Just like when ESPN first came out a lot of people called it "S Pin"
If it has good programming it won't matter what it's called and more than likely it will be pronounced correctly.

If the new name comes with a new philosophy about the bug, I'm all for it.

The SyFy bug during "Warehouse 13" tonight was one of the least obtrusive bugs I've seen in a long time. Whether or not it sticks, we'll have to see - it could just be for the premiere of a new original series - but there was no "Ghost Hunters" bug or anything else stuck up there during the program. Just a small, very transparent SyFy HD and a relatively small "Now: Warehouse 13" in normal non-animated text that came up on the lower left for the first few seconds after a commercial break. No pop ups, etc...

The X Files is on, with ad text over the bug. The ad free bug must have only been for the new show. I still don't like the name, but the smaller bug is nice. Of course that could have been done with the old design too. There was no real reason why it had to be so HUGE.

Does SyFy air only on cable and satellite or do any of the independent OTA netowkrs (such as ION) air some of all of their shows?

I checked Wikipedia but it said it was a cable network, but then listed satellite carriers which made me wonder if any terrestrial broadcast networks carry them as well.

Check out my Cozy Room within a Room Theater Build... in progress and closing in on completion.

Who are all the people supposed to be in the 2-minute promo for the new name that they've been airing before every new show? I recognize the ghost hunters and some of the Sanctuary cast, but I keep thinking I see people from Torchwood, and that channel never aired Torchwood, did it?

I noticed that it wasn't in HD also, I would have sworn they had shown it in HD in the past, that might have been USA-HD, but I would think they both had access to the same stuff, of course I might be thinking of another one of the Mummy movies too.

King of the Lost World, a grade-D movie starring Bruce Boxleitner and including Steve Railsback, was shown on the Siffy channel at 9am CT today (Sat 11 Jul 2009) -- one time only. It was flagged as HD and LB but was shown in letterbox; no HD.

OTOH, how many occasions have there been where a movie was really in HD but didn't get an audience because the HD flag was missing?

BTW, I shall always refer to this channel as Siffy. (The name sorta reminds me of Syzygy.)

They are probably the worst at HD listings of all the channels, at least the ones I frequently watch. The movie right now isn't listed as HD, yet it is, and like you said above, they list it as HD and it isn't. The guide listings are totally undependable, especially on their movies.

Low-fi sci fi: Cheesy SyFy flicks rule Saturday night
By Maxine Shen, New York Post - September 17th, 2010

Syfy, the cable channel that has made a cottage industry out of producing Saturday night B-movies, has a shark by the tail.

Anticipation has reached a fever pitch for a movie premiering tomorrow night, improbably called "Sharktopus," about a military-developed weapon -- a hybrid shark/octopus -- running amok in the waters off the coast of a Mexican resort.

It's the latest in a string of low-budget sci-fi films that has struck ratings gold for the network all year long.

The popularity of these movies -- which average about 2 million viewers for the first airings -- is simple to explain, says Thomas Vitale, Syfy's executive vice president of programming and original movies. "Escapist fun," he says.

In the midst of "a tough economy, a war and a lot of upheaval and change in the world," the movies give viewers a chance to "kick back, relax, order pizza and pop open a beverage. They're full of adventure, action, some comic relief and great visuals."

Unlike many other B-movies or straight-to-DVD movies, Syfy movies benefit because "there are people giving the movies oversight," Vitale says.

"We watch the movies to make sure they have logical consistencies . . . The movies have an internal logic that we never stray from. The audience appreciates that the movies hang together, so you're given an entertaining experience from beginning, middle to end."

Syfy churns out 24 of these movies a year. The network relies heavily on fast-moving indie production companies capable of shooting movies in just one month.

"We work pretty quickly, and that makes the [movies] have an indie, fun, energetic feel," Vitale says.

"We didn't want [the movies] to look like theatricals. We wanted them to look unique, like the sci-fi and creature movies that our audience grew up with in the '70s and '80s that used to be made for theatrical release . . . the kind of movies that are rarely made these days."

