I watched this on Friday, but didn't see a thread all weekend. Kinda figured that it was so bad that people were not even going to discuss it.

I wish it was better. The show must actually be embarrassing to people that are doing real, legit, conservation work.

Finally watched the first episode. LOL, I don't think the SS crew really know what they're getting into, especially with the locals. This could get ugly. (Or funny)

What "input" does Sea Shepherd have in the final release of the TV episodes ? Animal Planet is certainly a "pro" animal group, but not fanatically so like SS ! I suspect they'll still keep what we see to fit their ideals.

Just to be precise, they found a boat towing a pen of Tuna after the fishing season was already closed for a couple of days ...
& they ASSumed, based on their ideas of where the boat was, & was headed, That the Tuna in the pen were caught after the close of the season .....

I didn't really like this 2nd episode. They are editing it way too much to create drama, as usual it doesn't go the way they try and make it look to be. The ship might get impounded and the campaign might be over. Really? then what would you have filmed for the rest of the season? Paul might get arrested, they take the passports and nothing happens. Lets show a bunch of bones, what would you expect to see, they have been killing these whales for ever. It does seem its more about raising money, then actually saving whales.

You know, I don't like killing of whales, but they aren't going to be able to change their culture. It's tradition and those Danish people do eat the meat from the slaughter.

At least the real anti whaling campaign starts in a few weeks against Japan. It looks like it will be a good season too.

Them driving the van around with pictures of slaughtered whales was just beyond stupid. The people that live there already know what it looks like SINCE THEY DO IT. Once again, just like with the Japanese whalers, the SS's wont stop whales from dying.

I noticed that the townspeople did a very good job of just ignoring them, at least for a while...

Also, just out of curiosity, I looked up some numbers related to the hunting done with these whales. There's estimated to be anywhere from 1/2 million to a million of this whale species. For the past 15 or so years, the Faroese people take just under 1000. That number won't make a dent in the population of those whales ! In fact, SS should be HAPPY with them as they've GREATLY reduced the number that they kill each year. Just 20-30 years ago, they were taking 10-20,000 !

Thought I would bump this thread (in case anyone here besides me are still watching this show). Several weeks in, and the Steve Irwin hasn't even made it down to the Antarctic whaling grounds. Interesting new paint scheme on the ship. They keep talking about all of the money Japan sunk into security, but since there hasn't been any real interactions with the whaling fleet itself, we haven't really seen what those security improvements might be. I'm hoping this season gets going soon, because so far, it's been a big snooze fest.

Yeah, they are definitely the gang who couldn't shoot straight.

Amazing that Watson can find so many suckers... Er volunteers, to sacrifice themselves for the cause. Guess we will find out what becomes of the three Aussies next week.

This show has taught me 2 things:
1. I have never seen more "best case scenario" thoughts from anyone, ever. You would think they would learn. "Look there, on the radar, that's big" Cut to a crew member "If this really is the Nissan, we could stop whaling for the season and send them home". Back to the radar. "Oh, it's an iceberg". Sadness on everyone's face. Or when they drop a line in the water to catch on the propeller, high 5's abound, "it's caught". A minute later, they are picking up speed.
2. I have never seen more incompetent people and/or equipment.

The Ady Gail had no business being in those waters, what was Paul thinking? LOL

Looks like they got their old shipmate back, the dude that was kicked off last season (or the season before, for steering them into an ice field overnight). I love how he says the Nishin Maru is the most violent ship he's ever seen, how it split the "Godzilla" (can't remember the name) in half last season. It didn't cut it in half, it took the nose off of it. And it only did that because the idiot crew was too busy celebrating, instead of staying clear of the Nishin.

If you count the 3-4 episodes of the Faroe Islands campaign the gang has been shooting blanks for a very long time. Makes their frequent, "We're going to rip them a new one" comments the only action we've seen in ages. When Paul asked for volunteers I was hoping someone would shout back, "Why don't you go tubby!"

The Nishin never hit a ship. The ship that took out the Ady Gil is the same ship tailing the Steve Irwin this season, the Shonan Maru #2.

Well, the Sea Shepards do plenty of silly things... But judging from the Whale Wars footage, The crew of the Ady Gil was well away from Shonan, stationary, while waiting to be refueled. The Shonan made a bee line right at them, and ran over the Ady Gil (looking rather deliberate). But, I'll concede, the video could have edited to show the situation, in this light.

The Japanese whaling "group" has video of the incident as well. I try to be objective and keep an open-mind (neutral) but it looked to me like the Ady Gil (really the captain, Pete Bethune) tried to play chicken .... and LOST.

What about the "hole-plugger" thing that was supposed to plug up some cooling-water outlets on one of the ships and "stop it dead in the water" ? They placed one in each of the outlets and it didn't do a damn thing.

Back to your original comment though, I often wonder if the producers and/or Animal Planet intentionally make SS look foolish. You definitely can't accuse either of being biased in favor of SS !

The Japanese are willing to kill the SSer's just to get rid of them. That was pretty obvious when Watson got shot, and just happened to be wearing a bullet proof vest ONCE.

The Japanese are well within their rights to sink the SS vessels that harass them, or shoot the SSers that attempt to harm, disable, or board their vessels.

I am starting to wonder if this season we are going to see anything with the Nishin. They are 2 months into the season as of tonight's episode and we haven't seen any previews that show them doing anything with the Nishin. I have a feeling we are going to see a colossal failure this season.

Sticks, Grappling Hooks, and Flash Bangs... Oh My!

I guess now we see that the Japanese don't plan on putting up with any fecal matter. And it appears they have outsmarted the SS'ers at every turn.

Of course we will. Just like every other year. The Japanese harvest exactly as many whales as they wish every year and the SSers haven't been able to do anything about it.

Friday's episode was repeated incidents of what you describe !! One thing after another that just didn't work out the way they hoped and thought it would ! As just noted above, the Japanese are clearly "winning" this year. Remember, the other harpoon vessels and the factory ship are elsewhere doing what they do.

Can't wait for next week. Seeing a SSer getting popped in the head with a broom handle will give a tiny bit of satisfaction.

I like the Japanese prop fouler method much better - just drop a grapnel hook down on the small boat. Even a miss can yield positive results.
