If their goal was to make me hate him, they failed. I like his character.

Me too. That was the point of my post; he's such an unlikable character that I like him.

I believe it's already done that ten times over.

At times, I wonder if the series is headed toward a place where sitcoms almost never head.

Actually, by heading to that place they are ending up with a sitcom where the laughs frequently fall by the wayside. On the other hand, other things, valuable things, often profound things emerge. It looks like the show could easily die in the manner of Arrested Development and then grow in stature as people slowly discover that it was there.

It seems that, in the manner of a phenomenon observed by many writers, the characters have taken on a life of their own and probably begun to behave in ways that the authors have not created so much as observed and reported... one example probably being Annie, who has of late become secondary to Jeff, replacing Britta, whose brittle cynicism may have ended up being too much like Jeff and Pierce. Pierce is probably another character who has ended up differently from whatever was conceived for him initially.

The group isn't really hanging with Pierce; he is hanging with them. His feelings are hurt when he feels excluded, and this is the primary thing that has been fueling his rage and antisocial behavior. The group's experience with Pierce seems to be the reason they are fighting Chang's desperate attempts to join them. Chang's increasingly frantic grandstanding is one of the funniest running gags currently going on, but as we see his character emerge more clearly, the deep undercurrent of sadness emerges, and our laughter becomes tempered with concern and pity.

John Oliver's Duncan summed it up in the "Friend of Ellen" episode as he was closing down the party at Jeff's: "I'm really lonely". He says it with a cheerful smile on his face to disarm as much self-pity as he can, but the sadness is there. House says "everybody lies"; Community says everyone is lonely, and the show illustrates this over and over. Sometimes it says everyone is lost, too.

It's a strange thing for a sitcom to do, and it doesn't always lead to laughs. But it's a brave road to take.

Pierce: You guys think I'm some kind of joke!
Jeff: This isn't disproving the theory!

My favorite gags this week were in the text but I had to rewatch it since I couldn't concentrate on the voiceovers while trying to read the screen.

Candidates:
Annie Edison - "I believe in Greendale."
Age: 19
Ethnicity: Hot
Boobs: Yes
Party: School Improvement

Leonard Rodriguez - "I remember all wars."
Age: Indeterminate
Ethnicity: Non-Hispanic
Nickname: Kid Cincinnati
Party: Whig

Alex "Starburns" Osbourne - "This is hot."
Age: 46
Ethnicity: Cambodian
DJ Name: Sparkles
Party: Legalization

Jeff Winger - "I regret nothing."
Weight: Fit
Ethnicity: Northern European
Kryptonite: Women's tears
Party: Libertarian

Magnitude - "He's awake who thinks himself asleep" -- Keats.
Age: 16
Eye color: Ultra-violet
Workoutmix: Black Eyed Peas
Party: You know it!

Pierce Hawthorne - "Screw you."
Age: 66, dick
Trivia: Followed BNL for summer
Favorite Roman Emperor: Caligula
Party: Pierce Hawthorne

Garrett Lambert - "I like ice cream."
Allergies: Pollen, penicillin, pet dander, peanuts, strawberries, ragweed, dust, hay, gluten, dairy, water, etc.

Vicki ...

Ticker news:

Don't forget to study for finals.
Remember to add or drop classes.
Human Being mascot: offensive to animals? More at 8.
Chess club moves meeting unexpectedly, refuses to reveal why.
Basketball team loses ball.
Chicken fingers shortage continues.
Professor Slater still missing.
"No paintball this spring" claims Dean.
Starburns: "My name is Alex."
School dance rate down 200%.
Reports continue of mysterious "air vent monster".
Dean suggests end of year picnic, implies "western theme".
Dr Ian Duncan quits drinking again.
Tickers: do we watch them? Story at 12.

There's couple of good callbacks in the ticker but my favorite has to be the "western theme" picnic. Is that an indication that a western homage episode will be coming? I could see Jeff dressed in poncho as the man with no name, Annie as a gunslinging rancher, Britta as a madam, Shirley as the school teacher, Troy and Abed as sheriff and deputy and Pierce as the villain.

The Leonard putdowns are funny, they should have left at least one of them in.

I loved those, too. I think I annoyed my daughter by pausing on every candidate's page to read the details. It was hard reading the crawl while simultaneously listening to Troy and Abed's CC show.

Yes, that scene was definitely for DVR users only. BTW, Jeff's card said "Kyptonite" not "Kryptonite"

I found it very odd that both comedy shows on at 8pm referenced Emperor Caligula. In Community, Caligula was listed as Pierce's favorite Roman Emperor, and in The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon referred to the situation he was in as "the last days of Caligula".

Especially since I probably couldn't tell you the last time Caligula was brought up on any other show or even in general conversation amongst my own friends, it was a little deja vu seeing it twice in one night.

Annie's age is incorrect too. She's 20 now.

According to Dan Harmon Greendale Campus Television are to blame.

Haven't watched the newest episode yet, but "unmasked Darth Vader" to describe Leonard is hilarious.

Loved Troy's description of the other girl in the election. "Yellow shirt. Hat." And the one for Garreth - "That guy's a mess. It's like God spilled a person."

They never show them in the classroom any more.

It's like they ditch class all day.

I laughed at that, it was good. Trying to open their books to chapter 4, and then sighing in relief when the Dean came in to interrupt them.

Perhaps reruns of 'Welcome Back Kotter' and 'Room 222' would be more to your taste.
