I just watched the first two episodes and both were pretty boring, actually extremely boring. The preview for the 3rd episode looked equally as lame.

I"ll give it two more episodes but if it doesn't show significant improvement I won't even bother with DVR'ing.

Do they take full advantage of their non-broadcast/cable network location?

I was amazed Showtime picked this up in the first place. Especially by going the cheaper route and not remaking it.

Anyone expecting the production or writing standards (or T&A) of Californication or The L-Word will be disappointed. This was a mediocre show at best in the UK and not even worthy of a main broadcast channel there.

No, not at all!

At least that would have made it more interesting.

Well for a show about a call girl, that's ridiculous. That would be like a Cheech and Chong movie with no smoke.

I'll give the pilot a chance and that's it.

I have already watched the series by other means, and yes you do see the bits towards the end of the series. I am a fan of Billie Piper, it is an ok show, but by no means as good as other showtime programs.

Well there is nudity so they didn't sanitize it that much.

If there was some way of internationally sharing information and a search tool to find it I would imagine most of it would already have been made publicly available.

Well, besides her 2-season stint on 'Dr. Who', Billie Piper is an unknown here in the U.S. I gather she was some sort of pop singing star across the Pond before she got that role. So, perhaps she hasn't risen to a "big" enough star yet to demand a no-nudity clause in her contracts; maybe she has. We'll see how the first couple of eps go, but if there aren't some pretty gals "getting their kits off" for the sake of realism (at least I think that's how real call girls do it), then this show will not occupy much of my viewing time.

Normally, I'd be willing to sit and watch Billie Piper read the phone book. But it doesn't sound like it would be worth adding showtime for this. Guess I'll have to settle for Dr. Who reruns.

From what I remember they originally planned to remake the show but then they decided to leave it when "they fell in love with Billie Piper's performance."

Which could be spinspeak for "It was cheaper just to leave it and all of the writers are on strike anyway so we don't have anyone to do the rewrites."

You beat me to it. I really like Piper, too, but this show sounds like such dreck, even her charms are insufficient to convince me to watch -- and I've got Showtime.

Billie Piper is hot BUT this show, at least based upon the first two episodes, is not!

You can view the first two epsidoes here. Select 'Watch Preview', enter 'Black Book' when asked for password.

Nudity (or lack thereof) aside, the show is just not interesting as presented (once again, based upon the first two episodes).

Oh for heavens sake lighten up. This is NOT Shakespeare.

This is an 8 episode TV "light-hearted drama" based on a book by a young lady who worked as an escort in London.

There is no "morally uplifting" message in each episode. This show does not say that what she is doing is "bad". It just shows her doing a job she likes. Oh yes, there is some nudity in episodes 3, 4, 5 & 6.

This is mainly a vehicle to allow Billie Piper to show that she is not just an actress who works in Childrens TV ( Doctor Who) but will take on roles for TV for adults (not p0rn).

I just get the preview. Have the HD DVR set to record and I get showtime HD so I will watch it there.

That was very racy! I was amazed on how much sexual topics/images there was during the 30 minute program. Billie Piper is good stuff indeed.

It must have taken a fair amount of effort to produce such a dull show about a hooker.

I liked it, can't see what all the negativity is about. Sorry there wasn't enough T and A?

It was no Dexter, but fun for a summer show. Rose looked hot.

At the very least, some decent T & A would have compensated somewhat for all the other stuff that was missing. There's fluff, and then there's Marshmallow Fluff. This was more of the latter quality.

I'm surprised that no-one has commented on how bad the PQ is for a show that is supposedly HD. Looked like upconverted SD at best. Not even as good PQ as Hell's Kitchen.

Unless Showtime co-produced it rather than acquiring it I'd be very surprised if it were shot in HD.

The series was commissioned by and initially aired on ITV2 in the UK (a digital-only minority network with relatively low ratings).

My gut feeling is that it will have been shot 576/50i 16:9 SD and flickered in post to give it a 576/25p "film look" - in the same way that Doctor Who is shot and posted.

If that is the case, the chances are that the show was treated as 576/50i and standards converted to 16:9 1080/60i in real-time, rather than being treated as 25p and slowed down to 24p with 3:2 added.

As a result it will have interpolated fields/frames and look noticably worse than the US series of Hells Kitchen, which are shot 480/60i native. (Obviously it will have a different motion characteristic as it has "film look" processing to give it a 25Hz motion characteristic)

Like Sneals2000 said, it's no surprise that a show that Showtime bought from the brits was filmed in 576p widescreen. but upconverted to 1080i for broadcast here. I didn't think the PQ was bad, but agree that it certainly didn't appear to be HD.

I wondered. I figured it was soft just because Dish network was doing HD-lite again.

I didn't think it was bad. I only saw one episode. I didn't think it was great. The madam was my favorite. Dolomite has nothing on her. She needed to have a cane, a Cadillac and some platform shoes and she would fit into any 70's gangster movie no problem.

Billie lost weight, too. She looked rather toned.

Personally, I would rather have "Cape Wrath/Meadowlands" back. However, I'll take this until "Californication" comes back.

Yeah! More 'Meadowlands'! At least there are two of us. One of the most powerful "final" scenes I've ever seen on TV, at the end of their first season(or "series" as they call it across the pond). That scene will haunt you a bit, and certainly leave you wanting more.

here's the info on the way why it looks the way it does.

St. Anne's, colourist Paul Staples says of the drama, Secret Diary Of A Call Girl was filmed on HD DVC. Director of Photography Tat Radcliffe made the decision to use a Pro35 adaptor, which then allowed him to use Zeiss High Speed 35mm film lenses. This was combined with a Black Net Diffusion filter, which softens fine details and reduces harsh contrasts, to give the production a lush 35mm feel.
