I was just going to post a thread on this. The picture quality is superb. Plus the production is top notch. It's good to see college basketball back on NBC. Wish they would put some more games on, including games on the NBC over the air. It's been awhile since NBC has aired college basketball.

To bad NBC is ruining the rebroadcast by squishing the video to add the score ticker at the bottom of the screen.

It's very odd that they're doing that, as it's not necessary... their graphics are above the ticker anyway, so they don't need to squish it like that.

Watching The USA Canada women's Olympic qualifying final via DirecTV. Does the grass lose definition and become one giant green blob whenever the camera pans?

It sounded like the announcers were calling the Rangers vs Devils game from a bathroom stall at MSG last night.

Are you talking about the overall presentation or the video quality?
On FiOS I've noticed macroblocking on most of the camera shots with medium to fast camera panning.
There's a replay at 3pm ET on Monday.

I suspect NBC/Comcast must be doing something funky with the signal going to all the providers except themselves. NBCSN looked great when I was on Comcast yet I'm seeing loads of compression issues on DirecTV. It's like as if they are deliberately making the channel look bad for everyone else just so Comcast can say "if you want to see this channel in the best quality sign up with us." Too bad for them I'm not going back to Comcast. One channel looking better does not make up for the rest of their HD channels looking cruddy compared to DirecTV.

Yes, because it's totally inconceivable that DirecTV could be at fault here, for any number of reasons that may or may not be malicious. It must Comcast that is spending extra money to send out two separate signals. rolleyes.gif

So why are others in this thread on other providers complaining about compression issues that I never saw on Comcast? Please. Oh and keep that eye rolling to yourself buddy.

It's not just NBCSN that has PQ issues.
On MSNBC there is extra macroblocking that appears during animated transitions that happens on FiOS and Direct TV.
There has to be an issue with how the channels are being encoded by NBCU Comcast.

This post in DSLReports form talks about the PQ and compression of the NBCU Comcast Channels on FiOS,

Got another update. NBC Universal is over-compressing the USA / SyFy / Bravo feed they are sending Vz (now being sent so all 3 can fit into one QAM). They have been notified but have responded that no other provider has complained. So, Vz has to convince them that it is an issue and keep work on getting it fixed."

If this is true then NBC U is compressing their MPEG2 channels to fit three into one QAM space for Cable TV.
Anyone know if they have plans to switch to MPEG4?

Comcast ensures that their channel isn't over-compressed on their systems. What incentives do Comcast's competitors have to ensure that same PQ?

Nope, beside the fact that would be illegal, it would also require multiple feeds, which would be a lot of trouble for little reason.

A/B'd the NBC feed and the NBCSN feed at the end of the Hockey game when they we're showing the same feed, right before NBC went off. On Cox Cable the NBC feed was noticeably much better. the NBCSN version looked washed out and bit starved... The NHL Ch. feed also looked pretty poor. I too have noticed USA/SyFY/ Bravo video degradation, on Cox.....Speed Ch. is a joke, barely wide-screen let alone HD. Velocity has also taken a step back.

On NBC and NBCSN sporting events they keep alternating between the regular semi transparent white logo to a larger darker embossed logo that looks bad with darker colors behind it.

Anyone know why there are two logos and which one will be used on screen during the Olympics?

I was watching the USA basketball game earlier and seen the lights commercial the bottomline and the show itself looked like it was framed 16:9. The commercial that shows what sports they are doing this fall is framed for 16:9. Maybe they are waiting until after the olympics to letterbox the sd signal?
