FiOS TV NYC.

Soccer is on MSNBC, NBCSN and the NBC Soccer Channel today.
The biggest surprise, the audio on NBCSN is DD 5.1.
Ironically the audio on the NBC Sports Soccer Channel is not. It's the simulated DD 5.1.
Odd that NBCSN can do DD 5.1 for the Olympics can but the Olympics Soccer channel can't.

I missed the first match on MSNBC, I'll check the next match at 2:30pm for DD 5.1 audio.

Graphics are formatted for 4:3. On NBCSN The standard NBC Olympics bug is on the top right.
The Soccer Channel has no bug.

PQ on NBCSN and NBC Soccer Channel is good.
A little macro blocking on very fast movement.

So the opening ceremony ONLY on NBC primetime? or live on CNBC or NBCOlympics.com?

Everywhere else in the world: LIVE

Soccer audio on MSNBC is DD 5.1.

It seems there is no live video on TV or the internet for the Opening Ceremonies in the USA.
I'm guessing Canada is showing the ceremony live.

It's not a competition that can be spoiled with results - let it be on TV when most can watch.

So be it.

And a voice from the host city - we're being spoiled this year.

We have BBC One/BBC One HD and BBC Three/BBC HD broadcasting pretty much continuous coverage of the games plus and additional 24 HD and 24 16:9 SD streams on satellite (free of charge - no subscription required), cable, Smart TV and via the web for those suitably equipped. Yep - we have BBC One, BBC Three and BBC Olympics 1-BBC Olympics 24. (BBC Two and BBC Four are Olympics free zones)

As someone who has been known to defend NBC.. I'm pissed at this one. Their promotion of the online coverage made it sound like it would include the ceremonies. Which makes me wonder if that was an honest mistake or something that just got lost in translation closer to games time.

Either way.. I have no problem with NBC only showing it in primetime on TV and not live in the afternoon, let alone on a cable network. But at least give us the option of watching online. Give it to us without commentary so that it's a different product than what gets shown on TV. Isn't that the draw of the rest of the online coverage? Don't give us this nonsense that we need context. Social media and dozens of websites can do that for us.

This is television. It has nothing to do with people, it's to do with ratings! For fifty years, we've told them what to eat, what to drink, what to wear. So what do we do? We give 'em what they want!

I don't know if it's an issue with the way NBC is archiving the events, the PQ on the rebroadcasts of the Women's Soccer matches on NBCSN and NBC Soccer Channel are terrible.
Grainy video with motion artifacts and macroblocking.

The Men's and Women's football has been fine live in the UK in PQ terms.

Honduras vs Morocco live on BBC Olympics 3 HD at the moment.

(In bitrate terms the BBC are broadcasting 4 HD streams per DVB-S2 transponder. Each transponder delivers 43.9Mbs - so I guess that makes an average of 11Mbs for each MPEG4/H264+audio stream - though they may be statmuxing and if so the other channels are running holding captions so may be delivering a higher bitrate to channels carrying real content)

Telemundo HD WNJU-DT NYC audio on the soccer matches is stereo.

MSNBC and NBCSN are DD 5.1
NBC Soccer Channel is still simulated DD 5.1.

Just to give you guys a Canadian perspective, as opposed to a U.S. of A. perspective.

The rights holder CTV will be pretty much inheriting the CBC model, which had worked very well in the past. The opening ceremony will be shown live at 4:00 pm on the east coast , and again at 7:30 pm for the benefit of people who are late arriving home. So at 7:30, Canadians will have a choice of CTV (again) or NBC (which will stretch three and a half hours into four and a half hours of delayed coverage).

I watched a very small bit of the what I assume was "live" coverage of the men's match yesterday AM ... same stuff ... far worse than the even the darkest days of HDLite on D*.

Mexico will have the 2 major TV networks and their several channels covering most events live, all HD where available (Televisa's Channel "five" is not carried in HD in several cities).

In my neck of the woods I'll have plenty of choices in this order

Mexico's networks HD coverage
Telemundo's coverage
NBC coverage (I'll probably only watch live events and recaps of what I missed)
NBC Olympics . com

I'm upset that I have to be a cable/satellite subscriber to watch the streams online. How does that make any sense? If I got the channels, I'd watch it on my TV.

Because a number of the events, especially swimming, will be only shown on tape-delay so online streaming gives you a chance to watch it, plus others live.

I'm a 'hooker' and a knitter. I guess that makes me bi-stitchual :). Crap I say

No, his question was why does he have to be a cable/satellite subscriber in order to be able to take advantage of the live online streams on NBCOlympics.com.

My guess is that it must have been some concession that NBC granted them, since the infrastructure required to deliver 100% online live content to many millions of potential viewers is going to require quite a commitment from the ISP's, i.e. the content delivery system.

You're right, I read it wrong and I apologize. Good question though and I'd like to have an answer to it. I have cable and can see everything but it sucks for those who want to watch the events and don't have it. I'm sure some feeds will show up somewhere though as I am watching the opening live right now.

Just watched about 20 mins of the opening ceremony, one was a BBC feed and it was very nice as there was no on-air talent blabbering away while the show was going on, just the stadium announcer. The other feed must have been an American-destined feed as the usual yakety-yak was, as usual, doing nothing to enhance the performance.

Well I'm sure it's money related. You know, "you wash my back and I'll wash yours".

By requiring a cable/satellite subscription, you could force people who don't currently have cable/satellite to sign up for service... just so that they could get the live streams. New revenue source, for the content distributors who will be expected to provide high-quality streams to a huge number of computers watching live online. I don't know how many people fall into this category, but NBC is now owned by Comcast so who knows how they think about things... other than in terms of dollars of profit.

Must not be a full 36 MHz transponder, as they could have done 72 Mbps total xponder bitrate, using 8PSK. Could have gone higher, but most do not as it makes it more difficult to receive.

If it is a full 36 MHz xponder, then it would seem that they are using QPSK, which is very uncommon for DVB-S2.

I will wait for other countries feed to watch it just like the last Olympics. The North American feeds are worthless PQ wise.

I watched the Opening Ceremonies today live on the BBC in full HD and it looked GREAT!

You can see pictures of the PQ at http://www.satelliteguys.us/dish-forum/288877-dish-going-provide-nbc-3d-channel-12.html#post2929138 On my 50" TV it looked great as well (and I hate to say it.. but this Singbox video quality almost seemed better then HD quality I have seen lately from both DIRECTV and DISH!

Funny part was I did it sitting here at my office in Connecticut. I watched via a HD Slingbox pro HD which is connected to a Sky+HD Satellite Receiver in London.

There is a company in London which offers this Slingbox hosting service and that is who I am using. The company is called uktv2c.com. So far no complaints at all with them or their service and it has been working extremely well.

For those wondering the HD stream from the Slingbox Pro HD is around 5 MB. I have a 30 MB connection at home and have had ZERO buffering or PQ loss.

I am watching it on CTV in full HD too, but I beg to disagree with the previous post. It was not one of the best opening ceremonies in memory. There were some funny parts, a couple of surprises. But nothing really both profound and memorable at the same time.

It started at 4:03 pm EST, and it is now 7:18. The President of the IOC has finished his speech. The Queen has just declared the games open. I estimate the ceremony still has another half hour to go.

NBC is rightly getting a lot of flak on Facebook for not airing or even streaming the opening ceremony live. Nobody needs the pointless padding NBC have added, they should have gone live like seemingly every other country has done.

I've already seen the news elsewhere so I'm skipping the rest of this. probably full of ads anyway.
