Don't know if most will notice the differences, but it's worth a re-watch if you are interested in the series.

Nice tip - thanks

There's a review on the season at LA Times

It is listed at 9, 10 and 11. This is all the same episode right? The pilot?

I should boycott this because of what happened with Deadwood.

But I won't.

Perhaps I misremembered.

But I won't.

I was thinking the same thing as I'm sure many others are... but I won't either... I'd rather have three seasons of DW than not.

Micheal Mann & Dennis Farina - you have to at least give it a chance from history alone

No convincing here, I'll be here for the full race card. Even if it gets scratched early-- I'm in.

I enjoyed the pilot and think it has great potential, but we had a hard time hearing/understanding the dialog. Is it time to shop a new AVR & speakers, or was it a bit muffled?

I had to turn it up, but I would not say it's the reason. I'm sure you don't need new gear

Good pilot, just not for me. I have no interest in the subject matter.
I'll keep watching, see where it goes.

Was the Etta James tune in the original?

I'm guessing there are more like you-- not into the subject matter--- than like me. For me, this show is an adrenaline rush! Great cast, writing, locations etc. Santa Anita Park is beautiful. If the show takes off I'd love to see a season take place at the Saratoga meet.

BTW great scene with the "Jim Beam" line.

Same issue here--DirecTV viewer.

5.1 surround sound--center channel seemed real low and inaudible on many scenes. Had to hit the rewind on the DVR and bump up the sound during several exchanges (Hoffman, the Hispanic trainer, the drunken jockey and the jockey's agent in particular)

Yes...

In reagards to the audio comments some have.

I did watch a bit of it last night to see how it "sounded" compare to what was delivered.

It played as intended, but I can tell you that it is indeed at a lower overall level than most other shows airing on HBO (by design, it was mixed in a feature like style, which means it has a little more dynamics in it that a lot of what is on TV.)

I normally listen at fairly high levels and didn't notice any particular issues with hearing dialog. Many scenes do have actors speaking in low voices and the dynamic range of the audio is greater than many. So, turn it up!

The race at the 31 miute mark gave my system a workout, especially the Sub... Gotta stick with it: Michael Mann and Dennis Farina, all we need is a couple of guest appearances from Ray, Pauli, and Frank Hollman from Crime Story...
I noticed that Bonnie Timmerman continues to be Michael's casting director...Come on Bonnie!!!!

Classic! One of my favorites, and don't forget Max AKA Dice
Another of the great shows that slipped away too soon without proper closure.

And who am I to tell you-- Ray Lucca

TV Notes
HBO's Luck' Renewed For Second Season
By Nellie Andreeva, Deadline.com - Jan. 31, 2012

On the heels of Lucks official premiere on Sunday, HBO has renewed the horse racing drama from Michael Mann and David Milch for a 10-episode second season. The series starring Dustin Hoffman had already been working on scripts for Season 2, and production will begin at the end of February. The network had started prep work early because of the small window it has to film at the Santa Anita racetrack where a significant portion of the show is shot. Lucks second season will premiere in January 2012.

We couldn't be more thrilled with the critical response to this beautiful piece of work, and we are very excited about where David and Michael plan to take these incredible characters, said HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo.

Luck is a behind-the-track look at the world of horse racing and gambling's denizens - owners, trainers, jockeys and gamblers. Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte lead the cast, which also includes Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Richard Kind, Kevin Dunn, Ian Hart, Ritchie Coster, Jason Gedrick, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens, Tom Payne, and Jill Hennessy. Milch and Mann executive produce the current first season with Carolyn Strauss.

I agree, I also listen at what many would call a higher level and the dynamic range was very good indeed. I wish more TV productions would take advantage of a wide dynamic range instead of compressing the crap out it so everything sounds at the same level(looking at you CBS).

We worked very hard trying to make this sound as "theatrical" as we could..

IMO, the episodes get better (in terms of audio) as we go along... Ep 2. is actually my least favorite... Ep. 6 my most.

I more or less enjoyed the first episode and from the previews there seems to be potential. My biggest complaint about the episode was the choice audio for parts of the soundtrack and the how loud it was at times. It took me out of the what was being shown. However, things seemed to get better in the second half of the show. The scene where Hoffman was getting out of the car was really annoying. I was almost expecting a flying saucer to land. The audio reminded me of a science fiction movie and it was too loud. This type of drama doesn't, to me at least, doesn't seem to need some overt soundtrack like some action movies. It was almost like they were purposely trying to distract you.

I attribute this to Mann, it's not the first time we've seen (heard) it. I agree it's distracting. To me it signals a lack of confidence in the narrative.

So far, the narrative is pretty murky. All that "pick 6" betting action was a jetliner of jargon just flying over my head. I know Milch is fine with that, and I'm fine with that because I'm fine with Milch, but I can see a lot of less determined viewers deciding it's not worth the trouble. It doesn't have that big-action thing going on like 'Deadwood' that could keep them tuning in, either. This one might be a hard sell (but not as hard as 'JfC' - a show I rather enjoyed in spite of, or maybe because of, its obfuscations).

I agree, but one man's obfuscations are another man's proverbial routine- a day at the races. To survive, this show will attract and create an entire new Milch following.

Finally got around to watching this last night, and I was thoroughly entertained. It's good to see David Milch has some focus back after the John from Cincinnati mess (although I do hope we get to see Ed O'Neill doing more Milch dialog at some point)

I think we'll see W Earl Brown (Dan Dority) in the next few episodes.

While part of me says "How is that possible?" (Milch is a rare and acquired taste - sort of like single malt Scotch), part of me fervently hopes it's true. If Milch suddenly becomes trendy in a, say, David Lynch 20 years ago kinda' way, maybe he would be encouraged to do a follow-up season of 'John from Cincinnati'! gwsat & I would absolutely watch. And we'd probably be real lonely.
