There are a number of titles that still show up in the wrong ratio. Depends what they can get from the distributors and TCM may not have been able to update all of their titles yet.

After having watched Inherit The Wind on TCM I wondered what was going on. I was able to watch it on my Sony VW600es and it actually looked very good. It the first film I've ever seen on TCM that actually looked like HD. I decided to take a look at this thread, which I haven't looked at in months. It appears my eyes weren't playing tricks on me after all. ITW even had strong contrast to go along with the detail.

This is really great news.

Some historical perspective - when Turner started running the movies from long ago, the channel was called TNT. I was able to watch it with a 10' satellite dish on C Band. The tv was a 25" Sony CRT and the picture was crisp and sharp. Sad to say, these same B&W movies viewed today on a 50" Kuro look soft.

Nothing HD about last night's airing of Raintree County. Not that I was expecting anything great-no HD transfer exists of this one, AFAIK, and rumor has it that the elements are in dire need of restoration. But this looked quite awful-an 80s or early 90s transfer of weak elements. A lot of instability in the picture-so much, in fact, that I wonder if it had anything to do with Dish compression.

Watched the umpteenth showing of Ben Hur last night. It looked quite HD. Decent print that would benefit from a 4K presentation some day. I suspect that it has already been transferred/archived in 4K.

Considering the size of the screens when this debuted, short of a few IMAXs, I doubt if we see anything that looks as good at our present-day cinemas.

Some thoughts:

(1) The special effects (landscapes, crowds, etc.) were impressive, especially without CGI.

(2) The stereo soundtrack seemed reversed (L<>R) on TCM.

(3) I couldn't help but wonder if that shaking chariot race could benefit from FI, which is not available on my display.

I recorded it, too. Terrible PQ (looked like MPEG2). We gave up after 50 minutes. Just wasn't that appealing.

I just tuned into Close Encounters, and it looks like SD.

Anyone here experiencing audio/video sync problems, specifically audio trailing video? It's happening in the SF market and I was wondering if it was happening anywhere else to help determine whether it's the fault of Comcast or Turner?

Thanks
