At the ComicCon interview, producers said they will address the fact within the season's storyline that they can't/won't have a third storyline about Starling City getting blown up. I imagine the city name change ties in to that. In a "let's move past our tragedies and start with a new beginning and new name".

Has a big city in real life ever changed its name like that? I mean, without some big national political takeover, like Peking to Bejing or Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City, something like that.

Peking is actually a westernization of the name "Beijing". Sort of like "Star" to "Sun".

In that case, I look forward to the season 5 plot where they decide to change the name to "Supernova City" to reflect the shenanigans from seasons 3 and 4.

I'm just glad I don't have to use the original name of my city because there's no room on an envelope:
El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula

Yes, some of the more obvious cases of a city changing its name:

Constantinople -> Istanbul
Peking -> Beijing
Bombay -> Mumbai

Anyway, is this a thread on Arrow or what?

And maybe the all-time champ of municipal name changing:

St. Petersburg (1703) to Petrograd (1914) to Leningrad (1924) then back to St. Petersburg (1991).

Hey, Team Ollie is on hiatus. So geography class is in session.

And very earlier on in its history it was probably called "this side" and "that side".

Well Ollie woke up in Hong Kong in the season finale and the original name of the capital Victoria city was Queenstown.

I wonder if there is an intentional joke in choosing that location?

Humm ... I'm reasonably sure these last two aren't so much "changes" as they are "corrections" to reflect the native language pronunciation ... as opposed to colonial English.

Yes, that has always been my understanding as well, the last two are anglicized versions of the same name.

True, but I used those two as examples because they're big, famously-named cities that have changed names. I'm sure there's still a lot of 'murica that thinks there's both a Mumbai and a Bombay without realizing they're the same place, for instance.

And apparently Istanbul has more or less been the real name all along.

Istanbul was Constantinople ?

Agreed. Chinese grad students told me so in the late 1980s. Strangely, in french Pékin is still used instead of Beijing!

Been binge watching the first season. Only have two episodes left. I have to admit, I like this more than I thought I would. Now waiting for Netflix to get season 2.
