Apprently from the threads there is not a very good reputation or impression of Palladia, the HD music channel. Personally I have really enjoyed in on the 42LH40 and Comcast, it seems to be what the store demos wish they could be. Black levels are good to my eye and sound is nice, with pretty good programming, from Iron Maiden to Sara Bareilles and Elvis Costello. They aren't spamming Soundstage, Storytellers is on from time to time. It's definitely clear enough to see sweat, makeup, and blemishes and see audience members in the darkness on the right shots.

My favorite was probably Dave Matthews Band at Piedmont Park, apparently only for sale on DVD and it looked fully 1080i to me, so unlikely to see it anywhere else at that.

There are no commercials and the only promos are excellent demos for the channel itself. I actually watch the raven movie.

To me it seems they have some good staff picking out premium HD content now and mastering it, FWIW. It's better than HD Theater.

In general I have no issue with Palladia's video or audio quality. But it does have commercials. I don't understand how you could have missed them.

Don't ever make the MISTAKE of buying a Samsung TV..
They consider THIS
normal on a two month old set..

Not only does it have commercials but it is edited for language.

I guess I do remember the commercials, but for like 30 seconds and usually not from one program to the other. My bad.

I'm probably desensitized by sports and Hulu. But even PBS advertises shows and sponsors, not to mention fundraising.

It's the only thing from MTV that you can actually see music.

Overall Palladia has been excellent from Comcast where I live. I enjoy it.

other than the fact that they repeat stuff so often, I Dont mind palladia. I've caught a few interesting concerts on it. The thing that bugs me is that the commercials seem WAY louder than the shows, which is obnoxious considering that i always seem to be watching it later at night.

They are a long way away from RAVEHD. Personally, I can't stand to be watching a concert that is broken up by commercials and/or promos. It's just not OK.

Palladia is now showing a widescreen movie "The Doors". Not many stations use the widescreen format.

Nice to see that.

That's because THE DOORS is an old transfer. Even HBO/CINEMAX, which crops everything, shows THE DOORS (and STAR TREK II, EVENT HORIZON, etc.) in widescreen. It's also possible that Oliver Stone contractually prohibited any cropping (as Woody Allen did for MANHATTAN in the VHS days).

I likde palladia.

pq ain't much, audio is decent, not great.

But where else can you watch some really good concerts
from some really good artists in hd?

I've enjoyed several.

Certainly better viewing than mtv or vh1.

It's a good channel for catching the occasional high profile music doc/concert film that may be coming to DVD/BD very soon.

Both the recent theatrical docs from Rush (Beyond The Lighted Stage) & Iron Maiden (Flight 666) debuted on Palladia HD days before the BD/DVD releases. IIRC, the most recent David Gilmour live video also popped up on Pallaidia before showing up in retail.

What I did find on HDnet that wasn't on Palladia was Green Days first
live performance on their latest album at the Fox theater in Oakland.

They cut the hell of it to fit a one hour slot, but I have yet to see
that anywhere but HDnet.

I always thought the audio on Palladia was just fine. It's the picture that had problems. Shows how crappy cable PQ is.

Bummer. I'd love to have seen that. Still can't believe TWC dumped HD Net.

I've seen some stuff on Palladia/MHD look pretty good. The awards show re-airs generally are pretty solid, commercials and the handful of HD music videos look good. IMO some of the transfers/dubs of a lot of the rest of the shows are suspect, however. I've seen multiple programs, some of the VH1 stuff in particular, that looked like they had been color graded to the point of excessive noise with super crushed blacks. Those VH1 Soulstage and Storytellers shows are a huge culprit. I've seen some 24p material that was smeary and overcompressed as well.

Since Palladia is an aggregate of material, much of it not produced by MTV Networks, their standards and practices and QC limitations are probably somewhat low. The Donovan Frankenreiter concert looked like HDV. There is a lot more diversity in terms of the way shows on Palladia are produced than HDNet which tends to stick to standard fare HD video 30i material.

I hope you meant 60i.

I'm not impressed by Palladia's PQ. Sound quality isn't outstanding (but not horrible) despite their use of EX flags. Rave had better PQ. HDNet has better PQ. The Black Eyed Peas concert on EPIX had better PQ, as well.

There seems to be lines on Palladia on the left side during its programming, not its commercials. Does everyone else experience this on Palladia?

I have DirecTV and I also have a slight line on the left of the screen when watching actual programs on Palladia. My TV is set to dot by dot (no overscan). It's the only channel I see this on.

No picture issues here from Verizon FiOS. In fact, right now I'm watching Joss Stone, in a short, very tight dress singing barefoot.

Picture quality is AWESOME!!!

I have Comcast and I see a bright line down the left side on some but not all Paladia programs. It's probably poor encoding at the source level. The only way for me to eliminate it is to switch to overscan (HD Size 1) on my Panasonic Plasma.

Figured I'd bring back a thread from the dead...

Anyone watch Palladia recently? They started showing a program from the BBC called "Later...with Jools Holland". If you haven't watched it you need to. Great picture and audio.

Here's a lineup from one of the shows:
Later...With Jools Holland
With musical guests Paul McCartney, The Black Keys, Elvis Costello and Neil Diamond

I feel weird saying this, but R. Kelly was on it and he killed it. And I'm not a R Kelly fan at all.

Also, I was never an Adele fan until I watched her "Unplugged". She was amazing.

- I've gained a lot of respect for singers I wasn't crazy about after seeing them on "Unplugged". I really liked Rita Ora and loved Katy Perry's cover of Hackensack.

Another show I really enjoy is "Live From Daryl's House".

I just wish they wouldn't play way too much country stuff. And when I mean country, I don't mean Johnny Cash type cool country stuff, but more of the sanitized bland pop rock with a tiny hint of the country twang that is so bland even the likes of Bon Jovi fit in. It is still good, but I wish they would have some VJs who can package the long form concerts into edited 30 min clips with the long form concert repeated once in a while instead of repeating th4e entire concert every single time.

I don't know why COMCAST and other cable providers just cut out the middle man and put out their own music channels.

I like the Jools Holland show.

I like the Storytellers thing too, but when they repeat each episode so many times, I wish they would curtail entire repeats and have edited packages of the best parts to play in between long form shows that are not repeated as much.
