The score box is smaller. The teams on the score box are now top and bottom instead of left and right..

So that's what is different? I do, however, think this is the best I have ever seen the Georgia Dome on TV. Even in person the lighting there just seems off, but tonight it looks pretty good. I'm watching via Comcast on FOX 5 HD (WAGA-HD)

carry on with your HD-Lite Directv loving banter! <--Comedy Gold

I noticed the other day at my parents house who have DirecTV, that during one of their preseason games produced by one of the local stations, that NFLN, was in windowbox format for standard definition. With that said, is it too much to hope that the NFL has finally relinquished their edict on Fox, so that Fox can present the scorebox outside the 4:3 safe zone and put it all the way in the corner for HDTVs?

And the FOUL!

Why change it? The old one worked better. Hopefully this is just for the preseason.

I hope this carries over to baseball. I hate the left/right score format. When I go a game in person, the stadium scoreboard always has them in the standard box-score format -- visiting team on top, home on the bottom. No reason to veer from this time-tested format. (IMHO).

It's not. If FOX tries something during pre-season, odds are it will show up during the regular season.

If nothing else, it’s easier for the mind to compute, which makes the score instantaneous. I like it; it’s more aesthetically pleasing to my eye. The time and quarter separating the score, plus the team emblems made it more difficult for that instantaneous recognition, at least it did for me. I want to concentrate on the game and where I placed my beer, not deciphering scoreboards. smile.gif

I have to say, I actually prefer the old one as well.

Agree. Prefer the traditional visiting team score stacked over home team score format. Also, the down & distance area seems smaller, which makes the overall box smaller. I am in favor of any reduction in size of screen clutter, logos, tickers, etc....

I think I preferred the look of the old one better. But more importantly, why can't they move it closer to the top? Clearly it's not 4:3 safe, so its letterboxed on 4:3 TV's so there is no need to protect for large analog overscan. I have a DLP that always overscans about 5 or 6% and there's still tons of wasted space. Also, will it be (relatively) near the corner for all games, or will it be like last year with most games 4:3 safe?

Somewhat related.

Do we know if all Sunday FOX games will be 16:9, or just the "A" games?

Just my own hunch, but with both Fox NFL games this week having 16:9 graphics and NFL Network switching to 16:9, I think the chances are good that the NFL will finally allow Fox to present all games with 16:9 graphics.

Agree. Don't care what it looks like as long as it is easy to read and fewer pixels than its predecessor. Though I will say I liked how the old one used the team logo instead of just letters.

Remember the bad old days when they only flash the box score occasionally? Let's go back to that!!

Plasma TV owners will thank them.

Never in a million years. In this day of instant information, people want to know the score and they want to know it NOW. Just like it really doesn't matter if graphics are formatted for 16:9 or 4:3. So long as the presentation is enjoyable for everyone, whether it be SD or HD (remember there are tons of people who still have 4:3 standard def screens.

I don't see that happening for the simple reason that the NFL is broadcast internationally. Unless they do dual graphics for EVERY game, expect to see 4:3 graphics around for a little while longer.

I believe in the past they have had a backhaul feed with 4:3 graphics when its a game with 16:9 graphics.

I am waiting for them to put the score and time digitally on the field like they do the down and distance. That would either be perfect or it would fail miserably.

There's no technical reason they can't do it now, it's just a terrible idea. That information doesn't belong on the field.
