They do this at the end of each season, and honestly it's getting really old. The Captain may retire, but he says this all the time (really? since when?) Alexis may move away. You think maybe Castle and Beckett might finally, because that would be a great wrap-up to a season, but no.

I did like the episode overall, though. Barron was clearly a Trump-lite character, and the host (can't remember his name) was Bob Saget. References to being typecast because of his role as wholesome dad for years, but always wanting to be seen as edgy. It was all funny because it made no attempt to disguise what it was lampooning, in fact, figuring it out was half the fun.

Well, they did not split up Castle and Beckett this year.... that's about all they didn't do.

Thanks Ron.

In that last scene, it sure looked like Beckett sung her swan song.

Did anybody else suspect that Montgomery was involved?

That was a good season ender. Not really a cliff hanger though-I mean who really believes Beckett will die? I wonder who the new captain will be?

Yeah....camera cut back to him a little too much.

...and the whole 3rd cop thing came up in "only" the last episode. Before that, there wouldn't have been any reason to think there was one.

So....once Beckett recovers from death, I guess she'll be obsessing about her shooter.

Yea. Early in the ep when they kept harping on about the 3rd cop thing, I figured it had to be a major cast member and only one could have been around at the time.

Gotta say I didn't expect his outcome. Was kind of hoping for a total personality reversal like Alpha in Dollhouse.

The only thing that pissed me off about this episode was that Kate and Montgomery WEREN'T wearing flak armor underneath. She wears it all the time, but she gets shot the one time she doesn't? Gimme a break. Oh wait. ABC did.

Now in NE Tucson, AZ with a cheap rabbit ears antenna. Got everything except KTTU (MyNetwork).

As soon as they mentioned a 3rd cop, I figured it was Montgomery, but I had been thinking he was dirty in some way for several weeks now. It will be interesting to see who the new captain is.

At least Kate had the excuse that she wasn't planning on going to a gunfight. Although, I'd think everyone would be under orders to wear body armor to the funeral of a cop that was killed by professionals.

But what's the bad guy's excuses for not wearing body armor when they know they're going to a gunfight?

And why is it that Castle can just carry off Beckett, the bad-ass kick boxer whom we've seen kick trained men around?

Anyway, it looks to me like they shot these last two episodes before they got renewed and now they've dug themselves a hole which will require some really lame excuses to get out of.

Yeah, I thought I saw a "look" on his face which I immediately interpreted as he was the 3rd cop.

I'll call it here. She was wearing body armor and this was a setup to put them at ease because they think she's dead.

Edit - these are supposedly professionals, that means shoot the head, not the body.

Blood wouldn't be an issue, in fact I would expect their faking it to include fake blood to make it look as real as possible.

That's what I thought. A professional with a high power rifle, a state of the art scope and a relatively stationary target wouild almost certainly go for a head shot. OTOH, it is television and it does give the writers the task of "some splaining to do" when the series resumes. I really liked the scenes between Kate's dad (Scott Paulin of "The Right Stuff" fame), Rick and his mother as well as Montgomery explaining to Beckett why he let Castle stay around. It's the classic "everyone knows but the two of you" scenario and was well played.

That was my first thought. They used that in one of the Lethal Weapon sequels (though it was a botched attack that they made seem successful to fool the bad guys).

I also noted that they built a story around Beckett's old trainer a couple of episodes back - the one she didn't want to believe was dirty. (He also got killed, but at the start of the episode.) That's now two cops she respected who "betrayed" her trust. That sets up a pretty good reason for her not to want to become involved with yet another man (Castle) who might let her down. I think that direction is more likely next season, rather than Castle and Beckett hooking up. Should be fun, though. This show is a pretty consistent performer for me, despite the occasional lapses.

I liked the season finale. It was surprisingly dark, considering how lighthearted Castle usually is. Nevertheless, I liked it a lot. Assuming Castle gets a 4th season, I have no idea what the writers plan to do with Becket lying gut shot on the ground as the episode ended. Finally, I was blindsided by the third cop turning out to be Montgomery and we still don't know who the criminal mastermind is or what his goals are. All of this could go any of several ways. Anyway, if Castle returns I'll be there.

....

Can you imagine all the lawsuits for "intentional infliction of emotional harm" that would happen if some police force pulled a stunt like that in real life?

And would Castle really subject his mother and daughter to the trauma of such a stunt?

castle saw the reflection off the scope, he yelled and dived and she moved enough to cause the bullet to hit somewhere else. also when he lifted his hand there was blood on it.

Went back and reviewed the final scene.

1. There was blood on Beckett's white glove. Not a whole lot but enough for you to know that there was blood.... Now this raises a question. If it was a torso shot, wouldn't Castle be trying to stop the bleeding?

2. Castle didn't appear all that emotional in the last scene. Beckett shed a tear but Castle didn't. If the writers wanted to keep us guessing, this was a good way to go about it.
