I do love the concept shows, but I feel like they need to be layered on to more 'real' episodes, the kind where we see a lot about the groups relationships. Sometimes it's the little things; the group trying to save Fat Neil, Troy learning that Jeff and Britta are not nearly as savvy as he thought they were during the drinking episode, them locking themselves in a room over Annie's missing pen, etc.

It's like what Winger stated in the pilot episode, that they had become a Community. The standard sitcom cliche is always roomates, co-workers that are thrown together. There is something interesting about a mix of traditional and non-traditional students forming a group at a non-traditional college (not your standard wild party University), such different ages, backgrounds, goals. That aspect is so well done that I hate to see it get lost in the more cartoonish style concept shows.

Eh, I don't need more "normal" in Community. The history of TV is littered w/ shows where they delve into the characters' backstories and relationships ad nauseum, and I've enjoyed many of them (at least until they go off the rails trying to come up with ridiculous backstories, etc.).

Anyway, I think we've had plenty of character development in Community. I love to watch it for the brilliant parodies, meta-jokes, etc. There's nothing else on the tube like it.

I completely disagree. If they had "had the balls" to commit to the concept episodes before fleshing out the characters, the show would have been cancelled in season 1. Modern Warefare worked because we already knew and cared about the characters. The concept episodes aren't just the actors playing caricatures of a stereotype, they are the actors layering a caricature ON TOP of their character.

Oh, and I the fact that Thursday's Big Bang Theory fell completely flat for me pretty much cements that that show is done with it's one-note joke, and that Community is by far my favorite.

Harmon had to answer for the implied blowjob that occurred behind the main actors. Said it wasn't part of the direction, but the extras (I think the guy is actually on the writing staff, as he's used in the background of numerous episodes throughout the series) did it on their own. Girl walks out of a door behind Jeff/Troy/Abed/Annie and wipes her mouth, immediately followed by a guy exiting the door zipping up.

Haha, awesome.

Link? He didn't get hit for a fine or anything, did he? That'd be lame.

Jeff: We're all fully grown adults failing a kindergarten project.
Kane: Can I object?
Annie: I'll allow it.
Jeff: Sustained.

And is it just me, or does Michael Ironside look like he's put on a few pounds? He had a very Jack Nickelson in A Few Good Men look going on there.

Troy: If we rub that, will it come out and do celebrity impressions?

He wasn't an actor -- he was a producer/writer acting like an actor.

I loved how the episode mirrored the 5 stages of grief they kept talking about:

Jeff in denial
Anger in the cafeteria
Bargaining with the school board
Depression at Troy-Abeds
Acceptance at the end

Clever episode without having to resort to all the gimmicks they've been using lately.

Is is my imagination or are they using a serious soft focus whenever they show Britta in close up? Maybe it's just the way things worked out, but it seemed to stand out in the opening scene in the study room.

She's looked odd all season. Maybe she's not aging well.

Regular episode next week, but in two weeks it looks like a 3-part finale?

I think our miscommunication came in that I consider the 3 episode grouping to be next week. This week is a single ep, followed by a regular ep and the 2 part finale.

Not sure what this indicates, but near the end of the presentation of the award Chevy seems to say everything is OK.

Alison brie covering a Childish Gambino song.

Apparently NBC is bringing back Parks, Community, and 30 Rock. All with abbreviated seasons consisting of 13-14 episodes.

They haven't said its a final season, just a fourth season. On a cable channel 13 episodes is standard. With NBCs current ratings moving to a cable model would actually make sense for them now.

Excellent ep this week with many amusing callouts, tropes and ridiculous class vignettes. I particularly liked the Brett Ratner gag and the use of Garrett this week. Annie calling in to Troy and Abed in the Morning Nights was a good laugh at the very end.

I'm finding Annie very distracting these days though. The more I hear from Alison Brie the more my mind starts wandering to how much fun she has doing other things ...

Last night on Leno with her naked massage story and balloon animal handling just added to that.

There's a rumor circulating that Harmon or Chase might not be back. I hope it's not Harmon since apparently Community already lost two show runners.
