At the ComicCon interview, producers said they will address the fact within the season's storyline that they can't/won't have a third storyline about Starling City getting blown up. I imagine the city name change ties in to that. In a "let's move past our tragedies and start with a new beginning and new name".

Has a big city in real life ever changed its name like that? I mean, without some big national political takeover, like Peking to Bejing or Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City, something like that.

Peking is actually a westernization of the name "Beijing". Sort of like "Star" to "Sun".

In that case, I look forward to the season 5 plot where they decide to change the name to "Supernova City" to reflect the shenanigans from seasons 3 and 4.

I'm just glad I don't have to use the original name of my city because there's no room on an envelope:
El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula

Yes, some of the more obvious cases of a city changing its name:

Constantinople -> Istanbul
Peking -> Beijing
Bombay -> Mumbai

Anyway, is this a thread on Arrow or what?

And maybe the all-time champ of municipal name changing:

St. Petersburg (1703) to Petrograd (1914) to Leningrad (1924) then back to St. Petersburg (1991).

Hey, Team Ollie is on hiatus. So geography class is in session.

And very earlier on in its history it was probably called "this side" and "that side".

Well Ollie woke up in Hong Kong in the season finale and the original name of the capital Victoria city was Queenstown.

I wonder if there is an intentional joke in choosing that location?

Humm ... I'm reasonably sure these last two aren't so much "changes" as they are "corrections" to reflect the native language pronunciation ... as opposed to colonial English.

Yes, that has always been my understanding as well, the last two are anglicized versions of the same name.

True, but I used those two as examples because they're big, famously-named cities that have changed names. I'm sure there's still a lot of 'murica that thinks there's both a Mumbai and a Bombay without realizing they're the same place, for instance.

And apparently Istanbul has more or less been the real name all along.

Istanbul was Constantinople ?

Agreed. Chinese grad students told me so in the late 1980s. Strangely, in french Pékin is still used instead of Beijing!

Been binge watching the first season. Only have two episodes left. I have to admit, I like this more than I thought I would. Now waiting for Netflix to get season 2.

I much prefer how she looked during her Supernatural Ruby years as a blond.

Wow! You can say THAT again. I could hardly believe that it was the same actress! Even now, when I see reruns of Supernatural with her, she looks so very much better than she does on Arrow.

Amusingly there was a post before mine that I was replying to but it seems to have been deleted.

Just wanted to point out I didn't just start rambling on about Katie Cassidy from out of nowhere.

VisionOn-The posting that disappeared was mine. I was pointing out the difference in appearance of her earlier days and now. After posting it, I decided (about 4 minutes later) that the pictures I chose weren't really representative. So, I deleted it. But, during that time interval, you had already responded. I apologize if that tripped you up. I didn't realize anybody would respond that quickly. As to the topic-as all seem to have agreed, Katie definitely looked better in the past (no matter what color her hair was). It would be interesting to know why (at least to me) she now looks so gaunt.

Thanks a lot! In the meantime people were under the impression I have become some aging loon just randomly muttering to myself about Supernatural and how Katie Cassidy was much better in the good old days before CW came along!

I did that much earlier in this thread probably.

It was worse for me, I looked up Ruby in Supernatural and I found Genevieve Padalecki and I was really wandering around in the forest trying to figure out what we were talking about, I thought I was or you were in the wrong thread completely. I finally went back and found another Ruby and another Ruby in Supernatural and finally figured out who the conversation was about.

Jared Padalecki liked Katie Cassidy's replacement so much that he married her!

First Katie gets bumped from Supernatural, then her Arrow sister bumps her from the hot Canary role. She just keeps getting replaced. Can't catch a break on CW.

I did too (look back in the thread to make sure you were actually talking about Katie Cassidy). I wrote my reply before I read VisionOn's post with the photographs.

I wouldn't say gaunt exactly, but she looks like she fell into a vat of botox. Her facial expressions have diminished to the point that she looks like a mannequin or something.

Oh, and rebkell, YES, there were two Ruby's on Supernatural. Ruby was actually a demon inhabiting host bodies, so when one was destroyed, the demon just chose another. The first was Katie, and the second was Genevieve, who I didn't like as much in the role.
