I have one song from David Cook, I could probably delete it.

RIP John, my best friend. Oct 17th 1966 - Nov 13th 2010

RIP Victor, my dad, June 26th 1927 - April 13th 2011

Yea, there have been a few catchy pop songs, country and otherwise, released over the years. But the vast majority of ex-Idol stuff I've heard is way too generic and hackneyed in the songwriting dept., IMO. I watch the show more for the competition aspects, the drama and a basic curiosity factor, I guess.

Very few of the contestants are or will ever be great "artists" the way the judges throw around the term so easily. I find it irritating how they typically shower departing contestants with glowing praise and expectations of great future success when you know 98% of them are never heard from again. Coming to a cruise ship or the local stripmall suburban bar for a weekend performance near you, perhaps. But that's about it. I feel bad for these contestants who receive such intense spotlight time on Idol, and then it all goes away so quickly. At least the top 10-12 get to prolong it a little while longer with getting to go on the Idol tour. Thereafter, some might get a couple blips of attention within the first 2-3 years after their Idol experience, but then it drops off into the abyss. I can only imagine how surreal and disheartening that must be.

Mourning the disappearing usage of the -ly suffix. Words being cut-off before they've had a chance to fully form, left incomplete, with their shoelaces untied and their zippers undone. If I quote your post (or post in your thread) without comment, please check your zipper.

If you consider the music industry (itself) I'm not sure they haven't done very well as an overall collection. One can argue to some degree Idol hurts their chances (backlash) and in today's market the air time might be worth one viral YouTube video. Throw in the non music careers like McPhee starring in a network TV show and it opens doors... that's all pretty much one can hope.

RE: Elise.

I've been trying to think of who she reminds me of in terms of looks. I think it's a puppet character. Miss Piggy perhaps. I mean that in the best possible way.

Although not an AI winner, Chris Daughtry puts out some good music .. I've collected it from the get go and consider him a great Rock act .. of which there is so little of these days ..

Yes, Daughtry is doing quite well. He's got a good traditional rock vocal delivery and he seems like a good guy, but I'm not a fan of his music and pretty much expected that I wouldn't be based upon his cited musical influences back when he was on the show as a contestant. But I can understand why many would enjoy him.

It should also be noted that most of these kids were not making any money before Idol came along. It is a "no lose" situation for an 18 year old cashier from Kansas. I don't think they are blind to the realistic success of most Idol contestants. Even if they never get a record deal, the Top 10 each gets over $100k for the show and tour alone, any side promotions or appearances just add to it.

It reminds me of the college basketball "March Madness" tournament, where you will see 97% of the seniors walking off the court knowing that they will never play in a televised basketball game again, but they had a great experience.

I agree outside of the eye of the storm (which I can see how one easily becomes caught up in). Also, the show makes no attempt to find marketable talent and or artists. To a large degree that's discouraged and as such you lose the uniqueness often required for a successful career.

AI certainly does present a unique and possible money making gig for some .. however, if you've ever lived on the bar / festival / backwoods / chitlin / casino circuit, it can grate on you sometimes given that most if not all of these folks essentially walk in with no dues paying .. I know that's the way it is with a lot of todays Pop entertainers and that the trend has been that way back to the 1950's, maybe even earlier ...

Back in the day, most would build their chops and fans by hitting the road and working the grind ..

Not at all surprised that Colton was eliminated. I have been following DialIdol for a while, and he has never been near the top except during the week when he performed last. The DialIdol score is usually a poor metric these days because one bad area code could flub the data in a significant way, and it takes time to filter them out through Geopredictions and get a better gauge of the true busy percentage. Here are my interpretations for every week since the Top 13:

Top 13:

Jessica
Phillip
Hollie
Skylar
DeAndre
Colton
Heejun
Joshua
Jermaine
Erika
Shannon
Elise
Jeremy

Top 11:

Joshua
Hollie
Skylar
Phillip
Jessica
Colton
DeAndre
Heejun
Elise
Erika
Shannon

Top 10:

Jessica
Colton
Skylar
Joshua
Phillip
Elise
Hollie
DeAndre
Heejun
Erika

Top 9:

Joshua
Jessica
Elise
Phillip
Colton
DeAndre
Skylar
Hollie
Heejun

Top 8:

Skylar
Joshua
Jessica
Colton
Phillip
Hollie
Elise
DeAndre

Top 7 - Week 1:

Joshua
Skylar
Jessica
Phillip
Colton
Elise
Hollie

Top 7 - Week 2:

Joshua
Jessica
Phillip
Skylar
Hollie
Elise
Colton

And yes, I am suggesting that the Bottom 3 last week was fake. I think Idol intended to use the Save at the Top 7 very early in the season, and counted none of the votes that were sent in, meaning that all seven contestants could be eliminated and Saved. There was no evidence to suggest that Jessica, let alone Joshua, who was clearly #1 that week, were in the Bottom 3.

