I'm surprised this one doesn't have a thread. It's one of the best food shows on TV.
The visual quality isn't as superb as it should be because I have Dish. However, food--especially things with various or unusual textures (by US standards) stand out quite a bit with the extra resolution of high definition.
Weirdest episodes? For me, it would be a toss-up between Uganda and Canton, China. Honorable mentions to Japan, the Gulf Coast of the US, Alaska and Ethiopia.
I agree with the OP that this is a great show. (I even admit that I DVR all the new episodes.) For me, the main appeal isn't the exotic-ness of the food, but rather the funny things that Zimmern says about the food (and how bad some of it tastes).
The recent Japan episode was one of the absolute funniest I've seen.
Zimmern seems game for just about anything. One of the few things I've seen him say was absolutely horrible was 'stinky tofu' in Taiwan, the other was in Morocco- the breakfast dish everybody ate daily, can't remember the name. I just love the way he describes things, he is extremely expressive and you get a real sense of what something tastes like just by looking and listening to him. A real gem of a show, thanks for starting the thread.
Yep, this is a great show. I don't yet get Travel Channel HD, but the show itself, and Zimmern, are fanastic. He enables me to vicariously sample foods that I would NEVER, EVER sample myself.
As the previous poster mentions, only two foods (well, I guess three counting the durian (sp?) fruit) have beaten Zimmern, and one was the "stinky tofu and thousand year old eggs". As soon as he put the food in his mouth you could see he wasn't going to make it. And for anyone who hasn't seen the show yet, Zimmern will eat *anything* once. He is a very personable, engaging host as well. Great stuff.
Raw goat balls w/ scrotum still attached? Good lord, that takes some ahem, balls, to eat.
That episode was insane. Besides the aforementioned raw goat balls, we had tuna eyeballs, the mayonnaise restaurant, octopus eggs, a turtle blood drink, pig's windpipe, fermented raw fish, and the smelling of the anus of a sea snake.
"Please remove this needless , stupid show from my programing. I find it offensive and disgusting...I am a vegan and oppose eating animal flesh, dog and cat, and endangered species especially..this is mrally and ethically wrong"
"Andrew Zimmern is a sick individual.Apparently, all his years as an alcoholic damaged his brain. What an absolute jerk. One can only hope this moron leaves this planet ASAP."
"This is a disgusting show. It should be removed because it shows no compassion for animals and it is PROMOTING ANIMAL CRUELTY."
I think The Travel Channel does not show enough of Andrew. I went in my Dishnetwork guide and looked at The Travel Channel programming for 5 days a head (Yesterday - Saturday the 15th) and there wasn't the episode of Uganda airing within 5 days. I want to see that Uganda episode!
(For the drum music!)
