The only downside to basing an HBO series on this great book I can see is that it's already been done, in the 1995 made for TV movie, Truman, starring Gary Sinise. Sinise was great. Still, HBO could cover a lot more ground in a miniseries than the movie was able to do in only 135 minutes.

McCullough was on Charlie Rose today. He talked about how he let HBO make the book because he liked Tom Hanks.

Supporting actor is tough. I think Morse's performance was the most moving given his character and how he portrayed GW. Dillane and Wilkinson of course were fantastic but I don't think I've teared for a happy occasion watching TV in a loooong time such as Washington's inauguration.

Was that for the performance or the historical significance it was portraying? As beloved as Washington was/is, that was a powerful moment, not only in US history but in the show as well.

As for an Emmy nomination, I don't believe Morse had sufficient lines to qualify. I do think he would win if there was an Emmy for making the most of the lines you're given.

I've said it previously, Morse didn't portray Washington, he was Washington. It was as if the inauguration was an old Pathe News newsreel, only in color.

Well, absent any 300 year old members, I don't think any of us really know what the Father of Our Country was really like, but I do think that Morse's interpretation was stellar, the best I've ever seen anybody "do" Washington. It was brilliant in its....I dunno....minimalism, I guess.

There's a tendency to portray Washington as larger (certainly, his shear physical size helped intimidate both enemies and friends), and somehow better, than average men - even of that point in history when there seemed to be a surplus of above-average men designing not only a new country, but an entirely new form of government. Certainly, his disdain for the trappings of power is not only admirable, but at the dawn of our republic, absolutely necessary. It set the proper tone going forward. We would not be just another monarchy by another name. Were that more men like him, dedicated only to service to their country, would see fit to enter public life today.

I'd say both. True he didn't say much but acting isn't just speaking.

It should be noted that this miniseries took home the most Emmys and won Outstanding Miniseries.

John Adams was one of the best historically based miniseries I have ever seen. Paul Giamatti's win was particularly sweet. I have always thought that he got jobbed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences when they didn't even nominate him for an Oscar for his wonderful performance in Sideways. That was scandalous!

I can't think of a bad performance by Paul Giamatti. I especially liked him in American Splendor. That was a superb job. His first memorable role, that caught my eye, was in Private Parts.

Does anyone know if the miniseries will be released on BD? I would like to get it, but I want to hold out for the BD version if I know it's in the works. CC has the SD version on sale this week for $35. Not bad.

Won't HBO release their entire library on Blu-ray at some point? They never miss a chance to make a buck, or a billion of 'em. Surely this series will be no different.

That's what I assumed, especially given how well it was done. But I thought I heard somewhere here on AVS that it was not going to be released in BD so that left me wondering. I only mentioned the SD version because it is on sale at almost half off, and the fact that I have a great Toshiba HD-DVD (XA2) upconverter player, that does amazing things with SD discs. I prefer to buy all new discs in BD format certainly, but I haven't stopped buying SD discs altogether either especially if it's an older title or unavailable on BD.