There is no evidence that week 7's results were fixed. Had AI ever been found out that would have been the end of them. It is quite possible that people simply took it as obvious that Joshua and Jessica were safe and didn't vote.

Ratings were low and they needed a boost, even if it was just temporary. If they had planned to use the save early in the competition and drop all counts for every contestant to zero during that week, there wouldn't be the issue of wrongfully sending a contestant home. The save was created first and foremost as a tool for forced drama and I wouldn't be surprised that when it was first drafted, that it was engineered to allow for such a preposterous scenario to occur. Different reality competitions have their little gimmicks and this is Idol's one. The save has also been known to considerably boost voting totals for the rest of the season, which makes using it even more appealing. The week of the Top 6 is the last week that it can be used, meaning that it would be obvious that they would be using it if it has not already been utilized, so a preplanned Top 7 Save would pack decent punch while giving a significant boost to a producer favorite.

There have been a lot of people, including Presidents, who did stupid things that was the end of them. So I'd never rule this out. There has also been a shakeup this week at the top of Freemantle. On the other hand, it would be very hard to keep this a secret, asjkii I would think AT&T would have to be part of the conspiracy.

MalwareDie, that is just pure unsubstantiated speculation on your part. There are actually strict federal guidelines governing all television reality competitions.

We already know that they "reserve the right" to not count any any votes that "in their opinion" are generated by botnets.

I'd be willing to bet that the number of "questionable" votes is always much larger than the differences between contestants so if they wanted to, they could manipulate the placements however they want on any given week.

I doubt they do it very often, because the placement is probably close to what they want anyway. But, it also wouldn't surprise me if they do a once a season stunt to put a really popular contestant in the bottom three to generate a lot of buzz and pump up the ratings.

Depending on what your music taste are Idol does surprising enough produce some really good singers that become stars..

Carrie Underwood..Maybe the best
Kelly Clarkson.... Also a huge hit
Fantasia Barrino... Didn't like her on show...but love her now
Jennifer Hudson....Same as Fantasia
Chris Daughtry... Don't care for rock, but do like alot of HIS music.Seems genuine
Scotty McCreery... Wife loves him

Obviously i'm sure there others, but these are some of my faves. The one thing about Idol, is that you don't have to win the show to be hugely successful. And many times the singers who appear to be the best singer don't win. I thought Latoya London would easily be the winner that year. But her,J hud, and Fantasia were all in the bottom 3. Go figure on that one!!

The younger contestants should know that theres always a good chance Disney or Nick may come calling.

I can't remember the last time I fast forwarded as much through an episode of idol (performance night) as I did tonight. Just a dreadful display of singing and song choices.

Jessica - once again the absolute worst singer in the group number. And then she destroyed (not in the good way) a classic Queen track, and then played the Daddy angle for faux sympathy votes on her song of choice. If she were any more boring and by-the-numbers, she'd be a Kardashian.

Skylar - I almost deleted the show from my DVR after she completely butchered a Queen song and then the judges praised it. Off-key for almost the entire song. Terrible. Send her home for that. I have no idea what that crapfest of a song was she sang as her personal choice, but it started terribly and finished just as poorly. Was it amazing in the middle? I dunno, I didn't listen to it because the beginning was such amateurish dogsh**.

Jacob...err Joshua - Hate his style of singing. Fast forwarded through 99 percent of his singing. Judges stood up after both per usual. I'm sure his usual vocal fireworks were on display.

Elise - poop on a stick. I think she's pretty. She has a nice tone. But she makes the stupidest vocal choices I've ever heard a music teacher make. She made me hate the Queen song she sang. And one of the judges claimed it was better than the original. I hope that was just a mistake on their part and they meant to say something else, because her take on the song was embarrassing. I'm stupid and thought her 2nd song was a John Mayer cover, but it was in fact a Hendrix song that Mayer made more famous than Hendrix did. Either way she turned it into a flaming bag of sh** and threw it on the collective doorstep of America. Atrocious.

Phillip "Dave Matthews" Phillips - WTF was that? First he chose Fat Bottomed Girls and then just gyrated slowly and awkwardly on stage like a puppet whose strings had all been cut except for one. Granted he'd never sing songs like that, but if you're going to sing THAT particular Queen song, feel it. You're singing about women with big asses. Look like you're singing a song about women with BIG FINE ASSES. Go kneel before the Queen of all big fine asses and sing the song. She's right there behind the judging desk. Go pay tribute to one the most legendary Fat Bottomed Girls. Then as his song of choice he bravely chose to sing a song by the guy everyone always says he's ripping off (in voice and mannerisms). Brave...and stupid. Stupid because he picked a DMB song that wasn't even a hit. Sing something people know, dummy! The only time that song works for DMB is when they turn it into a 15 minute jam Live in concert. Doing a 90 second version of it was just frickin dumb.

