I still say that if you are covering in velvet any way why not just use a 1/16 drill bit? It is much easier to get the fiber through the bigger hole also.

This is a bit different project. I've built a pedestal style dining room table with a glass top. The fibers are going into the pedestal part of the table so it will light up/twinkle under the glass top. The pedestal is 2' x 2' x 3' high hollow cube built from MDF and painted with hammered silver paint (I left the bottom of the cube open to install the light unit). The glass top simply sits on top and is 54" x 54" x 1/2" thick. Perfect size to sit 8 people around. I have a Star Ceiling Designer system that will be installed. So the holes will be drilled into the top of the MDF cube (right underneath where the glass top sits) and maybe on the sides of the cube - I haven't quite decided yet the exact locations. All the guts of the system will be hidden inside the cube.

We've been using the table for almost a year and it's a wonderful dining room table but it will be awesome once the fibers go in!!!

That sound really cool, I EXPECT to see lots of pictures. Having the correct size holes does make sence now, good luck.

Yep that's the one. I'm pretty sure I had to buy a new collet to hold the smaller drill bits :-/. It's like everything now days, they seem to make the real money in accessories. It was well worth the money though.

Cheers

Did anyone successfully set up IR programming with Star Ceiling Designer's SCD-2012 modules? I don't have a Sony remote, so I tried setting up my Logitech Harmony 890 remote to emulate a couple different Sony TVs, and fired off a bunch of the commands to the SCD base station while in "Edit IR Code" mode, but no 0-253 code ever appeared in the box in the lower left of the GUI as expected. The Harmony remote doesn't let me set discrete codes, and I don't have another remote for it to "learn" from, so I have to pick a model number of a Sony device to emulate. If anyone has an idea of a particular Sony device (TV, VCR, etc) to emulate, I could try that. Otherwise I'm out of ideas. Are there some tricks to getting IR to work?

I also have a Shooting Star module which the base station doesn't recognize. Since SCD is no longer in the picture I'm going to try replacing the XBee wireless chip to see if that fixes the problem. Has anyone had to try that before?

In addition, I have a bunch of 0.5mm fiber left over if anyone is interested.

Thanks.

Please keep us informed. Did Oliver sell the company? Is he available for tech support?

Any update here? I am interested in making some panels with spare oc703 I have but I need to know how to combine the panels and what product is ideal for the stars. I have been searching in the forums but it doesn't look like too many recent projects have included them. Anyone else notice that?

Not really, he basically said that life got in the way and that other priorities were more important.

He did right for a final batch of customer orders but anyone who got his product is pretty much on their own as far as support.

I did notice someone selling a discounted fiber optic star kit on the AVS sale ads. Might be a great solution for someone.

Any of you "orphaned" owners of SCD modules having trouble setting the options (color, dimming) on your modules? I've got the hw and initial sw setup complete, and it seems to be working fine. The color and twinkle units light up with their default config. But I can't seem to get to any of the screens required for custom settings. Apparently, you need Adobe AIR. I installed it, have reinstalled it, tried all kinds of things, but the system doesn't seem to recognize it. Any advice?

So I was thinking it would be a great idea to upgrade my computer. Now with a new computer (and Windows 7 vs. XP) I am in need of the lastest version of the SCD2012 program that was available the Oliver's website (star ceiling designer) was up.

Can anyone PLEASE send me a copy of the program, so I cna update my computer and control mt modules? Thanks in advance,

-Giovanni

Hello,

I know this is an old thread, but still hopefull.

I am finally getting around to installing my Star-Ceiling Designer kit and found I may not have a complete set of software or instructions.

Does anyone have the SCD2012 software and would be willing to provide some minimal help?

Thanks

Does anyone know how to contact the developer? I'll see what I have, but I never thought I'd need to have all the stuff and instructions backed up, ie the developer would disappear.

Does anyone have any knowledge about Oliver's controller? I've had my ceiling for ~ 5 years and I think the controller is dead- if I power cycle, all stars come on white, but I cannot dim them or rotate colors etc. Am trying to figure out how to get a new controller...

Does anyone who used Oliver (Star Designer) have any photos or other documentation that I could reference? I had a lot going on when I did my install about 5 yrs ago and can't find any documents. To make matters worse, my panels and light sources are very difficult to access, so I am hoping to see photos, documents, instructions etc so that I may try to reverse engineer a controller or find another manufacturer (DIY or commercial) who has a controller that would work with my existing panels. It seems that the panels and fiber optics are more or less the same from one star ceiling to the next, and I am hopeful that the RGB light source and method of daisy chaining the panels (ethernet to a circuit board) are similar enough that someone else's controller might work. Does anyone have any ideas, given that Oliver no longer seems to be reachable?
