Alternately... it could be "coincidence" in that whomever is writing the letters may have been expecting something to happen... but since Rusty had been hiding the letters, nothing was changing... so maybe the person decided to send a letter to Sharon instead and up the ante not knowing that Rusty's world had just caved in already.

That was not a great episode to return with. As soon as the that teacher appeared wearing a shirt skirt I knew she was having an affair with the kid and her husband did it. This episode was not helped by the unimaginative direction. The wife dressed like she was ready to go and the husband looked like he had a library full of biographies of repressed and buttoned-down psychos.

Plus Rusty was at his most annoying too.

Yes, Rusty was annoying -- but how should he be? If you were a 17 year old kid in that situation I'd bet you act in a somewhat similar manner, odds are I would. We can argue the point is the character really necessary, but the writers needed some way to humanize Sharon, and this has been effective.

He should have more dimensions than a piece of card. In terms of child characters on screen he has the most potential to be mature and interesting but the show drops the ball constantly. His primary dialog each week is to complain about his police escort. I can't even remember what trial he is supposed to be involved in or if the letter writer is supposed to be related.

The show should put him in therapy just to give him some fresh dialog and the actor some new facial reactions to do.

Well they did just that tonight. Well done. The Dr. looked familiar, have not IMDB'd him so I don't know where I've seen him before.

And in contrast to last week thanks to adding Bill Brochtrup to the cast his scenes with Rusty were the best part of the episode. It even resulted in another good scene with Sharon.

The rest of the episode was quite stylish in places but I figured the father did it in the first five minutes. I thought the daughter would be involved too based on all the overcompensating she was doing.

A bit of an NYPD Blue reunion this week with Brochtrup, Esai Morales and the director.

Excellent call back to the earlier episode with Provenza and his range qualification! Neat way to bookend the season. Rusty flipping the defense question on the stand was clever too.

I still can't tell if the Stroh case is actually over. If it is what are they going to do with Rusty now? If he's still with Raydor then that allows him to be in the show but if he doesn't need security he has no need to hang around the squad room now. Is he going to be stuck in his own world of school teen angst or is he going to be kidnapped or threatened with something else every other week?

With any luck at all, Rusty will segue into a background character.

I think he needs to stay, just not front and center. You could tell Provenza really wants to be a father figure for him, and he seems to have connected with most of the charters, but a less prominent story line is in order.

Even so, that seemed like an insanely crazy shot to take from that range with that type of weapon, I was certain it was Sanchez who made the shot and shocked that it turned out to be Provenza, but it's TV...

I think that was the intention. It kind of reminded me of the end of Die Hard. I thought it was risky too but as a story payoff I thought it worked.

Anyone else notice that Sanchez was using a reflex sight but the hokey onscreen graphic made it appear as if it was some kind of scope? And when did Sanchez become the designated LAPD marksman? During the SIS op he seemed to be the only guy available for the job. Does he moonlight with a tactical unit when he's not being a detective specializing in gangs? biggrin.gif

If anyone wants to leave feedback such as "more Bill Brochtrup, less Nadine Valasquez" you can do so here.

Great way that he sucked Jeri Ryan's character into getting the letters admitted.

Yes, very, although I felt sure I had the culprit picked out earlier, or at least was involved somehow.

I haven't seen a thread for it yet but Steven Bocho's "Murder in the First" which followed "Major Crimes" looked interesting.

Good to see they are trying to make Sykes into a character that people care about. I still don't but at least they are giving her stories.

Same with Julio. Every season they try and give him something to do, this year it appears he's going to be going to anger management at some point.

A mixed season so far. Started well for me and Rusty is being well used but then the Dick Tracy story happened. A character from The Closer I could not remember at all, in a story that was just multiple levels of bad even for the obligatory Flynn/Provenza episode.

You don't remember Dick Tracy, I can't remember enough of the details, but he was a hoot or at least he was to me. I've been pleased with Major Crimes, I wasn't sure how I would like it after Brenda Leigh left, but I'm ok with it. The Doc has sure got Rusty's number.

My feeling is we are being "Rusty'd" to death. They're attempting to humanize the Captain - to make her more rounded than the driven Closer - but shoving the crime investigations into a secondary role to fulfill that goal.

I had hopes that Rusty would fade after they caught/killed the letter writer. I understand the need for side arcs, but Rusty has had his run. Send the kid to college.

I checked IMDB to see if the actor playing Rusty was related to any of the producers, Didn't find a connection. The Rusty storyline is about as compelling as hemorrhoids.

In contrast I think this is the least annoying Rusty has ever been. After two seasons of "butIdonwannapoliceescort!!!" and not being obviously gay I'm quite happy the show is finally just being straightforward with his character and interacting with other characters on a more genuine level.
