The Answer Man
Premieres Wednesday, July 22nd at 8:00pm followed by encore presentations at 9:45pm and 11:30pm
Starring Jeff Daniels, Lauren Graham Lou Taylor Pucci. Directed by John Hindman

From first-time director John Hindman, comes THE ANSWER MAN, a romantic comedy starring Jeff Daniels (The Squid and the Whale), Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) and Lou Taylor Pucci (Thumbsucker). Arlen Faber (Daniels) is the reclusive author of "Me and God," a book that has redefined spirituality for an entire generation and has been translated into over 100 languages. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of his still wildly popular book, Arlen is still sought after as the man who has all the answers. Arlen's life collides with Elizabeth (Graham), a single mom raising her seven year-old son, and Kris (Taylor Pucci), a young man fresh out of rehab who is searching for meaning. Both Elizabeth and Kris are hopeful that Arlen has the answers, but the truth is, he hasn't got a clue. The film also stars Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist) and Olivia Thirlby (Juno).

I think I speak for him when I say it's not that easy, especially if you bundle in broadband internet. DSL isn't really a viable option speed-wise, and FIOS is still unavailable in most places and will be for the foreseeable future. And putzing with a dish is a pain (been there, done that), although I understand there's no longer a need for an OTA antenna (the biggest pain). It's these damn local monopolies they give to cable companies that make them think they can treat their customers like crap and continually get away with it because there's no viable competition.

It's frustrating because nobody knows why they did it. Cubes offered to cut his carriage fee and they still dropped them. It makes no sense. It would be nice if HDNet would tell us the whole story. This is an enthusiast's forum; we deserve to know.

Huh? Everyone knows why they did it. Cuban wouldn't sign a new carriage agreement unless HDNet was moved to the basic tier. Time Warner refused so they were forced to remove it when their existing carriage agreement expired. Cuban was a fool for thinking that Time Warner would give in to his demands when Time Warner still hasn't given in to the same demands by the NFL Network which has a far larger audience than both of Cuban's channels put together.

I find it hard to believe that Cubes would have preferred the channels be dropped if they weren't moved to the basic tier. That's just not smart business, and everyone knows he's a pretty good, and pragmatic, businessman.

No, there's more to this story; I'd just like to know what it is. But I probably won't visit these threads anymore; too painful.

And personally, if it came down to these channels (there is simply no substitute for HDNM) and the nearly worthless NFL Network (only 8 worthy events per year - everything else is covered like a blanket by ESPN), I sure know which way I would go.

For me line of sight is the main issue. I live in an apt complex. Dsl however is a much better product in my area than RR. I recently switched to verizon dsl from RR and the consistency and reliability trumps RR peak speed.

hdnet not on cable I feel has more to do with power than money or anything other issue. They(cable) don't want anyone telling them what to do. Why would they? Why would anyone? I don't think it is fair but I am not in charge. What we need is a list of who approves cable contracts and their emails and the dates cable contracts expire then you can show cable who has the power. I like hdnet programing alot It is the only non educational channel I would watch on a regular basis.

my 2 cents

July was awesome for HDNet Movies. More good stuff this month than I've seen in 4 or 5 of HBO and Cinemax combined. Burned through a case and a half of D-VHS tapes. This'll get expensive...

Thankfully August looks a little underwhelming, so my wallet can take a breather.

Where did you read this? What happens to current customers paying the $10 fee for PlatinumHD?

There's a lot of confusion about that. From what I can tell, as it stands they aren't going to stop billing you for it for another month or two, and then they'll credit back the difference

There's a long thread at satelliteguys about it plus a column on Multichannel News. I don't want to take away from the HDNet Movies discussion by talking about Dish Network's platinum HD offering. In fairness to Dish, quite a few other providers put HDNet Movies, Mav and other 24/7 HD channels into a separate HD only tier.

Watched Escape from Alcatraz the other night and it looked great. The DVD is non-anamorphic so this was a real treat. HDNet was one of the major reasons why I went to D*.
