Tip: DVR sporting events and jump in when it is half over.
That way you can zip the commercials and finish at roughly the same time as the recording is done.wink.gif

Apparently, HBO jumps 7 years into the future on the final season and it's 8 episodes .. looks good on the clip ..

I'm thinking that's going to be an interesting twist .. and in the teaser clip, I keep wondering if Gretchen Mol / Gillian Darmody is in the nut ward or in some sort of 1930's era form of rehab for her addiction .. I'm leaning toward nut ward since she is pretty nutty ..

They'll also be jumping back in time to the late 1800s

So maybe they conceived of doing several more seasons before the end of Prohibition but now, they're speeding it up?

As of last season, Capone still wasn't the kingpin, who'd basically overshadow most gangsters of his time in real life.

I kind of wonder if the major players all decided they had other things they wanted to do!

they most definitely were going to tell several more seasons of story but due to the costs of the show and the middling ratings they decided to end it early...BE never achieved the critical or viewer acclaim of shows like the Sopranos and I think that was a major decision on ending the show early

In 2011, the series led all programming with eight Emmy® Awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Martin Scorsese). In Jan. 2011, BOARDWALK EMPIRE received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Television Series – Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama (Steve Buscemi).

They've had 4 seasons.

So another half dozen would be unprecedented for HBO shows I believe.

Actually, you'd think the prominence of Nucky would be fading over this time while Capone would become Public Enemy #1 during this time?

The first FBI Public Enemy #1 was not until July 1934 (John Dillinger).

Just found an Andy Greenwald piece on Grantland about the final season of Boardwalk Empire. Although Greenwald has reservations about the show, some of which I don't share, I think his attitude toward it is generally favorable. I am very much looking forward to the show's final eight episodes.

I have done that with events that I follow casually. No way I am starting a Game late that
I care about...friends coming over etc...to much fun to be had.

excellent article on Boardwalk Empire...a good show that aspired to be greater but never reached the heights of other HBO staples such as Got or even Deadwood...I always thought the show was very good but it was always missing something that stopped it from being an all time great...

No other show is so good in micro yet so disappointing in macro...the costumes are beautiful; the sets are gorgeous; the acting is across-the-board fine; and as the show begins its final season, it’s hard to say precisely what it’s all been about, or why

Boardwalk Empire was supposed to be a huge hit–that’s the general read on the show...HBO will demur that their shows don’t necessarily have to be hits...they’re in the subscriber business; they don’t need ratings the way that, say, Chuck Lorre needs ratings...but you don’t spend $18 million on a pilot episode in the hopes that you can create a beautiful-looking interior melodrama that loses viewers every year...and that’s what Boardwalk Empire became

Boardwalk Empire always seemed to live in the weird shadow of expectation...the budget; the presence of Sopranos writer Terence Winter; the sense that the show was a built-in-a-laboratory Frankenstein of HBO Golden Age tropes...

Buscemi was a member of the NYC Fire Department for 4 years. HBO will air a documentary Monday night that he co produced about the dept.:

Thanks for the heads up! I have setup the FDNY documentary to record. Until I saw your post and the piece to which you linked, I had no idea that Buscemi had been a firefighter.

Years worth of tensions come to a boiling point.

Love, love, love the Godfather II-esque Present, Past storytelling.

What a season opener- real shocking stuff, but pitch perfect in every dramatic sense.

Only 7 episodes left....

Just caught up, loving the flashbacks. This looks like a super end to Boardwalk Empire and we are relishing every episode. Love the name dropping to Barcardi down in Havana, wow, if only Nucky could get that. ..but we all know better. Love the call backs to the Commodore, it seems what goes around, comes around. Bravo so far to the writers of this great show, in it to the end.

The Joseph Kennedy angle was a nice touch. IMO, his Gordon's Gin and Dewar's Scotch trumps Nucky's Bacardi deal.
