I was surprised at the anger coming out of Carl's camp - whether he was the leader or not, he clearly jumped the restart and got nailed for it. Tony getting off the line slow just made it obvious.

I was at the race Saturday night. When Carl was the leader for the first 2 or 3 starts in the race he was jumping those as well, just not as blatant.

And I'm sure it wasn't Carl or one of his teammates that threw that bottle out on the track and caused the caution that cost Tony the win. [I love a good conspiracy theory. ]

BTW, if I had been Tony, I think I would have gambled and went with just two tires or maybe even no pit stop at all on that final caution for a couple of reasons. First, his pit crew was slow on every stop and costing him a couple of spots every time. Second, his setup was terrible at the start of each run and was best after about 15 laps. Third he only had about 20 laps on the tires and they were working well. Maybe he would have finally gotten a good launch without spinning his tires on the warmer set of tires.

This race also highlighted a pet peeve of mine: Why the hell have tire warmers been banned in all these racing series?

I'd think they be required from a safety standpoint since it's dangerous as hell having cars running around on 10lbs of air pressure in cold tires at the start of a run. But almost every racing series has banned tire warmers for some reason unknown to me.

Didn't even know there was such a thing. How does a tire warmer work (I know, Google...)?

Yeah Tony was a bit upset with his crew when talked to in the post-race interview.

So who was happy to see Kyle Busch win?

...

They're kind of like an electric blanket/cozy for tires, but they're made out of much sturdier material than a blanket. The outside looks like Tyvek or something like that. I've never seen the inside of one, so I don't know what the inside is like.

Looks like they're still popular in motorcycle racing. But I'm having problems finding anything for car racing anymore. They used to be really popular in F1.

yeah F1 uses them they literally keep them in there until right as the car comes onto pit lane. It allows them to go right back out at the same lap speeds that they came off in. F1 is the only one that allows it i think.

Yeah, they tend to use warmers on the more, you know, high performance machines. Places where throttle body fuel injection isn't seen as some new fangled performance mod

It does seem like a high speed oval would be a natural place for them safety wise. Between cost and politics I doubt you ever seem them though.

TNT HD FiOS

The Sprint Cup has moved to TNT and they keep putting annoying twitter comments in a lower third graphic at the bottom of the screen.
Please stop this! No one cares what someone on Twitter is saying about the race. Keep the clutter off the video.

There are motion artifacts on the track when the camera pans and heavy macroblocking when the camera pans with any fencing in front of it.

I agree about the twitter crap. Very annoying, and it seems like they're trying to give the impression that the drivers themselves are twittering. rolleyes.gif I'm watching via FiOS as well. I'm seeing a lot of instances of the picture completely freezing along with the audio, but I don't know if that's TNT or Verizon.

On one of the video breakups the video frame seemed to shift as if it was a breakup of the video from PA and not a FiOS problem.

TNT's broadcasts are always the crappiest technically, I just had a very loud screech of sound from something in their audio chain, scared the hell out me and I had to wonder how well my tweeters handled it, it was that loud and brittle sounding. Typical sloppy TNT broadcast.

(This should provoke some input from Mac the Knife wink.gif ) What was up with Dale jr during his post race interview? He was either very angry, or very sad. And why was there an extra caution lap during that second to last caution period? And what was that debris that caused the last caution? Big chunk of tire rubber? Hmmm... mad.gif

I don't have TNT, so I haven't seen Jr's interview.

But don't even get me started on all these phony debris cautions that miraculously only occur when the bulk of the field is due to pit or when the leader is so much faster than everyone else that the entire field is at risk of being put down a lap. mad.gif

The phony debris caution at the end of last week's race screwed Jeff Gordon out a win because he was on a different pit schedule than everyone else.

Yes, the so-called debris cautions, and what was the deal with the pit road timing lights? Who dropped the ball there? Did NASCAR fail to notify the teams of the change, or was it the team management failing to tell the drivers? And why were they changed in the first place?

Pit road at Pocono was repaved, or reconfigured from what I understand, so there may have been a problem with the markings that the drivers use to indicate when it's okay to accelerate off pit road.

The debris cautions are generally a judgement call; not something I really put too much weight on, but it seems like NASCAR is inserting itself too far and too frequently into each race anymore, and for me it's become less fun to watch. I'm becoming very disenchanted with NASCAR, again.

Maybe he's not a Dale Earnhardt Jr fan!? Just kidding. biggrin.gif

I was happy to see him finally get that win, it's been a very long time, and I believe this year they have to have at least 1 win to qualify for the Chase?

It's been 4 years since junior got a win so it was long overdue. I remain skeptical nevertheless about NASCAR. I think they're inserting themselves too far and too often into the races anymore. I was reading their message board yesterday to find out what Tony Stewart's sarcastic remarks about Dale's win were (something along the lines of... well it's not a national holiday guys... sore loser rolleyes.gif ) and any thread that criticized NASCAR got locked with not more than three posts in it.

Anyway, rant mode off, but I want to see Dale back that win up with more of the same.
