There have been many black and whites aired over the past few months by TCM which definitely appeared sharper with more contrast and richer blacks than before. I know because I re-dubbed some of them onto DVD-R and even though it's down-converted to 480i, the newer recording were much better than the older ones off of standard definition. Titles included "The Great Zigfield" and "Birth Of A Nation".

These might not be 1080i transfers but if they are good prints, transmitting them in 1080i is a big improvement over 480i. Even the color ones ("Golden Voyage of Sinbad" and "Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger" looked better. However, if the prints are bad, they looked better off masked by 480i resolution (for example, "Light In The Piazza" was worse than the original recording I made off of 480i).

I'm still hoping that Directv will include TCM in it's next batch of HD. After this year there will be a two year gap before the next satellite goes up so no channels will be added.

Fortunately, I was able to review the complete June schedule by going into daily calendar - not as convenient as the old monthly list (one also needs to click in order to get the information) but better than nothing at all.

However, still note that when one searches for a movie title, there is no indication about the next scheduled airing, like before - only how to purchase the DVD if available.

How are you getting the complete June schedule? I can go to daily and select May 31 and then hit weekly which only gets me to June 6. What am I doing wrong?

Did it with the daily schedule - meant a lot more clicking.

Thank you, I got it. Bookmarked June 1st so I don't have to do that again.

Of course we all wish TCMHD was true HD, but the current TCMHD is a vast improvement over TCM SD for WS films. You no longer have to zoom to fill the screen, and the picture is much sharper. At its best, it is as sharp as a good anamorphic DVD, and that's way better than any SD. Also, I can now make anamorphic DVDs from TCMHD.

As to films I'd like TCM to show, I vote for the little-known 1961 British film Johnny Nobody. Of course there are scads of others I'd like to see on TCM, but that one seems the least likely to pop up.

I don't get TCMHD but even if the content isn't HD it should sure look better than the same content on a 480i SD channel. Like kjbawc said the HD channel will be true 16:9 vs letterbox 16:9 on the SD channel. Sure it would be nice if TCMHD actually showed HD prints but I for one would be happier to at least get a HD carrier
For us recorders even though DVD is 480i that doesn't mean a recording done from a 480i SD channel will look the same as a recording done from a HD channel, HD is noticeably better

How do you make anamorphic DVDs from TCMHD? Do you use a RAM or computer software? I use a Panasonic DVD recorder. Since playback is up-converted via HDMI, the recorder is set to display all non-anamorphic DVDs stretched to to fit a 16:9 screen. If the source is widescreen, I use my set's vertical expand to fill the screen properly; if it's 4x3, the DVD recorder's zoom is then also utilized (better than the set's zoom mode).

I use a component to S-Video converter, and feed it to my DVDRs' HDDs, edit, and then burn to disc. The WS flag is not set, so they wouldn't play properly on a 4x3 set, but that doesn't bother me.

What kjbawc said and at the risk of getting to OT I also use Panasonic DVDRs(kjbawc uses Pioneers) and the key is you need a anamorphic source, something Comcast and most cable companies refuse to give us from their SD outputs (although most satellite STB/DVRs do allow). The trick is to get a component to S-video converter to convert the WS HD to WS SD for use in our DVDRs. They start at <$50 but for the higher quality units >$200 seems to be the starting point. For info on such devices check out this thread. For any follow up questions please use that thread
As kjbawc said most DVDRs don't set the WS bit so the anamorphic DVDs won't play properly on a 4:3 TV but my international Panasonic DVDR (EH-59) sets the bit and has a 250 GB HDD, I paid $250 for a like new floor model.

Thanks guys for explaining it.

I do use the S-video ouput from my cable box into the recorder.

BTW - regarding TCMHD picture quality, last night's airing of "Raintree County" was vastly superior to those of the past. Maybe not quite HD quality but again, a vast improvement and definately sharper and more colorful than anything one could get on standard defintion.

Truffaut's BRIDE WORE BLACK, EDGE OF THE CITY, SON OF FRANKENSTEIN, FREAKS, etc. etc. etc. in HD on those channels. And services such as VuDu have even more! So TCM has absolutely NO excuse.

I'm loving the new Hulu Plus additions ... many classics ... U.S. and foreign ... in 720p .... so I no longer pine for HD on TCM-HD.

If anybody is still reading this thread, one can now get the daily schedule through August 31 (three months later) on the TCM website (instead of the monthly schedule for two months later).

That is the great mystery. I resubscribed to E* just to get AMC, BBCA, and TCM in HD.

But, alas, it's not. Honestly, I'm starting to think that TCM feels that the PQ on the "HD" channel is good enough and that we may never see actual HD on the channel. Saves them a boat load of money.

Agree. But it's still the best channel on TV.

Also, to differentiate between Direct and OTA (or just digital TV in general), there's "DTV" (digital television), which people often erroneously use here as an abbreviation for Direct.

There's some backstory on using D* for DirecTv. I don't remember the complete story, but as I recall there was a guy named Dave who worked for D* the experience with which one poster had that was comical. So we started rerferring to DirecTv as "Dave" which was shortened to D*.
