Ferguson would be my choice but Kimmel should have been done by now since its all ABC has for late night.

SD keeps me away from Kimmel, unless The Tonight Show or Conan are repeats I won't watch it...

How many cities don't clear Kimmell live? It is delayed an hour and a half in Kansas City, so we wouldn't see it in HD even if it was HD.

I believe Leno and Letterman are also pre-recorded earlier in the day or evening, as are the later shows. The question is whether the local station is taking them live off the network feed or delaying them, since few stations have the capability to delay the HD feed.

For the record, our ABC delays Nightline and Kimmel by a half-hour, and at least a couple of CBS stations out here have been known to delay Ferguson to slip in a syndicated show after Letterman. So it could be an issue.

But is it an issue in Kansas City where even the ABC station's local news is HD?

Views are strictly my own unless otherwise noted.

It could be. Recall the issues that local NBC affiliates had in the Mountain Timezone tape-delaying HD broadcasts of the Today Show. Local networks need the technology to record and playback the HD feed. This technology has relatively little to do with broadcasting HD news.

They just need to hook up a TiVo to time-delay the feeds from their satellite dishes. ..... oh well, maybe it's slightly more complicated than that, but shouldn't be.

The View is delayed in daytime and it is not aired in HD so I guess it is.

Craig Ferguson's studio uses HD cameras but the rest of it is SD digital. Since it's at least that far, and there is already quite a bit of HD in that facility, I suspect it will go HD before Kimmel does. A possible jump to ABC by Leno could change that timetable.

Last season of DWTS, Kimmel did HD bits and it looked like they were in his studio.

Then they could automatically fast forward through the commercials too, so I don't have to worry about it!

Tonight's promo for Craig during March Madness was HD. Somewhat ironic since Craig's not even new tonight or tomorrow because of basketball. But I don't recall ever seeing an HD ad for Craig during Letterman's show (which I admittedly do not watch often but have watched a few times recently).

A couple of months ago (maybe more) Kimmel said that his teeth were hurting after the execs at ABC made him bleach his teeth for updates to the show in the near future. I just assumed it would be HD, but who knows.

When they put Craig Ferguson in HD, you will know that the transition is officially over. All content, on all channels, at all hours is in HD.

I love Craig Ferguson. But, his show won't be shot in HD until there is a true surplus of HD cameras throughout the entertainment industry.

WCBS-DT recently started broadcasting The Late Late Show from the CBS HD feed and even with the show still being SD the PQ is 100% better.

Jimmy Kimmel Live never looks clean on the SD feed on WABC-DT, I think it's cause WABC is still upconverting the ABC SD feed for non HD abc programming instead of taking the SD shows off the ABC HD feed.
Does anyone get Jimmy Kimmel Live from the ABC HD feed in SD and is it any cleaner?

Someone in another thread hints about a change to Jimmy Kimmel Live in April.
Could the show go HD on April Fools Day?

It is more complicated than that. First off, Tivo doesn't have an HD-SDI, ASI or component input. It would require a Tivo with around 3 terabytes of mirrored storage, multi port record and playback, selectable control ports and a database that would be accessible to a variety of automation systems.

Edit: It also must also record and play back closed captions and up and down converted versions of the program and a few other things I'm sure I've forgotten.

Uhh, no. Craig Ferguson should be HD before Carson Daly. Even the TV Guide channel should be HD before Carson Daly. Hell, Carson Daly shouldn't even be on TV, period.

On an unrelated issue:

And about tape delaying network programming, that's not a valid excuse for NOT going HD. Sooner or later, an affiliate will time shift a program for some reason. Some are much worse than others(in the case of putting syndicated crap before Craig Ferguson). But for a network to think it isn't worth HD 'because some affiliates time shift' is bull. Same thing could be applied to syndication. "Well, not every affiliate has HD recording capability" so what's the point?

Jimmy Kimmel is not sent down in SD on the ABC HD feed (at least in the Central Time zone, but I'm sure others are the same way). On the HD feed, Nightline comes down in HD, then when it is over, it just goes to color bars for the rest of the night. Kimmel is only available on the ABC SD feeds.

I'm not sure if it officially still stands after all the transition dates were moved around, but in the past ABC did not allow affiliates to centercut and downconvert the HD feed for the SD channel. Affiliates had to use the ABC SD feed for the SD channel, and could only use the HD feed for the HD channel.

ABC was supposed to switch over to an all MPEG-4 HD delivery system to the local affiliates back in February, but that date got pushed back until June along with the DTV transition.

There's no way that rule is still in place. ABC has repositioned their bug on the HD feed, and all SD cable and satellite customers are receiving the center-cut version of their ABC affiliate's digital feed anyway.

Another Craig Ferguson promo. This time an upconvert with wings (because it was just clips). Maybe these two ads are just a sign that the CBS promo crew is continuing its transition to all HD.

This either hasn't been the case or hasn't been enforced for quite some time. WCHS has been downconverting the HD feed for the SD channel for almost two years now I believe. Before ABC switched to a 4:3 bug, the WCHS SD channel was bug free much of the time.
