TCA Winter Tour Notes
NBC’s ‘Community’ To Feature Dungeons & Dragons-Themed Episode
By The Deadline.com Team - January 13th, 2011

From Ray Richmond, who is contributing to Deadline Hollywood's TCA coverage:

The offbeat and quirky second-year NBC comedy Community that’s generated a growing cult following for its zany, genre-expanding style, has plans for a forthcoming episode to surround the legendary role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons – with its cast playing it for the entire half-hour. “They’ll just be sitting at a table playing,” creator/showrunner Dan Harmon said of the series that last season centered one memorable episode around paintball, during a TCA session in Pasadena late this afternoon. “But there are (things done stylistically) that will make it really interesting.”

This is the same series that just featured a Christmas episode shot entirely in claymation and stop-motion animation, another with Betty White doing rap and a third filmed entirely within one room that showcased a monkey stealing pens.

Community is “a huge experiment,” Harmon stressed. “Every time we do something different and have success with it, each subsequent thing becomes less and less of a gamble. If I’d had to play by the same rules as traditional sitcom writers, I’d have wound up making a bad sitcom. Fortunately, I haven’t had to.”

One critic asked Harmon if, with Comcast’s takeover of NBC looming and a new programming chief, Bob Greenblatt, poised to take the reins, he feared that a series as unconventional as Community could be at risk. “You know, I’m just a farm boy living his dream,” Harmon replied. “I will tell you that NBC is just so focused on whether or not the show is good. They’re dedicated to quality. It’s like they don’t know what a horrible strategy that is for building ratings. All I know is that I’m getting to do the show I want to do. I’ve got two seasons that no one can take away from me and everything else is gravy.”

This is the bottle episode that I watched being taped in December!! I've only seen the first act, but they gave me and my wife a copy of the script and it is hilarious.

ETA: Surprised that nobody has commented on tonight's episode yet. It's great to see Community back on the air again. Good solid episode to start the second half of the season.

Thought it was a good, but not especially great episode. Definitely had some good moments, like Winger running in the rain a la every cheesey romantic movie you've ever seen. Everyone barging into the bathroom to speak with Winger, etc.

Mezzanine?!

The D&D episode could be classic.

I think they told us it was either Feb 10th or Feb17th.

ETA: I just checked the script and it lists the d&d episode as ep 214. But that doesn't match up with the episode list on wiki which shows 214 under a different title airing on Feb 3rd. My guess is that the eps got shifted. My wife remembers them telling us that it will air on the 10th.

I thought it was a good episode too. Although I somewhat like BBT, it's sad that BBT gets more viewers. Last night Community's ep was a 100 times better IMHO than BBT's ep.

Ratings held up well against Idol.

Anyone know the name of the song that played as he ran through the streets?

"Nice sweater"

"Thanks...my dad gave it to me".

The previous scene where we saw Malcolm Jamal Warner, the wife says "he's got a Cosby sweater on". Next scene - sweater gag. Loved it.

I hate the episodes that over-emphasize the characters. I really could careless who's screwing who.

More weird, please. Less, "I'm dysfunctional and cannot express my love."

For this year they are planning to make behind-the-scenes videos for each episode based on viewer feedback. First one is up now:

http://www.nbc.com/community/video/c...crave/1272620/

I expect these will all be on the season two DVD, but if you have five minutes to kill online each week and you watch Community it might be worth bookmarking.

I'm late to the party on this show. In fact last week's and this week's are the first two eps I've ever watched. I dont know any of the backstory or history, but I immediately found all the characters to be likable. Can't wait to rent season 1.

"Likeable"? I don't think any of the characters are that, nor are they intended to be. "Interesting" is the word I'd use, in an evil way. Sort of like the characters were on "Seinfeld."

Eh? Pierce and Winger I wouldn't say were likeable but even those two have come further than the arrogant jerks they were in the pilot.

And what's wrong with Troy and Abed? Both of them are extremely likeable and the flaws they used to possess have been softened by being friends. Neither intentionally goes out of their way to hurt others.

All the ladies are flawed but are not in any way unlikeable. Even Britta while having annoying traits is not someone who is intentionally unpleasant to everyone else. I would hang out with all of them.

Chang is 90% horrible but even he demonstrates some nice qualities on occasion.

In that case be warned - those were "normal" episodes. If you are not wiling to follow this show to absurdity and pure fantasy you might not like what you see in other episodes.

Case in point, this week's episode. For a second there, I was pretty sure they were just going to let those kids get hooked on drugs, but then Chang came in to save the day. Best Anti-Drug campaign evar.

While I didn't think the main story this week was that funny as a whole there were lots of good small parts:

"WE LOVE DRUGS! WE LOVE DRUGS!"
"We love you drugs!"

"Are you ignoring me because I'm Korean?"
"You're Chinese"
"Oh, there's a difference?"

The one-way emotipenis conversation between Winger and "Screw you Abed."

What wasn't funny was the three minutes of audio NBC17 lost.

From the two episodes I watched, I didn't witness any of the characters doing anything that made me think of them as unlikeable. Even Chang showed qualities that made me like him. From my obviously limited exposure to the show, my favorites were the black guy and the Indian guy. Loved their fake morning show.

How have you missed this show, skyehill? It seems this would have been right up your alley. If you liked the last two-which were far from their funniest- you will be in hog heaven with the two Halloween shows, the paintball episode, the conspiracy episode, and, from all indications, next week's Dungeons and Dragons ep.

Lots of people feel this to be the highlight of NBC's Thursday schedule.

I don't have a ton of time for TV, so I try to limit the number of shows. Not sure why I recorded this the past two weeks, but I'm glad I did. You're right, it is my kind of show. And if as you said these were comparatively weak shows, I look forward to seeing the others.

I myself just discovered the show a few months ago. The Troy's birthday episode was the first one I saw, and I thought it was hilarious - still one of the best I've seen yet.

Since they're already running the promo, I guess I can finally post this. Here's my wife and I with the cast from the upcoming D&D episode. (Chevy was the only one who wasn't there. A stand-in read his part).

The woman who took the photo couldn't quite figure out how to press the button halfway to focus, but I didn't realize that until I saw the photo later. Once in a lifetime experience... and I get a blurry photo.

Yeah. I noticed him in the trailer I saw. I don't know much about D&D, but is there a "negative image" character? That's what he looks like.

I'm gonna take a guess and say he's a drow elf. But don't ask how I know that.

That looks like a pretty fun cast to hang out with.
