In a fit of jealosy Gary contacted the Mob guy he knew, Duffy, to contract on Winona (and possibly Raylan. That was not clear to me). He got cold feet and tried to call it off too late, and Duffy's crew ended up getting killed, so he decided to turn on Gary for pay back and to close loose-ends. Raylan sent Gary off rather than doing anything to upset Winona, and because of that couldn't do anything to Duffy.

At least that is what I concluded.

I just watched Raylan's confrontation with Gary again and it's now pretty clear to me that Gary didn't try to call off the hit on Winona until after the first attempt failed. When Raylan asked Gary when he tried to call off the hit, Gary ignored the question and instead of answering, asked Raylan if he had any idea what the idea was like of Winona being with Raylan. I thought Gary's reaction pretty much established that Gary had been perfectly happy with the idea of Winona being murdered until the scheme started to collapse and Raylan was on the warpath. Is it fair to say that Gary is a weasel for the ages?

The reason Duffy wanted to kill Gary was that he feared for good reason that Gary would betray him. It was established that Gary was the only person who Duffy couldn't trust who knew that it was Duffy who sent the hitters after Winona. Duffy had set up the hit with his contacts from the "security community" and was clearly confident that they would keep their mouths shut.

Which also brings into question Winona's character regarding marrying the weasel. Here I go again, kicking her under the bus, but Gary is such an obvious weasel. Do we assume that she has/had no radar to tip her off when she hooked up with him...or...the girl just wanted the house, cars and stability (even from an a**hole) that she couldn't get from Raylan. Everything screams "me first" about this chick (not far from real life with a great many people). Also, she needs to go back to ash blonde. Letting her hair go back to her natural dark looks tacky...and get a boob job...and start being nicer to Raylan...and come on over here, bend over and get a spanking .

Precisely why she is distinctly Bad News for Raylan.

I agree. Winona is a beautiful, hugely appealing, woman. In fact, both of the southern honnies in Justified are in my wheel house. I think that Ava is at least as scrumptious as Winona.

I know this will probably fall under the "a leopard can't change his spots" idiom, but what exactly happened with Boyd that he completely changed back to a law breaker? I was one who believed his character truly changed and he had more than enough opportunities to go back to his old ways, but he kept on the straight and narrow. Then all of a sudden he's back to putting a crew together to take over Harlan under the Crowder name.

Is it like I said, "a leopard can't change his spots" thing or did I miss some specific event that caused him to revert?

While working for the coal lady, he saw an opportunity to cut a side deal that he couldn't pass up. Slippery, slippery slope ...

I think the writers were just waiting for the right time to start. There is very little good in Boyd and he had to prove that to himself first and the other story arcs had to work that out about Boyd before Boyd could rejoin the dark side so it would appear a forgone conclusion. Boyd has been shown to be a chameleon and you really don't know where he is coming from most of the time. And who knows, this latest may be an act as well. That is one reason why Boyd is such a great character. You never know where he is coming from.

All opinions expressed (unless otherwise noted) are the posters and NOT the posters employers. The poster in NO WAY is/will speak for his employers.

I agree that we don't know where Boyd will end up, even now, but the cynic in me is reminded of what one of my more cynical law partners used to say: "People don't change."

I believe Boyd started to lose 'faith' when Bo killed all of his crew, to Boyd he has not seen anything since then to reaffirm his short lived faith. After that he has started down this path, he doesn't really think it is the 'dark side' I think he probably still believes that he can do the 'so called' good things his daddy did and not do the bad things.

I think she really loves him. She's seen the good in him, that he can be kind and gentle. She knows he has a dark side obviously, but let's face it - a lot of girls dig that. She's also alone and likely lonely. It's something that's grown organically and believably out of the show's plotline, IMO.

The remaining brother takes care of the deceased brother's wife. An old tradition that could continue in the hills of Appalachia that the writers could be using for Boyd and Ava.

Geesh, what show were YOU watching. It was fantastic, in my opinion. I hate to see what has happened to Eva, though. I am consistently impressed with how well this show is written and directed; it's like a mini-movie every week. I'd love to see it on the big screen, can you imagine? It is easily in my top three or four shows right now, with Mad Men being number 1 (if it ever comes back), Southland at number two, and then Justified, and Men of a Certain Age battling it out for numbers 3 and 4.
