For the first part of the show I liked the movie trailer and sound track parodies and the best friends digital short. The other bits were nothing great.

The cold open was good just to see Kristen's spot-on impression of Greta, and the return of Darryl. I've only see up until through the ripoff movie trailer for New Years, but I've liked most of it. Sudekis is funny in the Japanese skit each time they do it, but the bit goes on too long.

The real Alec Baldwin seems like a giant douche, but he sure is consistently funny on SNL.

She was awful. So boring. In an interview earlier this week she talked about how all the writers wanted to feature her boobs...what happened to that?! I loved the fake movie commercial, but not much else. Although Kristen's flirting expert was humorous at times.

I thought it was a solid show. I have seen more funny shows this season than any other year in recent memory, and I am inclined to not cut SNL much slack.

Others think the SNL has perhaps the best HD quality on the networks? I would be hard pressed to find something better.

If others agree, to what do you attribute the great HD quality?

It's not the best, but it's up there. Reasons, you ask? It's fairly simple.
  • Lack of motion
  • High-tech production
  • Your local affiliate runs full-bandwidth
  • You have nothing else like it to compare to

She is an actress.

She played smurfette in "the smurfs" which made $420,000,000.

Flat even lighting that's easy to compress. Mostly close ups that look good soft. All studio production except for the fake commercials and Digital Shorts.

good show last night. most everything worked.

finally kristen created some new characters that were funny instead
repeating her old ones that she had run into the ground.

loved her finnish interview spot.

There is also always a lot of good audience chatter and laughter in the rear channels as well which I enjoy. Many of the other network shows don't seem to offer anything for the surrounds.

Thought Alec Baldwin's American Airlines bit on Weekend Update was hysterical. Balwin, like all good comedians, has never had any problem poking fun at himself (and he certainly gives himself plenty of opportunity ). Wish he and Seth had played it completely straight though; "breaking the forth wall" didn't add anything; would have been funnier without that.

Cant get enough of impression skits & there were 2 !!

al roker, penny marshall, psh, clint eastwoods stare/pants, yea what happened to the spin doctors ??

They should do those movie rips in 2.35 widescreen format so it looks like a movie trailer rather than fullscreen where it looks like its a tv show.

oh, kristen wiig is hot as a blonde.

I'm surprised Wiig did the Barrymore impression. That's usually the domain of Abbie.

I watched most of the first half up until Weekend Update and it was ok. I figured the show was going to be really off the wall with Katy Perry hosting but it was lackluster. I watched the second half a couple days later and I fast forwarded through most of it. The last segment at the club stuck in my mind just because it was sooooo loooong.

Didn't Anne Hathaway already play Kate Middleton with the lowbrow Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip? Why was the Princess surprised when they started talking to her in their cockney?

Kristin Wiig does look smoking as the blond flirty girl.

NBC and CBS are in 1080i so they both look great. The late night shows on both are in amazing HD quality.

I also didn't like them breaking the fourth wall.

However, when I was watching it I kept thinking that they would have to somehow make it perfectly clear to every brain-dead twit watching that it wasn't a real American Airlines pilot. For legal reasons.

They can make fun of Obama and other public figures, because the President can't sue TV for parodying him. But NBC's lawyers were probably uncomfortable about the legal options available to American Airlines. Or they just didn't want to alienate a network advertiser.

Breaking the fourth wall? I thought that's talking directly to the audience (ala Ellery Queen). It's more like breaking character IMHO.

Holy crap I know. It was hilarious but sexy as hell at the same time. That was definitely my favorite part of the night. Robyn's dancing might have been the second funniest thing.

WNBC-DT NYC FiOS

Something was wrong with SNL for the opening bit.
3/4 of the screen was blurry including the NBC logo.
I wonder if it will be fixed for the West Coast.

They were trying to make to seem like a home movie camera which is why the video is grainy on the top but the rest of the video being blurry had to be a technical problem.

Yeah, that seemed like by-design mixed with some errors. I only watched up through the Buble commercial, but I thought it was great so far. Looking forward to the rest later. I lost it at MIA's gun scene and Michaels reaction to it. Good stuff.

Makes me remember why I have not used or watched a VHS tape in ten years.

You can never judge a show by its pilot episode or the half season following it.
