Watching NFL RedZone right now, and it's immediately clear that they are sourcing their feeds differently now, and the macroblocking and softness it had in previous years is a thing of the past.

Even Fox games being upconverted to 1080i look really nice.

Kudos to them.

Now if they could work on passing the Dolby Digital 5.1 signal, it would be perfect.

I'm watching it on Verizon FiOS in New York (VHO 5), Channel 835.

Yeah, it really does look beautiful.

Well, I have a H20 receiver and it keeps freezing when I go to the Mix Channel; I can't complain because I didn't pay for it and it suppose to be the free trial, but heck no that I would spend $300 on something that doesn't work.

Sorry, Maybe my post didn't belong here because I'm talking about Directv.
SFGuy's Avatar SFGuy 11:28 AM 09-11-2011
I am freezing up on mix and red zone channels too, this sucks. Calling directv now.

Just FYI, this thread is about NFL RedZone, not the DirecTV Red Zone Channel. They are two completely separate products.

I'm talking about Directv too. I refuse to pay the regular price for Sunday Ticket, but they gave me free Redzone so that I wouldnt quit Directv, and it looks great.

Anyone else getting audio drops? Picture is noticeably better this year, others are correct.

Comcast Chicagoland

Looks good but the Fox games are freezing and breaking up constantly, while the CBS games seem smooth with no picture freezing or breaking up.

Im getting occasional audio/video glitches on Mediacom but otherwise good stuff. Can't wait until we get close to 4pm ET.

I'm getting frequent audio garbling (momentary pitch shifts) on all games, and occasional macroblocking. The studio segments with Scott Hanson are not affected.

I am noticing the same thing. Watching on Dish Network.

All picture drops seem to be with the game feeds as the Red Zone bug in the bottom right corner is unaffected.
primetimeguy's Avatar primetimeguy 12:24 PM 09-11-2011
Picture quality is still poor on E*. Far below my OTA and even the local feeds on sat. But when you start with a poor feed from FOX there isn't much you can do.
UnnDunn's Avatar UnnDunn 12:53 PM 09-11-2011
Seems like they've gone back to whatever they were doing last year. All the freezing, glitches and drops have stopped, but the picture is back to being soft and full of artifacts again.

The DET-TB and BUF-KC games are particularly awful-looking.

But the CBS games look outstanding on my Dish Network.

I'm seeing pixelating on some games on both Comcast (St. Paul, MN) and the NFL Mobile app via Verizon Wireless.

I'd say better than FOX, outstanding is going too far. My OTA channel and and sat are both better than RedZone. But maybe there is something with the 720p to 1080i conversion that isn't right with the FOX feeds because they look so much worse. Or maybe it is just the FOX garbage they broadcast. Even OTA the CHI/ATL looks terrible compared my CBS game.
UnnDunn's Avatar UnnDunn 02:55 PM 09-11-2011
So for the afternoon games:

MIN-SD looks fantastic but has glitches and dropouts.
NYG-WAS looks really good, no glitches or dropouts.
SEA-SF looks pretty good, actually.
CAR-ARI looks really good, if a little dark and muted.

So everything looks really good, it's just that MIN-SD is showing lots of glitches.

?

I've had it before and I never noticed the issues you did. It looked fine again today, as in years past. My big beef is it's only DD2.0.

As for sourcing, nothing has changed.

I think changes in cable co compression are responsible for most of the changes. Agreed on DD2.0. Why. Why. Why.

Really? To me, last year's NFLRZ was always significantly softer and more artifact-heavy than watching the direct broadcast. The difference was significant enough to make me avoid NFLRZ some weeks.

I always thought it was because they were getting their feeds from satellite backhaul and recompressing them. Maybe that hasn't changed, but I have to believe something has, because today I found NFLRZ to be razor sharp and artifact-free (except in the cases I mentioned above).

This is my first year with Red Zone. Honestly color me unimpressed. Barely showed any of the game I actually wanted to see. Seems to show mostly Bills/Chiefs. The constant switching is fricken annoying. Sometimes it would litteraly be on a game for 5 seconds then switch. Perfect if you're ADHD or something. The Red Zone guy's voice annoys me. This costs me $10 a month or $40 for the entire season. Seems the extra $300 for Sunday Ticket via the PS3 would be worth it for me. I honestly don't get what the big deal is about this.

This woud be a better concept if you could pick which game to focus on. Even if that means staring at a blank screen until one of the 2 teams is inside the 20.

As far as the PQ of RedZone from last year to this, at least on Cox Cable here in AZ, the PQ was much sharper versus last year.

Personally, I couldn't watch RedZone by itself to watch the NFL for many of the reasons BCF68 posted. I use a 3 screen setup and for me make a perfect compliment to the main games on FOX and CBS.
As for the price, Cox ran a early bird special for RedZone of $29...very reasonable for what they are.

It's as if you didn't hear what Red Zone is prior to purchasing. What they show is entirely dependent upon what is going on at the time. If no one is in the red zone they focus on what the producers believe is the most interesting game, priority is given to one score games. The big deal is being able to follow the scoring opportunities in every game. Great for those without a local/fav team being broadcast (or in a crappy game) and fantasy league players.

If you want to focus on a specific game that's what your local broadcasts and Sunday Ticket is for.

If a game has minimal scoring and mostly playing in the midfield then you'd have a blank channel for much of the 3 hours. You'd really pay to stare at a blank screen for much of 3 hours? Hardly a sellable product to anyone else.

That's true until you factor in the video and audio quality of the awful PS3 offering.

Like others I had frequent video and audio pops and glitches on most of the remote feeds. The PQ was so-so and was soft at times but that may be Comcast's feed which has recently deteriorated across the board in my area. I thought that their production crew seemed a bit rusty because the transitions between and timing of the remotes was not very smooth at times. I'm sure that this, given their excellent performance last season, will improve quickly.
