There in lies the joke, you are hearing it out of context just like Gloria did.

Just started watching this show and the wife and me are loving it.

I can't believe Sofia Vergara one day would be in a good show, and I've watched everything she has been in.

I love the "themes" they use to unify the families' story threads. This week it was "Starry Night." Each story revolves around a starry night. Mitchell and his father go with Manny to see a meteor shower. Gloria and Cameron end up under the stars waiting for the emergency truck to bring new tires for Cameron's car. Luke does a cardboard display of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night.

Last week it was "Truth Be Told." Jay lies about killing Manny's turtle, before having to tell the truth in the end (thus bringing Manny and himself closer). Phil struggles with finding the truth about how an old flame feels about him (and which Claire intuits right away). Mitchell tries to lie his way out of an embarrassing comment he makes about his boss, only to quit his job when his boss forces him to come in on a Sunday or be fired.

These "themes" pull the stories together strongly, but subtly. It's extraordinarily clever writing, slapstick and nuanced facial expressions, knit together flawlessly. I've seen it several times, but I never tire of Ty Burrell's dumbstruck turns to the camera. As in the time he was performing some really awful magic for Cameron. Cameron says he has to go, and as he leaves, he does a grade school "trick" in which he makes a piece of paper disappear by tossing it behind Phil's head. Phil is clueless as to how he did it and turns toward the camera with a look of fear on his face. He does the same thing when he realizes that his old girl friend "Wants a slice" of the Phil pie. Priceless.

"One day I'm going to be a grandfather...and then everybody better hide their meat...."--Utterly clueless Phil once again....

The timing of that line and the facial expressions from Cam and Mitchell had us bursting out with laughter...amongst other lines last night.

I thought last night's episode was good, but not as funny as some of the past episodes.

Did anyone else think Julie Bowen looked anorexic in those skinny jeans? She has a beautiful face, but could use some more meat on her bones like Vergara

Yep. One of the first things I noticed this week. Those photos I saw online a couple of months ago were not just poor angles by the looks of this episode.

I always thought the massive veins in her arm were unattractive but looking at the images from earlier in the season of Bowen in her underwear they must have been shot a while back, because now she has the body of a corpse.

Yikes, eat a sandwich woman!

That pic of her in a bikini was shortly after giving birth again. She's gone too far though, she's lost too much weight, in my opinion.

LOL

Funny when they got locked in the garage, there's a huge phone nearby and they don't use it to call "Andy" (forgot char's name here) to get them out, instead they begin pressing all kinds of buttons and damaging that car (Ferrari?) is gonna cost dearly..

RIP Mom, we always love you 8/18/13

Been watching a bunch of stuff on Hulu Plus that I didn't bother with during the season. Loved Cougar Town and then moved on to this but unfortunately after two episodes I'm out. The shaky cam is literally making me sick. Did this get changed/removed later in the season? If not, I don't think I can continue. I didn't really find it to be all that funny anyway, but it had it's moments. Friday Night Lights in season one had shaky cam too, and it also made me ill, but they listened to viewers and toned it down.

Some people just can't handle a lot of camera movement. You must be one of those people. I have to be a little queasy at the start for it to affect me.

Sorry it bothers you. This is the funniest show I've seen on broadcast television in ages.

Did you watch "Arrested Development?" I recommend it to all who find "Modern Family" hilarious, because AD was similar, only more outrageous and wickedly clever.

They showed a commercial for Modern Family before a movie we watched recently and the entire theater was laughing. Modern Family: So good, it makes even obnoxious pre-movie commercials funny.

It's available on DVD from netflix. Probably available on other legitimate sources online, but I have not checked.

100% agree with you there. To me, Modern Family is a somewhat more accessible to the masses version of AD, but with the Office-style "interview" bits that AD lacked. IMO, AD was funnier, but the Modern Family team are certainly no slouches. The shows are rather similar.

AD was much more serialized. That show would have running jokes spaning several episodes - and in some cases would have a punch line appear a week or more before the actual joke (i.e - Buster's hand). And at times, the humor could be meaner. BUt w/ AD, you really want to jump in from the beginning - it's not LOST-level serialization, but about as close to that level of "were you paying attention" as a 1/2 hour sitcom has likely dared to come close to.

And as mentioned earlier - yes, all 3 seasons of AD are avaialble to stream via Netflix (as well as get on good old DVD)

Money does not buy happiness. It can, however, buy you a giant boat that you can pull up alongside happiness. - David Lee Roth
