I thought the vamps at the end was a bit too much as well.

The show does have some very rich characters, maybe even a bit too rich, Anna Paquin though is fantastic, her performance is outstanding, it's refreshing and unique, you never know exactly what she's thinking and how she's going to act and react. Very enjoyable to watch.

It is quite engaging for me so far. It has what appears to be a compelling cast, and the right pace. I'll be watching the season for sure.

You know they had me -- for about 20 minutes --- then they through in this crap with the anti-vamp minister getting killed in a freak accident and follow that up with some walmart vamps hamming it up at the end. Last week I didn't like the show, gave it a chance again, and am disapointed, I'll watch next week, but 3 times and it's out if it doesn't grab me.

Anna Paquin in a Hooters-like uniform is what makes this show. I'm frankly more interested in her character's powers and capabilities than in the vampire stuff. She has telepathy, hints of super strength or telekinesis, and now super-senses. What is the source of her powers?

I don't know what more this show can do with vampires that hasn't been done before. The vampires living among us thing was done in Moonlight.

Vampire Bill already stated the increased senses can be caused by drinking the vampire blood. I don't think they have even hinted yet about the source of her telepathy.

And what evidence has there been of any telekinesis? Did I miss that?

He might be thinking of InvisiBill knocking people around this episode. I thought there was something weird about Sookie's chain throwing abilities last week though.

Did anyone see the leaked premier episode?

In that version of the premier when Sookie threw the chain and it wrapped around Rattray's neck there was a quick cut to a mysterious women standing in the shadows at the forest edge and it appeared she was controlling the tightening of the chain around Rattray's neck. Additionally, it seemed she was somehow connected to the dog.

me too. wonder if it really was anything or maybe just a lucky throw?

i'm liking the show and it's vibe but maybe i'm alone in thinking that it needs more vamps and more chasing/hunting. i want the vamps to scare me!

on a related note, i saw the fearnet.com "mini-movies" for 30 Days of Night this weekend. those suckers did give me a few scares.

Ok, did a little research and found out that this series is going to get better and better each week. Also found out about the dog, very cool, should be revealed soon!

The dog was not the woman standing in the shadows. For whatever reason they cut that scene but she will be revealed in later episodes. As for the dog.... well all I'm going to say is it will be very cool when the secret of the dog is revealed!

I'm hooked for the season, especially after finding out some of what's in store for future episodes.

Ah damn. Does this mean that the dog is actually Sookie's mother and that her telepathy powers come from the fact that she's the daughter of a vampire and a human?

Which would explain why they had a lingering close up of the picture of a dog watching over a sleeping child.

Tuned in for ~20 minutes of first episode.
Clearly a show geared towards women.
Might be a big hit with women though, considering many like vampire novels and the lead role is a woman.

I don't know about that id say its more aimed at the 18-30 crowd with all the female nudity.
as far as the show I think its a bit early to see were their going. so I hope the ratings allow them to get to that point before/if it gets canned.

Here's my take on the dog:

I believe that the bar owner is a shape-shifter, and appears as the dog when Sookie is in trouble. Think back on all scenes with the dog and the connection is there. One key scene in the 2nd episode is when he asks Sookie to read his mind. He wants to share his ability with her.

Yeah, I thought it was pitched far more for young adults than for women. Although I am neither young nor a woman, I liked this episode even better than the first one. If the quality holds up, I believe this series is going to be really, really good, especially if Ball does as much in it as he did in Six Feet Under. The final episode of Six Feet Under, which Ball both wrote and directed, is perhaps the finest series finale ever put on film.

Warning: Do not read these spoilers if you do not want to know some plot details.

I know they are in Spoiler tags but some people read them anyway and then are disappointed that the plot's been Spoiled!

Pity then the ending I thought was just silly. On his own Bill is quite an interesting and low key character with a nice rapport with Sookie (even if it's very similar to the Buffy/Angel relationship), but when they bring the other vamps in and they are snarling at the camera and hamming it up with bared fangs I think it just looks ridiculous.

I think I'd like this show better if there were less vampires.

I agree. Other then Bill I want to see more of the Vampire who is leading Vampire Rights Admendment. Considering in the 15 special she has been involed in American politics since the founding of the U.S.?

So far I'm liking this show, so I'll keep giving it a chance.

For those who think it's a vampire show, you are completely missing the mark. If you take a step back and look at the bigger picture, it's an obvious case study on race relations in America, disguised as a vampire show. The creators are actually quite clever in using something that doesn't even exist as a vehicle to explore something as volatile and controversial as race. And they throw enough comparisons to actual race in the show, to punctuate the point.

Well said Rutgar.

Given its set in the deep south (La.) and all the topics they attempt to touch on, I can see that now.

Bill is from the 1800's and still has manners and values from that era. It just shows that vampires, as well as humans, have their own fringe part of society. Bill wants as normal a life (unlife? ) as possible, and to fit in. His visitors obviously enjoy revelling in their power, etc.

I dig the vampire genre, and I dig this show a lot so far!

It just seemed to "SciFi channel Saturday night movie'ish" to me, but we'll see how it goes, I'm definitely enjoying this show, the scenes with Sookie and Bill being the best parts IMO.

I completely disagree.

Yes, the TV show has touched on the "vamps rights" bit, which I guess is also touched on in the novels, but that's certainly not the main focus of the books...