At a cost of about $2 million per two-hour movie -- as opposed to the estimated $2-3 million per episode for an hourlong sci-fi drama like "Lost" -- it's also a cheap way to grab viewers.

Last month, "Lake Placid 3" pulled in 3 million viewers, while June's "Stonehenge Apocalypse" got 2.14 million viewers -- solid numbers for the cable network, indicating that these kinds of movies have legs at the network.

"As long as you have stable and growing ratings, which means you're attracting more people every year, it makes it all worthwhile," Vitale says.

I have fun watching some of these but some are out and out dogs. If it doesn't grab me in the first 5 minutes off it goes. The key is to not take themselves seriously when making the film. Film arcs should be something a first year film student should understand so I don't know why some films and even big network series fail at it.

Syfy Announces 2011 Schedule
By Natalie Abrams, TVGuide.com - March 22nd, 2011

Syfy network has unveiled its jam-packed 2011 lineup, which includes the premiere of the scripted ensemble drama Alphas.

The show, premiering in July, follows a team of ordinary citizens with extraordinary abilities. Warehouse 13, Eureka and Haven are also slated to return in the summer.

"Our ambition in development is to push the boundaries of imagination, creativity, and story-telling," Syfy President Original Content Mark Stern said on Tuesday."We want to transport our audience with high-quality, thought-provoking experiences that allow them to explore the un-explorable, to believe the unbelievable, and to truly... 'Imagine Greater.'"

On the reality side, series greenlights include Haunted Collector, a paranormal investigation series focusing on haunted objects (premiere in June), rather than places; Legend Quest, which follows a real-life symbologist tracking down ancient mysteries (premieres in July); and Paranormal Witness, which tells the true stories of those who have lived through paranormal experiences (premieres in September). A new season of Hollywood Treasure will return in June.

Elsewhere, the network is developing more than a dozen other series projects.

On the scripted side those include another Battlestar prequel, Blood and Chrome, set in the 10th year of the First Cylon War, as well as three half-hour comedies. They are Me and Lee, starring stars Lee Majors as a man who turns a 20-something, whose back surgery didn't go well, into a bionic man. In the Dark centers on a team of wannabe paranormal investigators. Three Inches tells the story of a man who is struck by lightning and is imbued with the power to move things with his mind but only a distance of three inches.

Reality projects include: Culture Shock with Tommy Lee, where the rocker will attempt to uncover various rituals, symbols and mysteries of the secret societies around the world; Dinner with Deepak, which will feature Chopra bringing together noteworthy guests to share a meal; Monster Man, a behind-the-scenes look at Cleve Hall's workshop as he creates some of Hollywood's bizarre film creatures; Stunts Unlimited, about the dangerous world of stunt men; and Hi Tech Hoaxes, a Punk'd-esque prank show.

There's also Tyler Shields, from Heroes star Zachary Quinto, a docu-series featuring the Los Angeles-based unconventional artist; Overthunk, a one-hour series that follows teams of creators who compete to design massive chain reactions; Change the Day You Die will use state-of-the-art technology to transport its participants into "the future" to see the face of their own demise and set them on a course to prevent it; Imagination Nation will showcase the inventors behind Hammacher Schlemmer, who go on the road to meet other inventors; and America's Smartest Kids, a competition show where the country's brightest children are challenged with inventing a better future.

Heading into the holidays, Syfy will hold its Countdown to Christmas Week for a second year, highlighted by the TV movie Neverland, starring Keira Knightley as Tinker Bell. The network will also air holiday-themed episodes of Eureka, Ghost Hunters, Haven and Warehouse 13.

I'm still trying to figure out what a cooking show is doing on SyFy...

At least Warehouse 13 and Eureka are still on.

XBOX Live: Wagmman
PSN: Wagg
BFBC2: Wagman
Steam: Wag

My Second Life character looks and acts exactly like me except he can fly.

If we don't like the programming we can blame it on the people who have nielsen boxes. With 250 channels, the internet, the recession, advertisers have to expect lower ratings with people that have nielsen boxes. I've continued to like SGU this year. Then again, i'm a little different then most on this thread i don't like BSG.
