I noticed that with the fuel gauge as well. They tried to emphasize that he helicopter flew to the limit of it's range to search, yet it took 3/4 of a tank to get there ? I also seem to recall the narrator saying it was a 70-mile one-way trip (yes, he said "miles" as he's generally speaking to US-based audiences).

That helicopter is apparently a McDonnell-Douglas 500 and there's a variety of models, but the min range I see is over 250 miles with some versions capable of 375 miles.

Its pretty simple on this show. When they start with all the BS about how they MIGHT die, run out of gas, etc etc. You know the exact opposite is going to happen. Just like when the BB broke cracked the pontoon, I knew it wouldn't sink.

Hardly a sleight of hand as anyone who could see the fuel gauge could easily recognize the incongruity between character statements and reality.

In other news, reality TV shows use hyperbole to create drama where there is none. Discuss. smile.gif

After watching the previous episode the other night, I really don't see how this show can last much longer. What they need to do is just condense everything and have either a 1 or 2 hour show similar to the Operation Bluefin Tuna or Seal Wars shows. Everything just drags out in Whale Wars. It took what, 2-3 episodes to find out if the Brigitte Bardot was going to sink or not. The rest of the episodes have been really about nothing. Minor things are made into life threatening dramatic incidents when in reality, they aren't. I guess that's reality tv for you, but this is worse.

Seriously, how in the hell do you manage to prop-foul your own boat? Idiots.

Also loved the irony of one of the SS'ers using Fujinon binoculars.

Currently testing 3D with Sammy DLP, shutter glasses, and HTPC

So according to Paul they are going to buy another ship like the BB. Good idea, since it worked so well. Lets have 2 ships that shouldn't be out in those kind of seas trying to do what they want to do. They were out witted at every possible time during the season, buying another ship not meant to be out there sure proves their stupidity.

I think I'm convinced now that Animal Planet sets them up to fail, at least in regards to their grandiose plans that continue to fall through. The big deal about the last attempt at prop-fouling -- the Japanese clearly have figured out how to deal with this. Or "we found the factory ship !!", call the other ship, have a crew meeting, jump up and down in excitement and then .... boom ! Not one harpoon vessel to defend the factory ship, but two ! And the Japanese's tactic for boxing in the Bob Barker with tow lines on both ships was excellent. Even the graphic AP showed with them effectively steering the Bob Barker while the factory ship went the other way, you knew they were done.

They were sunk from the start with their plan to intercept the factory ship up in Indonesian waters. Of course having Mr. Magoo pilot the helicopter was deviously clever. The Japanese have definitely stepped up their game by overcoming prop fouling lines and their brilliant use of twin whaling ships trolling prop fouling lines. The latter would probably dislodge the Bob Barker or Steve Irwin's from their preferred aft blockage of the factory ship.

There is nothing bad about having two fast little boats next season but the SS'ers are doomed to failure as long as the whaling ships have a 5 knot speed advantage.

I think the SSers are now 2 for about 40 in prop foulings. The only two successes came against their own boats.

This entire season could've been 4 episodes long. 1 for their successes, 3 for their failures.

Kudos to AniZal Planet for dragging out 6 or 7 good scenes as long as they did.

Watson claims he has never rammed any ships, yet has stamps on the Steve Irwin boasting about ships he has sunk.

The Sea Shepard's defense is hilarious: "But, but, they shot us with water cannons and threw concussion grenades!"

To them, if they ran at me swinging their fists and I hit them first, I'm the guilty party.

I caught the tail end of the show last night, it doesn't appear to be a new season according to my menu. They only show this one episode. They also showed the totals for the whaling season, its like this is a one and done.

It was a 2 hr show, afaict (and I don't recall seeing any of that material before). Doesn't surprise me if the season was just that 1 self-contained episode.

I can see one chicken captain getting the boot. It's not on next Friday and there's no new season info on the Animal Planet website. It was probably a one-off. Since the two hours covered the beginning and end of the whale catching season there might not be any new shows until next Fall, if at all.
