Does anyone, other than DISH, carry the RZ? Is it tied in with the NFL Network?

Is this channel active on any day but Sunday, or is it just dead-air?

Only Sunday during the 1pm and 4pm Eastern games otherwise it's off.

Small correction. It is on from 1pm - appx 7:30pm - when the last 4pm game concludes.

They added it in Denver and our system is usually one of the last to get channels.

I saw a Comcast commercial for the preview with the HD channel number. Although right now that channel has a static SD screen.

Gregg Easterbrook of ESPN.com's Tuesday Morning Quarterback (TMQ) has offered an interesting insight on the NFL Red Zone channel - it's about halfway down the column for today.

I just read his comments, and suffice it to say, he certainly isn't speaking for me. It seems to be geared to Fantasy Freaks, in my humble opinion.

I think he summed up the appeal of the RZC pretty well. I do think most people watching football are watching their team and I don't think that will change with the RZC. But if your team is not on, and you have no particular rooting interest, RZC is a great alternative. Just the fact that there are no commercials is captivating. I find myself gravitating to the RZC, even when a good game is on one of the broadcast networks. Rather than jumping between games, I let the NFL do it for me. The fact that they really focus on the close games late is a huge asset also.

I agree with others here commenting on this guy, but he doesn't know his stuff. He implies that there is only one Red Zone Channel, not pointing out that DirecTV RZC is a different product than NFLN RZC. (Also that on DirecTV, no Sunday Ticket means no RZC)

Also he claims that FOX/CBS/NBC missed out this kind of opportunity in the past, but honestly NFL broadcasts are all about local advertising revenue, and FOX/CBS/NBC have the affiliates interests in mind first, that's why they never developed anything close to this. Even if the 49er game is a blowout either way, here in the Bay Area FOX would never change away from the 49er game for fear that 49er fans would tune out [for example].

Finally the article claims that now advertisers will be angry. I can see them peeved but they can't really do anything about it. I've been suggesting the last few years that one day I could see the NFL using their own networks (it can create more) to broadcast their games. The NFL is such a juggernaut that it could pull it off, and it's the only pro league in the US that could do it. So basically FOX/CBS/NBC/ABC-ESPN, Cable, FIOS, and Satellite are completely at the mercy of the NFL. So the networks won't be complaining about RZC to the NFL for fear that the next time their deals are up, the NFL will take away NFL broadcasts from them.

The networks need the NFL, but the NFL doesn't need the networks. Hence it's creation of the NFL Network, NFLN RZC, and probably more channels coming in the future. I do agree with the author that NFLN RZC is a way to help bolster the legitimacy of the NFL Network.

You are correct about some of his factual errors. On some points he does seem confused. I was sort of getting at one of those points when discussing the interest in local teams.

I do wonder about the "commercial free" aspect of this. I think it is one of the most awesome qualities of this channel. If it is really successful, will they add Ads? I hope not, of course.

I don't think there's any reason to do so. Considering it's a premium sports channel, they can just raise the fees.

Survival Sunday + NFL RedZone + Snow = FUN, FUN, FUN.

Only had this channel for two years (TWC subscriber) but man, when there are Sundays like this where you're stuck with Jets-Raiders as the only OTA NFL game in your market (yuck!), you can't imagine NFL Sunday without RedZone to keep you company. smile.gif

85 touchdowns this past weekend during RedZone's air time, a record for them (88 in all for Sunday if you include the CAR/NO game).

During the every touchdown from every game montage Sunday, the showed a touchdown that wasn't. They showed Bryant scoring the Cowboys final touchdown, but that call was reversed because his knee was down before he broke the plane. Murry scored on the next play on a 1 yard run and they didn't show that.
