monster!
@flyingdog - hmm ... building up a wedge to angle the lights off the back ... interesting. I hadn't even thought of that! I'll have to play around with it. Thanks for the idea!
Yikes....70"....that is a monster. Not quite as big as the 140"er "in/of my dreams". But 70" would do..
Yea, I would almost bet if you could get those things to the very tipsy edge/angle it may help. I feel kinda bad bragg'n up the lights without taking in all considerations on your set. I would almost wager that red (mauve) wall is suck'n up some brilliance. Guess that's why gawd invented paint.
Hopefully, Eclipse can also work it to you're liking. I'm sure they're very familiar to various setups.
Not to worry @flyingdog ... nothing for you to apologize for.