Hollie - Zzzzzzzzzzzz I cant even remember which Queen song she farted her way through. That's how forgettable she's become. And then she ended the show by cheating and singing a song she already sang once. Good game, coward. You're going home.

Man, I sound angry. Bad TV will do that to ya.

I was expecting the idols to not be able to sing Queen songs, but I was pleasantly surprised when most of them nailed the songs. I thought they all did a great job, except it appeared that Phillip struggled the most and didn't look comfortable at all. It was great to hear these iconic songs again and I think the contestants did a great job with them.

Man, I sound angry. Bad TV will do that to ya.

Wow, tell us what you really think. You know what makes me angry... bad, over the top reviews by people who fast forward their way through performances based on their own predetermined prejudices.

Sure, I tend to agree with you on Jessica and Joshua, but they weren't all THAT bad last night. We totally disagree on Skylar. Both of her songs were great. The judges thought so, I thought so, and for the first time in three years, I voted. Guess who I voted for... Skylar (10 times). As she sang for her first song, "The Show Must Go On," and she has definitely placed her own "Tattoos on This Town."

As for the other three, Elise was great on her Queen song (I Want it All) but not so much on that Jimi Hendrix WTF POS (Bold as Love). Philip was good on both songs, but not being much of a Dave Matthews fan, I wasn't familiar with "The Stone" but I kinda liked it. As for Hollie, she did an acceptable job on her Queen song, "Save Me" (which it probably won't) and then gave a tremendous performance on "The Climb." So what if she sang it before? Others have done that in the past and if it keeps her on the show, then good for her. Unfortunately, I think Hollie will likely be the one to go home tonight.

So, I may not be the music connoisseur you are since I only have 7,000+ songs on my iPod, but I know what I like and overall, I liked last night's show. The only two exceptions for me were Hollie's first song and Elise's second.

Regardless, IMO, it's a rare singer that can pull off a Freddie Mercury / Queen song ..

The thing about Skylar is that even when she sounds good live, which she didn't last night, her pre-recorded versions on iTunes sound awful. Ugh just remembering how terribly she shrieked her way through The Show Must Go Own makes my ears bleed.

I didn't think many performances were aweful last night, I was just bored by them. Someone has to explain something to me. WHY IS PHILIP ALLOWED TO DO THE EXACT SAME PERFORMANCE EVERY SINGLE WEEK AND NOBODY CALLS HIM ON IT? We've had country singers mix things up. We've had hard rockers in the past mix things up. He is just a joke to me now. Also, if you have been doing a Dave Matthews impression all season, and then you choose to do a Dave Mathews classic, you have to do it better than that.

Not sure if he's with the 'Queen Extravaganza' that's listed to be performing on tonight's show...

iTunes reaction to the two tracks each sang last night has Phillip with the most votes and the highest average rating. Skylar is far and away the lowest in terms of people bothering to rate her songs, and the people that did rate her rated her the worst of the bunch. If last week is any indicator, iTunes data doesn't mean anything in regards to bottom 3. Dial Idol, which was right last week and even predicted Colton being in the very bottom shows Hollie with the most votes followed by Phillip and Joshua with Jessica, Skylar and Elise being bottom 3. Elise shows up as the lowest vote getter, slightly ahead of her is Skylar. Last week Dial Idol showed Colton slightly above Elise, but we know how that turned out.

Based off that info, America clearly thought about as highly of Skylars lousy performances as I did. Was singing a Miley Cyrus song all it took to put Hollie in the top?

Personally after last night I would have guessed the bottom 3 to be Elise, Skylar, and Hollie with Elise going home.

Of all of the, "contestants make fun of each other" segments, was it just me or did the comments directed at Elise come off as more mean-spirited than playful as compared to the others? Seemed a little too aggressive, as in, this woman really is annoying to us with her stupid hand gestures and awkward giggling.

Mourning the disappearing usage of the -ly suffix. Words being cut-off before they've had a chance to fully form, left incomplete, with their shoelaces untied and their zippers undone. If I quote your post (or post in your thread) without comment, please check your zipper.

The good-I tuned in late, towards the end of Champions and thought it as good as anything I have heard on Idol in a long time, way to go Elise.

The OK-Joshua's second song, Skylar and Phillips Queen songs. Probably in that order, although I don't particularly like Joshua.

The bad-I didn't like Jessica's pandering intro to her 2nd song, I didn't like the idols making fun of Elise. I can't stand the over praise from the judges. Someone should tell Randy that even the most casual of viewers now know that Jessica is only 16.

The films of De Sica, of Welles, of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger made little money and endure as spiritual delights.
