Do not expect 5.1 audio during the performances, as they are being mixed only in stereo. No center channel, no Lfe and the surround is ambient audio.

The talking heads are in the center channel. Even when Stevie Wonder gives his thanks after singing, they put his mic in the center channel. When they start playing again, his mic is moved back to left/right equal mix.

Oh well.

A music program on TV basically in stereo....in 2012
I don't hold out high hopes for a macroblocking free picture either, with 2 SD subs I'm quite sure it won't be up to my local CBS standards(no subs) but we'll see, I've got it setup to record. I'm a sucker for event shows, especially musical ones

Ya, there is the macroblocking issue. My local ABC affiliate not only has two subs, but has set aside 5 Mbps for the stupid mobile crap.

Does not even look like it is in HD. Looks more like upscaled SD, or watching a DVD on a HD set. ABC is the worst of all broadcast networks.

Must be something with your affiliate because it is most definitely 720p and not upscaled SD. While I prefer 1080 for real HD, this is 720p. There is nothing wrong with ABC's 720p, not only for this show but all the stuff they air..

If you're going to make comments like this, you must differentiate between your local ABC affiliate and what other see across the country. How many subchannels does your ABC affiliate have?

Oops! While they fixed the lyrics in the telepromter issue (it was stuck on the bridge lyrics during rehearsal), she was supposed drop into the floor through a cloud of stage smoke. But, no smoke.

Oops, the "she" os Katy Perry.

Are the Billboard Music Awards having a tribute to Donna Summer?

Just started watching. Anyone have severe distortion in the rears? Maybe a local issue with KNXV? Via directv

Must be you, as I'm monitoring the local ABC affiliate and no issues here.

I thought it was kind of poor audio wise....some decent performances....Carrie Underwood did way better with Blown Away then she did on American Idol.

That was a nice surprise

Oh well.

Was the show produced by the same people who did the Country Music Awards on CBS?
That show had people talking in the center channel and the performances were stereo.

I have no clue, as I do not go anywhere near the CMAs.

Natasha Bedingfield sang "Last Dance" in honor of her. I'm sure they didn't have time to put together a full package.

And it was an awful choice to sing that song. Seriously, they couldn't find anyone else that sounded a little more like Donna?

We watched for the hell of it because we like music award shows and nothing else was on anyway, but this one has to be the worst between this, the Grammys and the AMAs. Seriously, when Taylor Swift is winning Woman of the Year (stop constantly looking surprised you moron) and Justin Beiber and LMFAO are serious contenders for a bunch of awards, you know only kids with bad taste are the ones voting. Yeah, I know it's not voting, but it is determined by charts and social media that the kids have control over.

Which is why I said that they weren't doing a tribute.

Oh it's definitely HD, not as sharp as some other networks but for sure more than upconverted SD. Personally I think FOX(except for live sports which is very good) is a little softer than ABC but of course depends on your market. I was pleasantly surprised at how little macroblocking I had in my market, with 2 SD subs I thought it would be fairly bad but that was not the case. CBS in my market while razor sharp tends to macroblock with strobes like they have on these type of event shows even though my station has no subs. Personally I'll take razor sharp and suffer the occasional macroblocking but I can really see how 720p is more forgiving of a lower bitrate and or more subs
