There's a strange polarity among the Roman soldiers. In Blood and Sand, the Gladiators seems to mostly respect the local Roman guards (granted, it's because it was a numbers game, but you never go the sense that any gladiator thought he was an obvious match for any guard with the exception of Spartacus). Spartacus' victory over the guards with the wooden swords, for instance, surprised nearly everyone. In Vengeance, the guards seem almost buffoon-like.

So I'm having a hard time if anyone should really care about the average Roman guard (or legionnaire or whatever they may be). Maybe they're waiting to introduce the really bad-ass elite Roman guards the way they've introduced Ashur's elite killers?

Roman soldiers were equipped and trained to fight as a unit with shields, javelins, darts and short swords. Gladiators trained in various styles with handicapped armor, but essentially single, paired or specialized combat. So, one on one (or three), the gladiator should have an advantage, but in pitched battle the Romans would be superior. The historical battles that Spartacus' armies won were usually due to some tactical advantage that broke up formations or Roman leadership's mistakes. Claber's defeat was one of the early ones. There were a few more until several legions got involved and trapped/defeated Crixus and Omenaus and later Spartacus.

I don't lurk as much as I used to and I NEVER listen. Comes from being old and cynical.

Whatever the historical reality, the story being told here is that under the training of doctore, the gladiators who trained in the house of batiatus are supposed to be exceptional by any standard, far superior to roman soldiers with even numbers, and retaining an advantage even when significantly outnumbered.

This show is far and away the best in tv right now, and ranks with the legendary OZ and ABC's V, vying for greatest television show of all time.

It was nice to see Conan Stevens make an appearance (albeit brief) as Sedullus. Can't wait to see him in The Hobbit and hopefully he's still Gregor Clegane in Game of Thrones.

That last scene of destruction with intestines & other organs on the ground was one of the goriest to date.

Based on his comments & next week's preview, I'm still not sure Gannicus wanted to side with Spartacus or just didn't want to be anyone's pawn in this game. He definitely made it clear he wasn't siding with Glaber

This season seems filled with everyone trying to out-scheme & screw over someone else. Luv it!

Anyone familiar with Sun Tzu may recognize some of Spartacus' style

The show is getting better, but Sparty still looks out of shape and doughy vs. the other guys. They should have got him a muscle suit .

Yes, but he can be counted on in a face-off.

Yep, that scene definitely stood out as the fatality moment of the season...so far. If Segullus only had half a brain...oh, I guess he he did only have half a brain. I was getting a might tired of the swords coming through the teeth, neck and stomach. We need some kneecappers, foot choppers and other creative ways to shock and awe.

It's been awhile since I felt some kind of emotion while watching this show. Lady nights episode finally brought that old blood and sand feeling. At the end when they say it looks like gannicus made his decision. A hell ya came out

Love sports, movies, and games. Slowly some day I'll add a projector and screen. Until then, I'll build up my library.

- The problem is that he's currently playing Azog in The Hobbit, so he's in New Zealand right now. It was easy for him to shoot Spartacus, but not as easy to go back and forth for a relatively small (although important) role in GoT.

Aah..I did read that somewhere, but never assumed there'd be a conflict. Azog is one of the head Orcs, right?

Have to admit that I'm hooked again on this series for a lot of reasons (including this week's "face lift"). I've really appreciated Craig Parker's performance as Glaber. Glaber has become progressively more ambitious and vicious and Parker has done an excellent job of portraying that. The other actor that I enjoy watching is Manu Bennett. Since they began to open up Crixus' character late in the first season and have continued that, Bennett has really stepped up as a man who is torn in so many ways yet always seems, in the end, to do the right thing. Peter Mensah has been superb from the opening show and continues to stand out. This is a fine ensemble cast and even if Liam is not Andy, he is becoming easier to watch in the lead role.

Glad the show was kind of refreshing us why we dislike the Romans. Not that we all forgot what has happened in the past. But with sacrificing the slave girl and then crucifying any slave there's that refreshing dislike of the Romans IMO
