I was actually wondering if Winona would buy it at the end of the episode. When Ice Pick had them both at the wrong end of the barrel I was thinking that it would be a great way to get the audience seriously emotionally invested in whatever storyline came along. So I was a bit relieved when Raylan won the little game. But props to the show for making me think it was a possibility - I hate TV shows where you know the good guys will never die. Yes, I realize that's most shows.

That's the open-ended nature of American TV. There's typically no endgame. If you know you're only going to run for one or two seasons, you can put your characters in more risk and heighten the suspense accordingly. As it is, you typically can't ever kill off a popular character midstream unless the actor wants out for some reason, i.e. Mr. Eko on LOST.

Which makes shows like "The Shield" stand out that much more. Poor Lem

Never watched Dexter. Was going by what the OP said about the wound not being fatal. Didn't think IcePick's wound was close to fatal while pretty sure Duffy's was.

Thanks for the clarification.

FOR FANS OF JUSTIFIED

Elmore Leonard released, on Tuesday, a new novel entitled "Raylan."
The wife is reading it now, while I finish up the most recent Harry Bosch.

Duffy is the Red Headed guy that lived thru that scene , the other guy killed(behind the desk) was the Dixie Mob boss along with his personal assistant( the Blond) who was killed as well , Duffy worked for him as a collector of debts & arranging the use of muscle. Now Duffy works for the Detroit mob boss .

To me, Jere Burns (Duffy) will always be the guy from a short-lived TV show called Something So Right that I remember vividly only because it had the very lovely Marnette Patterson in it. Funny how a bad show can stick in your mind like that.

Anyone remember him from Dear John? That's where I first saw him. The show wasn't great, but Billie Bird was hysterical in it.

Good season opener.

Was interesting to see Dexter's Quinn have a role in the show.

Glad it's back.

IcePick was shot in the shoulder, so it looks as if he'll return @ some point ...
I just rewatched the Season opener ....
Looks to me that Raylan jumped the count & pulled the table cloth slightly early ... IcePick had no idea who he was dealing with .. He thought he did , as he does talk about the Miami shooting in the 1st season ......
Boyd really did mean to get arrested was my take ..... Just so he could cozy up to Dickie L O L

And it's not like Raylan could have gotten perfect timing due to the way Winona was counting down, it wasn't exactly equal intervals of time.

The pizza guy did it the same way, non-equal intervals of time between numbers. If I was made to play that little scenario, the way they counted down would have pissed me off.

If I was in that situation, the last thing I would be worried about is the "beat" of the countdown.

It took 4 'Lethal Weapon' movies to figure out the 3-count and they STILL couldn't get it right! Raylan cheating the count reminded me of when Han Solo shot first

Very cool prison conversation between Raylan and Boyd.
And an interesting get together in tonite's episode between Boyd and Dickie.
Not the way I thought it would turn out (although not everything was given away in the trailer for next week).

For a little while 'Justified' morphed into 'In Plain Sight' but it was another strong episode.

A good episode, not great imo, I'll watch it again and maybe I'll like it better. I am probably in the minority here, but to me Natalie Zea is hitting the wall, although she is pregnant, right??? More Joelle Carter and Walton [Shane Vendrell] Goggins please....It's still better than almost everything else on TV....

Any episode featuring Art is fun to watch. And Boyd's criminal mind is even deeper than we thought. Nice twist. Thought for a moment that Raylan would have a conjugal visit with Boyd the way the scene was played out. Loved the white supremacy Nazi tattoo as Boyd lay down on the weight bench. Uh-oh.

Finally, Carla continues to be smokin'.

I agree that any scene with Art is a lot of fun. The exchange in Art's office between Art and the soon to be killed Marshall Bill Nichols had me laughing hysterically. "WWED?", indeed! There were a couple of other WWED scenes that I thought were almost as much fun. I also liked the scene in which Art went medieval on Bill's killer, Terry Powe, in order to get him to confess that he had murdered Bill and betrayed his fellow protectees. That was great stuff. Powe was played by Frank John Hughes, who I remembered from Band of Brothers. Hughes is a fine character actor.

I agree that Carla Gugino looked great. She may be the most scrumptious 40 year old in the universe.

Too bad they never mentioned the first name of Assistant Director's Goodall. I have to wonder whether it would be Karen.

Notice the married and divorced so she would have a new last name. And her coming out of Miami. This seems a nod to another Elmore Leonard character, Karen Sisco.
