The tongue is going in different directions. OBVIOUSLY totally seperate developments! :P

BTW, what is True Blood about? Or a better question, are the vamps Anne Rice emo-goth, or Near Dark savage? The wife is excited about this, but I fear it will have a bunch of pallid model-boys with plumb lips. At least it should have boobies.

If Alan Ball is involved, and he is, you can bet on some boobies and probably a lot more.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't heard of this series or Alan Ball's return to HBO. Six Feet Under was fantastic, hopefully this will hit the mark as well.

I am confident it will be. It marks the day I resubscribe to HBO.

Finally. I remember hearing about this a while back. I have very high hopes for this show.

I am looking forward to this series, too. Alan Ball has been a favorite of mine ever since Six Feet Under and he won an Oscar for his screenplay for American Beauty.

No and no.

True Blood is based on the "Southern Vampire" series of books by Charlaine Harris...
The main character is a woman named Sookie Stackhouse who is a waitress in a bar/restaurant in Bon Temps, Louisiana. Sookie is a telepath, though most of her friends don't know it and though it can have its advantages, in general it makes life very difficult for her...

Due to a (Japanese?) synthetic blood called TrueBlood recently introduced on the market, vampires have decided to "come out of the closet" and tell humanity that they do, in fact, exist. In generaly, vamps are just like you and me except for the whole undead thing, and drinking blood and a bunch of other standard vamp weaknesses and strengths. To Sookie, though, the biggest revelation about vampires is that she can't read their minds...

Hang on. So because they can now get sustenance synthetically instead of biting (and killing?) people, they expose themselves?

Is there resistance? Do they have groupies? Hmmm, this series is looking more like a DVD rental. Especially with all the other shows starting next month.

Vampires are all the rage these days. 'Moonlight' had a devoted cult following. Anne Rice's books still sell, and authors like Charlaine Harris keep "reinventing" the formula. There's a new big screen vamp movie coming out this fall. For HBO, it must have looked like a can't-lose proposition. Vampire's give you the holy trinity of box office/ratings appeal: sex, violence, and tons of dramatic possibilities. What's not to love?

Yeah, vampire's are huge in my house right now, my wife just finished the "Twilight" series, and just started the first of the "True Blood" books. So she is looking forward to both this series and the Twilight movie. She is also watching "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" for the first time ever. She totally ignored it when it was on, but now we're watching two to three episodes a night.

The whimpering as some evil, undead blood sucker drains you like the last beer at a bachelor party?

Anna Paquin may give the series some redeeming value.

Yes and yes. There's some group called....hmm..."The Church of Light"? that wants to eradicate all vamps. And yes, there are a lot of vamp wanna-bes, some of whom want to be turned and others who volunteer to be fed upon.

Give the show a shot. The books are really good...

The promotional material for this available on HBO-on-demand didn't get me too excited for this. They were basically fake-news vignettes about events in the world of "true blood" and so forth. Very amateurish with some atrociously bad acting. I have to think the show will be better than that, but it wasn't promising.

I saw some of those and I think they might have been trying for an amateurish feel, more like "real life", as befits the promotional campaign. Given Alan Ball's pedigree and HBO's budgets, I expect this show to be very well done.

From the leaked Internet download I already can tell it is well done and Anna Paquin fits the lead part perfectly.

The gratuitous (cable) sex and violence doesn't hurt either.

Let's hope HBO remembers that gratuitous nudity, going all the way back to 'First & Ten' and 'Dream On', is in their DNA. There ought to be a lot of it on this show.

There is some decent nudity in the first episode So at least for episode one you will not be disappointed.

I watch the entire episode. My opinion doesn't change. The black chick had a southern accent that would make a Cajun cringe, but her gay brother didn't???

I'll give it one more episode but this one had me bored. Nothing going on here that I haven't seen before in the million or so TV shows and movies about vampires. I'm really tired of vampires being handsome, brooding mysterious figures with super strength that are trying to blend in. The only thing that was missing was some discussion about "houses" and "bloodlines."

It's about time vampires became scary again and turned into emaciated, feral demons that look like they've lived a hundred years as blood drinking corpses who just want to rip your blood out and don't develop super abilities as soon as they are turned.

I didn't even find the sex scenes that interesting either. The video of the vampire and the woman chained to the ceiling I thought was funny. The guy looked ridiculous mugging for the camera.

I'd have probably been more interested if it was just about a telepathic waitress. You don't see that as often.

One of the things I most look forward to with every new HBO series is the title design. They always have good music and visuals for those and this one was just as good.

I loved American Beauty. I was an avid Six Feet Under viewer. But if HBO thinks this show is going to be the white knight they so desperately need to regain their credibility and market share, I hope thery brought enough parachutes on board to survive this flight of fancy. Oh, and those video montages in which a number of nobodies spoke strongly on a subject they didn't seem to know much more than we do, except for regurgitating the same old myths we have all become aware of from a myriad of vampire movies.

This latest venture only seems to confirm that as the field of cable netwurks continue to expand, HBO will get nosed out further and further from its once lofty position in the media.

I too was incredibly bored by this program, and am very unlikely to watch another ep. At this rate, I expect HBO to offer edgier programming in the future, including their new spring series which desperately glamorizes the lives of performers in snuff films.
