I may be out of date on this, but isn't the new splicer limited to simple text scrolls? Most larger stations are showing radar loops or maps of warning areas on their weather alerts, so just doing text would be a big step back.

The weather crawl feature hasn't been turned on yet. FOX is just now getting the info from stations to turn that function on.

All opinions expressed (unless otherwise noted) are the posters and NOT the posters employers. The poster in NO WAY is/will speak for his employers.

I'll dust off this old topic to ask a relevant question - is the weather crawl feature now active in the new splicer? Just saw an HD crawl during network programming for the first time on KDFW. KDFW is an O&O so I'm guessing they probably aren't violating the Fox standards and doing something post-splicer.

AFAIK, it isn't again Fox rules to put something in downstream. You just can't disconnect the output between the IRD and the splicer and connect it to a splitter to get at the HD.

That said, I hadn't looked the the engineering we page in ages. Here is what it has to say:

Quote:

FOX SPLICER MANUAL V3 ADDENDUM
This addendum covers additional features in the upcoming "V3" release of code. To enable these features, please contact FOX Splicer Support to arrange for an upgrade.

Included is information on Local Logo Loading, Emergency Text Crawl Alerts, Audio Breakaway, and Enhanced Video Monitoring. The addendum is located HERE or at the Splicer Manual link above.

ALERT GRAPHICS ARE HERE!

FOX continues testing the FOX Splicer Alerting API with the support of EAS ENDEC and Weather Alerting manufacturers. Digital Alert Systems has successfully tested their DASDEC with the FOX Splicer System including text crawls and EAS audio breakaway. Trilithic has successfully initiated a test text crawl on the FOX Splicer System during remote testing. Sage Alerting Systems has announced that an upgrade is now available for the Sage Digital ENDEC Model 3644 to use with the FOX Splicer network API for alert crawls.

So, sounds like it is definitely here.

That's good news...no longer the downgrades to standard definition when we have t-storm warnings. Considering what the weather can be like around, that's a significant upgrade.

While that is the good news, the bad news is that stations will also get the ability to load animated bugs (250 frames max). We don't need that sh!t. Hopefully stations won't do that and if they do, I hope their viewers bitch like Hell.

I saw an identical-looking crawl on WJBK some time ago.

During House on Mon. night the Detroit Fox station drooped out of full screen to shadowboxed for quite some time running the weather crawl - very irritating.

As did Fox DC on last week's Glee.

It isn't going to happen everywhere overnight. The stations have to schedule an upgrade to the new firmware and they have to order, and then receive, the approved gear that interfaces to the splicer system.
