I really liked this backstory, possibly the best told in the show to date.

The show often excels at ambiguity but this instance seems overly confusing. Hope it's a clever hidden reveal of a mystery rather than an oversight. Odds are with this writing staff they'll pull it out. For some reason I found the backstory a do-not-care yawn, but tastes differ.

It could be that it reminds me too much of the to me boring story of Liber8 in SyFy's Continuum.

Why are people assuming that the misinterpreted surveillance of the brother, and the subsequent mishandled arrest, had anything to do with Finch's machine?

Over the next several years, it became generally known that the government is watching everyone. New tools -- such as these computers -- are being developed and deployed that can result in even deeper intrusion into our privacy. This is Vigilance's premise.

It's natural that Vigilance would come to target these machines as the pointy end of the government's surveillance stick. But that effect, not cause.

I don't recall if this was ever mentioned..

We were watching TiVo'd episodes with my son home from TCU last night, starting with Episode #17 "Root Path". I noticed during the opening dialog of that episode that in addition to Finch narrating the video, some of the narration was done by Root. smile.gif
I guess that must have slipped by me when my wife and I first watched this episode back in March . . . smile.gif

Don't ever make the MISTAKE of buying a Samsung TV..
They consider THIS
normal on a two month old set..

Yes, it was discussed when the episode aired. Hence the name "Root Path" for the episode.

Wow. What a cliffhanger. The entire episode took place in such darkness it was hard to see who got shot at the end and who didn't. I'm happy the core team (including /) are OK but what about Fusco? Did he make it?

I also don't think we've seen the last of Hersch (sp?). That autopsy report is guaranteed to be fake.

When does season 4 begin?

Stunning finale. I didn't see that coming and this whole season proves how much this show has improved overall and is right up there with the best of them.

Fusco made it. (notice he made Lt. a few episodes ago?) He was yelling at the end when the Decima assassins killed the perp and cop in the precinct.

That was one of those episodes where you are glued to your TV the whole time. Definitely not an ending I was expecting.

Anyone else notice the goof in the courtroom scenes? Greer started out beside Finch, but was in the seat next to the Senator when the Control woman was chatting with Finch about his secret being safe with her.

I thought the "What Machine?" line that Fusco delivered was very funny. For the past few episodes, it seems like everyone knows about the machines(s), so it was good to be reminded that Fusco was still clueless about it.

Indeed maybe that's why Fusco wasn't in the "7" of the protected list, also wouldn't Samaritan detect 7 rogue servers in her system?

I am sometimes surprised this show airs on CBS since it seems so far distant from anything else they have on. I like the fact we do not get the happy ending you expect from a television show. Now that I think of it Vigilance's tactics would have gone beyond The Machine's programming. I wonder what Samaritan will do with someone like Elias who is still hanging in the background.

I would think his assets are protected with off-shore accounts and in a multitude of different names and financial instruments scattered around the world.

Count me in on the didn't see that coming. I figured Root's servers were going to change all those data centers over to The Machine, absorbing Samaritan. Excellent twist of Decima being behind Vigilance to build their own threat to convince the government to buy. As much as I've struggled keeping all the threads fresh in my recollection, the way they came together made me feel like I had a better grasp on things than I did. Still wouldn't mind going back and watching key episodes though...

Insightful and I agree with much of it excepting...

"its share of inferior, wrongheaded episodes; this time they were concentrated around the midseason death of Detective Carter, played by Taraji P. Henson."
Heresy!

POI is easily the best, most intelligent sci-fi on TV

I recant my prior concerns as to where the writers were going. Fooled me well, without cheap tricks.

Try the one-two punch of watching PBS' Frontline: The United Sates Of Secrets first followed by the season finale of POI which is what I did late last night. It's an effective combination that stays with you for quite a while wink.gif

I was guessing that it was the old man who put Vigilance together and built Samaritan. He set the whole thing up in the beginning to get the ball rolling.

The machine did not make an error about the brother. The old man orchestrated that. He also created Vigilance but did not build Samaritan. He stole it.

There is something about this show I just love and something that really bothers me. Not sure about the bother part. I think it might be root and Shaw, I liked the show better when it was just John being John. The root piece just knowing everything and the machine talking to her, I just don't like it. I wish they would go back to their roots/basics.

In contrast the Root business is what makes this show for me. Love John as my fav, but a weekly procedural where John rescues people and throws baddies through windows show after show gets boring. This show is pushing the edge in sci-fi in informed, thought provoking speculation on what an AI might be like and how it might interface with humans. Just when I think I know where it's going, the writers pull a well thought out curve.

Darn shame they killed off Hersh, he could have been an interesting new player. I think he had a thing for Shaw (though he never showed it) and probably would like to put a bullet into the head of Control.

Hersh was shot multiple times and was at the Post Office courthouse explosion unlike Fusco who was not there. Surviving that blast would be incredible. But maybe they're stealing the idea of the unkillable Helena from Orphan Black.

Very pleased, and surprised, with the last episode.

I'm really looking forward to next year and to see where it goes. I expect the early episodes, at least, will focus on the 7 organizing a response.

Regardless, the basic plot of the show as it played out originally has dramatically evolved. I can't recall a TV series with such a dramatic shift.
