I think the "explanation" was that in addition to the mine collapsing, the rock transmogrified into something the human/votan drills could not penetrate, so they still needed the omec tech to get at the gulanite. Why they couldn't just kill the two, use what was already mined and work out the tech controls? Drama (and ethics).

Correct, that is what they said on the show that their tech/tools could not cut through that new material.

The gulanite floating in the air, surrounded by what looked like a force field, may have put the kibosh on killing the purple pair.

I hope they don't drag the pacifist/penitent Irisa story line out too long. Just when I thought we might get back to the Irisa from the first few episodes - quiet, efficiently lethal, low-drama.

And it looks like another Stahma dalliance -- she has a huge blind-spot with that.

Agree, I want Super Irisa, not this wimpy version.

No "blind-spot."
She knows exactly what she is doing.

There were a few other eye-rolling instances with this episode...
Irisa taking the baby into battle.
1 rifle and 6 hand grenades against 100 men and artillery pieces.
Pretty dumb and certainly NOT credible.

They are just playing with us. At crunch time I'm sure they will flip the Hell unleashed switch on Irisa.

I'm not sure they know what to do with her. She was such a central character in the first two seasons, but they played out what made her interesting, and now she must necessarily be different. I think she probably has to become a minor character. Only they killed off enough characters last season and the beginning of this one without creating many good new ones.

I'm surprised that no one has ever mentioned the weakness of the energy fence. They show this big gun to shoot at the fence in order to bring it down.

All they need to do is shoot normal explosives at the sides, where the emitters are exposed. Blow up the emitters and down goes the fence.

Well, after they have their run at her [character growth / penitence for NYC], I think returning her to her role in the first couple episodes would accomplish both
  • unseen, quiet, and efficiently lethal = Deus Ex Irisa = the writer's pal
  • low-drama = one liners / expressions = screen-time of a minor character but important to keep Nolan grounded

Have you watched the first two seasons? All they ever do is drag out annoying storylines with her. Irisa has been a wet blanket character from day one.

Was it just me, or was the Omec makeup different in this episode? He looked a lot less purple than he did before.

He did look like he had lost his bloom. In the previous episode he looked almost iridescent.

Is a Sharknado heading towards Defiance? Have no fear, Fin himself (Ian Ziering) will appear in Episode 6. We can only hope he brings his chainsaw.

I noticed that after Stahma's bad news/good news gig (the bad news is that the Omec is not dead but the good news is that he gave you a rip roaring good time in the sack) her skin tone was much more natural and flesh colored. The Omec must really be good
