Classic Dave tonight, with guests Martha Stewart and Robert Plant. Brings back the expression 'must see tv'.

Big Letterman fan here. I try to catch the show every night. The Howard Stern segment on Thursday was awesome.

What's changed why the new thread?

edit: maybe I found why, searching for Letterman I found no real official thread, amazing one never existed, I also catch Dave at least once or twice/week. Great PQ in my market

I'm not sure what's new either. I haven't watched it in quite some time except for last night when Dave asked Martha Stewart, "So, do you still keep in touch with any cons." I don't think she appreciated that!

This show has been in two channel stereo. The 5.1 indication did not reflect the actual format of the audio.

I thought she rolled with it pretty well, but the whole segment was hilarious.

I missed this most recent episode, but he always makes some sort of prison comment. I'm sure she expects it by now.

Tuned into last night's show halfway thru Robert Plant's interview (Damnit). For once, Dave knew who his musical guest actually was! I always hate that he has bands on that nobody's heard of (especially considering Dave's demographic) and he's always saying "Yeah!! That was GREAT!!! Weren't they, Paul??" Whether it was a really bad rapper or Robert Effing Plant, it's always the same response. At least Paul McCartney was honest with Dave by saying he didn't like the show.

Now in NE Tucson, AZ with a cheap rabbit ears antenna. Got everything except KTTU (MyNetwork).

I've got the latest two dozen or so Letterman shows on my DVR just waiting for me to allot some spare time. Today or tomorrow look good!

[I don't even bother with Leno or Conan.]

I don't normally watch him (anymore), but I did tune in just for that interview, and I wasn't disappointed.

It's just too bad that the song he did didn't live up to the interview.

I missed this episode of Letterman with Martha on it, but in the past she's been overtly sexual, and downright funny, in previous visits. They have a really nice chemistry.

During the Howard Stern segment, Dave suggested that he was only going to do the show 2 more years. Then quickly moved on to other areas.

Yeah, I absolutely hate it when the musical guest isn't some sixty-something centi-millionaire.

For my money, the music booker at The Late Show is the best in the business. (I think she's a Rolling Stone magazine alum) Always a nice mix of breaking acts and established artists from all over the musical grid. I can't tell you how many times I've picked up a CD after seeing an act on Letterman.

The selection of musical acts is primarly Paul Shafers idea.

^^^ Well, he is the show's musical director and does select musical cues for the commercial break songs besides helping select the musical guests. Paul can't book a musical act though (new or old, established or breaking in, etc.) without a booker with the connections (PR people), clout (why do Dave's show first and/or sooner than others) and that personal touch that can steer talent away or toward Letterman regardless of the host's personality. Unless, of course, the musical talent is already good friend's with Shaffer from back in the old days and just wants to come over and play with the 'CBS Orchestra.'

Two of my favorites they ever had on were Keith Emerson doing The Nice's version of "America" with the band, and also Ian Anderson doing "Aqualung" with them.

?

As the musical director, Mr. Shaffer is the sole decision maker when it comes to the musical acts that appear on Late Night. The actual booking is a mechanical issue (legal), not an artistic one. Appearing on Late Night is considered desirable by any musical group.

I seem to recall reading Paul really doesn't get very much involved with the music segment. The segment producer is Sheila Rogers (the Rolling Stone alum) and it's booked by yet another person (IIRC, her name is Zelikson) on the production staff.

I suspect Shaffer offers suggestions, as does Dave or any number of others on staffers, but I'm pretty secure saying Paul doesn't have much involvement in the process.

^^^ Holy s***! I have a home-recorded "Late Night w/David Letterman" episode from 1991 when a Sheila Rogers (saying she used to work on Rolling Stone) joins the show and Dave welcomes her by showing her around 30 Rock. Then Sheila participates in a shot put competition in Dave's office to determine what her starting salary will be. It's funny as hell. Maybe I'll dig the old VHS from storage and turn it into a YouTube video.

As a Letterman fan I'd like to think this is a trend, however I think the win is due to both shows airing repeats this week. There are more Leno fans who rather than watch a repeat decided to check out the competition.
