Thanks NetworkTV, sounds like it might be a local issue then
I noted the same thing here in the Prime Suspect thread(also NBC) but never heard back if anyone else had the same issue.
I really like HD digital 99+% of the time but occasionally(minuscule % really) it can look worse than analog, particularly with strobes or in both these cases emergency lights with a dark background. I really don't look forward to CBS(O&Os) adding subs, I really never see this on CBS other than strobes during live events like the Grammys which you'd probably need a 40+Mbps bandwidth for an extremely short period of time and I can understand why this is not done.

Really bad macroblocking on the emergency lights here in Phoenix too. I record OTA not cable, so it sounds like our locals suck and NetworkTV has a local that doing a better job of transcoding.

BTW, I also saw really bad macroblocking in one of the dark scenes at the cabin.

Yeah I'd prefer that too.

The least they could have done was to make the "good wolf" a hot chick and then they could have played up all the tension between the fiance and the wolf due to him hanging out with the wolf all the time.

The actor who played the "reformed wolf" who tried to help the main guy was the best part. He also played "crazy-eyes" Donny on My Name is Earl. I was not really surprised at the end though. I think Once Upon a Time is a little better.

I thought the actor playing the cop who was one of the last Grimms was awful and the fellow with the earrings, who played his partner, only marginally better. Despite the failings of its leads, I plan to stick with Grimm for a while at least. I love the actor with the glint of madness in his eye who manages to keep his evil inclinations at bay with a healthy regimen, which includes lots of pilates. The guy is good and his part was entertainingly written. I thought the weird postman kidnapper was funny, too. If the show can maintain that kind of lighthearted touch, I'll be pleased, despite my dim view of the Tom Cruise clone playing the Grimm heir.

By the way, Once Upon a Time has shown me a lot more than Grimm has so far.

Typical of NBC, they're repeating the soon-to-be-dead Prime Suspect day after day but no repeat of the one show they have that actually scored good ratings. Why no repeat it for all those people that missed it?

They did repeat the Grimm pilot, as well as the Chuck season premiere, last night. It is also scheduled to air Tuesday on Syfy.

Uhh... because healthy shows don't need extra help.

For the record I couldn't stand Prime Suspect and Grimm is just diffrent enough that I will watch it until it the bitter end. I actually deleted Prime Suspect in the first 20 minutes from my DVR list.

I liked this pilot. I'll watch it for a couple of weeks to see if I still enjoy it. I was certainly hoping Chuck would have done better.

Yeah, ok. This is some corny a$$ $hit. I still liked it though. At times it seems like a darker version of Once Upon a Time. Other times it is much lighter. I'll keep watching to see where this goes.

Although Routh is another Hollywood pretty boy, he is quite tall, unlike the diminutive Cruise and Grimm's star, David Giuntoli. IMDb lists Giuntoli's height as 5'11" but based on what I saw of him in the Grimm pilot, if Giuntoli is 5'11" tall, Cruise is 5'10".

I wish each episode would be repeated on Syfy. That's the only way I can watch it... Fringe & Supernatural are taking up my DVR on Fridays. Or I guess I can wait for the reruns (hoping they air in order).

Well, if you search Syfy's schedule, it looks like there will be a 4 episode marathon on the 22nd. At that point, only 4 episodes will have aired so it will bring things up to current.

So, i'm just going to keep an eye on Syfy as i'm betting episodes will be shown in spurts when they have breaks in their schedule.

I actually liked this, a lot. I was expecting it to be much worse then it was. I loved the atmosphere and how it looked like a fairy tale with all that moss and such. The creatures were pretty cool and I love the concept. I am definitely in for the long haul, so far.

This is what I'm talking about. NBC has (what appears to be) a semi-hit, yet they've scheduled it against similar shows that people who would watch Grimm already watch. So instead of repeating that cop show no one appears to care about 3 times a week, show Grimm again. It's like NBC just wants to keep failing over and over and over. If a layman dummy like me can think of these things, why can't they?

Hmmm. The more I look at this the more it looks like the blocking must have been in the original material before the actor's titles were added.

[I had to rescale and compress this quite a bit to meet the forum's limits which is why the block look softer that you'd expect.]

So most of you guys didn't notice this?

Ooops. I see I forgot to eliminate the background pixels from the rescaling.

Hmmm. I guess that means that AVSForum really can handle an image bigger than 1200x800 even though that's what they claim in the upload tool.

I think I did. I watched something recently that looked like this and I freaked out and changed inputs thinking it was an HDMI issue. I guess I was watching Grimm when it happened.

Good catch Mac I just rewatched that segment(10 min into the show and paused it exactly where your screen shot was taken) and saw as you did. Titles for the most part stayed clear but the background really looked bad I agree that somehow the distortion must have been present before the titles were added When I see macroblocking on bitstarved SD channels the titles are always the first things to get fuzzy, this is odd.
I posted a similar question in my local OTA forum but no one has responded. Either they aren't noticing it or aren't watching these shows.

But it was more than macroblocking. It looked like an 8 bit picture or something. There was posterization all over the place. I've had something similar happen with HDMI over the last six years on rare occasion. Which is why my first thought was that it was an unusual HDMI issue.

If it was just macroblocking it wouldn't have bothered me as long as it was quick. If macroblcoking was consistent I would have turned the show off and never watched it.

Yeah Mac, I caught that too. Was pretty nasty, but it didnt last very long. Far worse than the macroblocking I see during many CBS NFL telecasts.

I really like the look of the show, and the sidekick is pretty good. I'll stick with it for awhile.

I have seen that sort of distortion on SNL during musical acts with fog and backlight, especially if the camera is moving. Probably the compression algorithm just can't handle these sort of shots.
