But they are very short seasons.

I'm glad they renewed it for a fifth and final 10 episode season. So they should be able to end it properly. I wish that would have happened with the show The 4400.

This season we get 2 extra episodes for a total of 12 according to TvRage:
http://www.tvrage.com/Falling_Skies/episode_list/4

So after the fifth and final season has run, they'll have a total of 52 episodes.
I wonder if that will make FS a viable candidate for syndication where the usual minimum target is close to 100 episodes?

52 is the new 100. Shows-hour long ones specifically, no longer need to reach the magic 100 episodes to be viable these days. With streaming services in the mix, an hour long show can generate similiar profits in the syndication after market.

Dazed and confused over high tech.

I don't think it matters what the number is for this show. Serialized shows never syndicate well. They require commitment from a network and the audience and the most revenue from syndication is for the shows that can be dropped in randomly into a schedule in any order.

It might get picked up for another run through somewhere and sold to streaming services, but I would expect the TNT have low expectations about what they can do with this once it's over.

Is it really serialized though?

It seems as if they start pretty much in the same spot at the beginning of the season and end up in a very similar predicament at the end of the season, it's a cycle they've repeated pretty much every season, they must have stolen NBC's "Revolution" playbook.

Serialized or not, I'm still of the opinion that nothing ever happens. They group together, they somehow get broken up, they get captured, they're freed etc. And now the alien love child. Still, I'm a sucker who keeps coming back hoping for some logical plan to move the plot along, to show some type of progress as humans organize a resistance. But Noooooooo!

Hulu/Misfits 35 hours When can you schedule a block like that?
I see Falling Skies like that. Used to be a summer filler but will grow into an extra time filler.

I know it's an episode back, but I can't get over how incredibly cheesy it looked when the two rubber Overlords where mentally chatting in volcano dream space. Wow. Like, Power Rangers bad. No amount of CG smoke trailing off the rubber puppets was going to make that any better. Yikes.

The show has been a rollercoaster from the get go .. when Mark Verheiden (Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, Hemlock Grove, etc) .. was involved during Season One and the two episodes he wrote "What Hides Beneath" and "Eight Hours" .. IMO, we saw a glimpse of what "Falling Skies" could be .. and we saw something fresh about the theme of alien invasion ..

I have always really wanted the show to be great, and there is some greatness lightly sprinkled in here and there along the way .. but just so so much unrealized potential ..

I'm hoping for a solid wrap up when it happens, and I'm sticking with it till the bitter end ..

Randomly airing episodes isn't the question with serialization, though. Presumably they would continue to air it in order, but the question is how much do you lose if you miss random episodes? I think the "previously" segments catch you up well enough that viewers could make do.

Go back to VisionOn's original posting about syndication and serialized shows, where syndication is normally run in random sequence. My response was to that, indicating that you can't air a serialized show randomly.

Hopefully they would indeed repeat it in sequence.

That said, it seems that in most cases, repeats are being done in sequence. I believe that even The Big Bang Theory is being aired in order. Not exactly a serialized show, but over time viewing episodes out of order could cause some scratched heads.

He said the most revenue is from ones that could be dropped randomly, but as you say that isn;t done as much these days. There are plenty of serialized shows in syndication and I believe most of those are repeated in sequence. It takes a pretty stupid programmer to take a serialized show and not repeat it in sequence when in syndication.

Back in the day (1970's-80's)- as a kid watching re-runs of Star Trek on WPIX channel 11 in NY it was SOP to air episodes out of order. It was even worse when there was a two-parter (The Menagerie: Part I and Part II) and they didn't air part two the next day! This was pre-internet so no IMDB/TvRage/Google to check episode order, but I had "The Making of Star Trek" book which listed the correct episode order- and boy, WPIX was not paying attention to that list!

Back on topic... In the case of FS- it's vital to air it in the correct order.

It doesn't matter if the show is in order (and there are not that many serialized on major networks) because as I said, the shows that are most popular are those that require no commitment from the audience too. They are the epitome of channel surfing fodder. Shows that viewers can drop in on to fill time with no commitment. You only have to look at the proliferation of Friends, Seinfeld, King of Queens, Star Trek, CSI Whatever, Law and Order etc. etc.

Those schedule fillers are the ones that make the most money. Falling Skies alongside Heroes, Lost, Fringe etc. need commitment. Which is why you rarely see them being run on TV and not many networks are fighting for the syndication rights.

It's sad because a quality/complex show like Fringe in particular, would probably benefit from being shown in order five nights a week. It would be easier to retain all that happened just one night earlier rather than the full week between new episodes when it was first run.

OK, Someone start up & give me royalties for "The Binge Channel HD" , a new channel devoted entirely to binge watching / binge watchers, where Seasons of Shows like Fringe, Falling Skies, Breaking Bad, The Killing, Hell on Wheels, Deep Space 9, Lost ect , are shown in a minimum of 14 consectutive episodes a week (or more), which may be an entire season for many shows ..... ( Imagine the creative promos..)
I'm close to NYC & available for consulting ..

Better visual effects would only go so far in making this show more than tolerable. I'd rather keep the rubber suits and have an actual plot that shows the progression of the human war effort, instead of season after season of the same thing, both in terms of Falling Skies copying other programs and copying itself.

I guess I'm one of the few on here that actually like Falling Skies, and have watched the show from the beginning...which everyone needs to do to properly enjoy it. Yes, I do have some complaints though. The series has had its ups & downs like most, but I would like to see this story move at a faster pace. Also, I agree that some of the story line seems to get repeated way too often with the splitting-up of the Massachusetts Unit, and Dad pulling the disappearing acts.
