Well supposedly they diverged from the books a long time ago.
The only season that had much to do with the books was season 1. Season 2 had a little bit. After that, the only relationship between the books and the series were the characters' names.

It only took 'Under the Dome' about 30 minutes into the first episode last year to reach that point.

Count me in on riding this down to the very end, and it will end with a whimper instead of a bang,I fell asleep at one point during the show.

Collecting the season, but stopped watching after 2-3.
I'll save the agony for a rainy/bored day.

Actually I'm having a hard time remembering last season. Must have been
the same apathy. Hopefully there's some small amount of comedy in there

Didn't they say sometime last year that it's possible for Sookie to use up the last of her "light" and then just be a normal person. Seems like the finale will have her using it up to cure Bill and it will also make him a normal human, because reasons.

Yeah, but her great-great-great-grandpappy also told her that magic couldn't cure Bill's disease. Of course, it wouldn't be the first time this show has directly contradicted itself.

There is a cure available but Bill doesn't want it.

That's why they were showing all the flashbacks of his pre vampire life. I guess in this universe, vampires get sentimental.

Didn't realize there was a True Blood thread here on AVS...but IMO the ending more or less made going back and watching the rest of the show's run impossible unless you stop at the end of Season 3, let alone Season 5. Maybe even Season 2 if you miss the Maenad LOL.

Not only did the last couple of episodes feel drawn out, but many of the surviving Bon Temps characters just felt abandoned (Sam, Laffy), and while Jason's ultimate fate was hugely ironic, his connection with Bridgette was too fast, too quick. Among the vamps, only Pam and Eric felt like they had an outcome true to their established characters (if you disregard the Eric flashback in France with the mullet). Bill's demise was more of a metaphor for the creative exhaustion of the show rather than where he would have went at the end of Season 5.

I will say Sarah's fate was over the top ridiculous but a lot of fun to watch, though.

Noticed at the picnic that Jason has 3 kids with the
Gal from Alaska. But, it appears that Sam's child is
Still an infant. How did that happen?

Sam left town with his very pregnant girlfriend in
The previous episode. Shouldn't Sam's child be older
Than ALL of Jason's kids??

This series was always a guilty pleasure, but faded quickly. What, 2-3 seasons were good?
4 for some people, but once the main show runners were headed to better paychecks.....
you get the idea.

My contention on Dexter was the first 2 were very original & very very good. After that, it hinged
on Guest Actors (need I say season 4) or something that kept it alive (comedy or determined fans)
but was obvious after the first 2 seasons - Paychecks.

Breaking Bad was something I didn't catch until it was over, but it seemed to keep a full 5 seasons
alive with strong story, although not as easy to to enjoy from a standpoint of subject. Let's face it,
a life destroying drug and a likeable main character going insane is a very interesting topic. It was
not fantasy. The end was not happy, but it was an end that's rare.

The best stories are compact. Anything more is chewing on monetary concerns not in the viewers
best interest.

Incredibly lame finale. During the interminably long wedding scene, I was wishing a vampire would put me out of my misery. And Sam did have two kids, one of which was the right age. Can't really blame someone for missing it, as that final scene was incredibly rushed thanks to (see above).

Did love Pam & Eric becoming NewBlood™ tycoons and keeping Sarah as a donor-slave. But wondered if it was so easy to kill the Japanese bad guys, why did it take them so long?

And, of course, who was the bearded dude that ended up impregnating Sookie? Why keep that a mystery?

Another example of a show running on fumes for several seasons too long. Remember when this one was fun? Me neither.

Exactly what I said they should have done. They killed the yakuza. Big waste of time really. Feels like pandering the entire season just to end happily ever after.

I wonder how much of that was due to the lack of active involvement by Alan Ball, leaving Buckner and company too much of a mess to clean up after Season 5. The first two to three years the show had a tongue in cheek sense of humor, with the villians getting the best lines (Franklin, Russell Edgington, Maryanne Forrester). Once the weres and witches were a substantial part of the plot the show took itself far too seriously. I know Ball had a mancrush on Bill Compton, but given the way that Bill met his end, Vampire Bill could have stepped on a landmine in Season 3 and we could have still had a few more seasons of plot centered around Russell, Eric and Pam on the vamp side, and Sookie, Sam and Laffy on the other.

What was the story with Ball leaving?

He bailed for greener pastures? Can't imagine Banshee offering him a bigger check, unless he got most of his money from creating the show and getting profits on the DVD/Blu-Ray sales and creating/launching shows is where most of th money is made.

So many things wrong with this episode it is probably not worth typing them all. What a waste of a final episode.

What did you expect? The episode title ("Thank You") says it all. This one was for all the "'shippers" ... Or in other word,s it could have been titled, "Everything turns out OK in the end ... mostly."

I'm not saying that I agree with the rationale, but here's the official explanation from the show-runner:

http://www.eonline.com/news/573608/m...-series-finale

Quote:
Executive producer Brian Buckner explained that he felt it was "irrelevant" to know who Sookie ended up with.

"What we wanted to know was that she was happy and living the life that she wanted to lead, and to introduce some other stranger in the last five minutes of the finale wouldn't have made a lot of sense," he told Entertainment Weekly, noting that Sookie Stackhouse creator Charlaine Harris got flack for pairing Sookie with Sam in the books. "So we made a choice it's everyman, it doesn't matter. So we didn't have a version where we revealed him. I mean, we basically cast the man with the best arms from our stunt crew."

The mystery man at the end really has me stumped. They killed off Alcide, they moved Sam away, and then killed off Bill. Was there any reason she couldn't have ended up with Alcide? So weak.

It was just explained in the post above yours, no need to be stumped about it. She could end up with Alcide because he was dead.

I think the more salient point is that Alcide didn't have to die to further the storyline. His was a meaningless death, other than as a cheap plot device to drive Sookie back into Bill's arms. But that could have happened anyway, and she could then have ended back up in Alcide's arms! Instead of the stunt crewman with good arms. Alcide's arms were undoubtedly better anyway.

Basically, the plotline of 'True Blood' was always built on a foundation of Sookie's shifting carnal desires as she flitted from one meta-human to another. Having her flip-flop one more time would have been more in keeping with the show's previous seasons than what we got.
