Same here. They seem to have lost that special mix of light and dark. Maybe they felt they had to break new ground with Fiona, but it's becoming a tough watch. The previews for next week look grim. The lack of posts here this year is probably an indicator that we are not alone.

I think all the story lines except for Fiona's are excellent. She is a train wreck right now and fully showing the effects of having no one to guide her.

I agree, the Fiona story line is getting to be too much. It is almost refreshing when they move away from it. I could not believe the preview for this coming week's episode. She can't be that dumb or can she!??

Actually, ratings have gone UP this season, which certainly was one reason that Showtime renewed it. But if Fiona does take solace with the a-hole who screwed up her life (which the final scene seemed to hint at), I'll be quite angered. It's totally out-of-character (and, for that matter, so was the earlier subway-scene), no matter how things are falling apart. I don't mind the grimness so much but if she needs comfort, it would make more sense that she'd go to a stranger over him. Next week will tell the tale. My guess is that she gets locked up at season's end. She could even be off the show...after all, on the British series, Fiona was out by the end of season two! (And Kevin and Veronica were gone after season 3 or 4). So ya never know.

I just hope we don't get a Frank (in the hospital) code-blue moment- then fade to black- cliffhanger for the last second of the final episode of the season.
If you're going to kill him- kill him, if not- cure him and move on.

Well at least Frank was very adamant to not to be taken to a hospital, even in an emergency...

I think if he dies he will die on Sheila's bed or at least home..

In the previews for next week it looks like he's in some kind of make shift operating room getting a transplant. I agree with the Fiona plot being bad as I've posted before. Its starting to drag the show down. At least we have Carl in love to look forward to. Poor Mandy was pretty beat up. Can't imagine what would have happened to Lip if he had got caught. Will Frank marry Sheila?

They're not going to kill off Bill Macy's character.

Probably the biggest name in the cast.

Fiona has always been "the functional" in this dysfunctional family.
She historically has been the Shepard, the glue, the sanity and the strengthening anchor of all things Gallagher.
Now she is not and not only is it painful, it is aggravating.

She deserves better!tongue.gif

Yeah, but what they've done here is to hand off functionality to Lip...... He has grown, he has matured, now Fiona can go bonkers, and she has....

I agree that it's difficult watching Fi suffer, but it's wholly believable and even a likely scenario. Even though she was always the most functional and the "glue" of the family, she's also shown that self-destructive streak all along as well; it just finally caught up w/ her. It's the gritty realism of this show that's been a big part of what's attracted me and I find this season just as good as the previous ones.

Has Fiona hit rock bottom yet? Boy she's a mess.

Kinda had a feeling the doctor wasn't performing Frank's surgery correctly.

Now Frank may get a new kidney and liver. He'll be able to drink heavily again.

Seems she has!
What happens when you break probation? It doesn't seem like her probation officer has too much tolerance for BS. In the real world, if something like that happened would that land the person back in prison?

I figured Frank would find a way out of it (given Macy is the biggest star on the show), but I was hoping Showtime would have the balls to kill him off. Death by failed liver would have been the perfect comeuppance for Frank. It's not like he's going to learn anything from this; I fully expect him to get right back to trashing his new liver.

Speaking of which, aren't transplant committees usually apprehensive about giving organs to patients who trashed their own organ to begin with (smokers, alcoholics, etc.)? Doctors seem to know all about Frank's history, and they'd have no reason to think he won't go right back to drinking once he receives his new liver, so I don't see how this transplant was even allowed to happen. Surely there were other, far more deserving people on the transplant list besides Frank.

Yeah after the fake surgery, why even save him?

How are they going to pay for the transplant? They just sweep all that under the rug? what ******** plot arc.

I had a feeling when I saw the Dr. walking away w/ a cooler that he took something out, though it didn't occur to me that he didn't do the planned operation.

That's one thing that kind of bugs me about Shameless... they go to great lengths to show Fiona's decline and the dire consequences her actions have on her life- then Frank (it seems) gets a last second liver transplant out of nowhere from the transplant fairy without regard to his overall condition, fitness as transplant recipient, insurance or ability to pay, etc...
I call BS on that too....

Hahahah- I was thinking the same thing!
And I'm also wondering if they removed the poor donor's liver (or God knows what else) too to sell to someone else? A double scam....

He's the biggest name in the cast, at least when the show started.

So I knew they weren't going to kill him off. Guess they didn't have too many ideas on what to do with him, other than him wanting to get high even on his death bed.

OK, we get it, he's an addict.

Lot of it is repetitive too. Lip trips and falls into pussy left and right. These girls can't get enough of the bug-eyed doofus with an overinflated self-worth.

These degenerates get violent with each other but no drunken sexual assaults? Karl will headbutt anyone but he's all goggly eyes for Bonnie despite being horny?

See, while I think this recent plot development with Frank getting a new liver is a huge cheat and makes zero sense in terms of realism, I think this season and last season are better than the first two seasons. I dig the heavy drama stuff when it's done well. When it's hard to watch, you know it's done well. Emmy has been fantastic this season. Plus, this show still keeps me laughing out loud more than some straight comedies do. Mickey and Kev both keep me laughing. ("You are the worst f*cking pimp I've ever seen!" "Is that supposed to be some kind of insult?") I also think this season has featured Lip's best storyline to date. It's good to see him taking his future seriously for once.

Sheila, however, I feel has been largely unnecessary this season. She was especially annoying and even cold this past episode. Frank is on his death bed and all she cares about is using him as a pawn in a sham marriage so she can adopt those kids. And what state would even acknowledge that marriage, given the condition of the groom?

This year, the show's creators and Showrime are changing the show's Emmy category from Drama to Comedy series. Perfect sense in the TV world...now that the show has taken a more dramatic turn, it goes up as a comedy...while the show's earlier seasons had more humor but they were classified as dramas! Hey...whatever works.

Wow, at least they could have taken the right side kidney to appear that they've transplanted the liver, but I guess the left side one is more accessible?

I think hospitals are obligated to help anyone in the E.R. regardless of insurance situation, they'll surely bill them later but they can't deny attention in an emergency.

RIP Mom, we always love you 8/18/13
