Note to the stage production crew, the motion in the generic blue swirling background behind Christie is making me seasick. Very distracting. At one point Christie looked like he was in a fun house mirror. It might look fine in the convention venue, but when close up from the HD broadcasters it looks bad. IIRC Ann Romney had a non-moving background that was fine. Watching on PBS on a 50" 1080p display.

(I add the usual disclaimer, please do not to discuss politics, just the technical aspects of the production)

Forgot to say the microphones PBS is using for the commentators in the booth sound bad. Sounds like they shoved the mic up their nose. CNN seems to sound a bit better with the same style of mic.

Great picture on CSPAN HD and they don't talk over speeches.

Agreed. Today motion graphics are truly on steroids. It's overkill.

Not sure what the logic is, but Pawlenty had the muted, non swirling background, but the next speaker Huckabee has the swirling crap going round.

If they use that swirling background behind the headliners Ryan or Romney, they should be fired.

... and next up, Condoleeza Rice has the muted background...

PBS ran a commercial at the high point of Rice's speech, she wasn't finished yet. Bizarre. Watching WVIZ Cleveland.

...ok, Gwen Ifill apologized for the screwup at the end of the broadcast.

I agree on the background. On Tuesday it kept changing while people were speaking and it was very distracting.
It was better Wednesday. They need to stop using animated backgrounds during speeches.

It's hard to tell, but based on the size and brightness, I'm assuming it's an LED panel similar to what jumbotrons/score panels use. They use an array of LED segments (often with a tricolor group of LEDs under a single lens) about the size of pencil erasors. They're much cheaper to make that big than LCD panels and brighter than projection systems. They also avoid many of the issues with glare and reflectivity of the panels.

You can also curve them and make them in various odd shapes.

The downside is you can't get too close to them or you see the individual LED arrays - which gives new meaning to the "screen door effect". Text also needs to be quite large to avoid looking blocky.

I think you're right. From the Tampa Bay Times Forum website:

"New Daktronics LED digital signs with 360-degree views. A total of 14 new LED displays offer up 1.7 million square pixels for pure viewing pleasure."

The color on CNN is different from all the other networks on the pool camera shots.

Something's wrong with my TV perhaps. I think I saw Clint Eastwood babbling to an empty chair. Was there at least supposed to be a CNN-esque hologram sitting there? That was some of the oddest **** I've seen in quite some time. And I watch HBO.

There was an audio problem too. Evidently there was a response suggesting about what to do with themselves. I heard it was a three word phrase starting with GO and ending with YOURSELF. My guess is, as Clint Eastwood has been in show business for so long, that it must be a reference to a movie.

As a big Eastwood fan, it sucks that he's going to be remembered for this (as well as for his long career of making great movies). A part of me hopes he was just punking the entire political system.

As a guy who has been an actor his whole life, apparently he has forgotten the value of rehearsing his shtick.

He's a movie actor. They do lots of takes. He doesn't talk much in his movies anyway. He famously ripped out pages of dialogue while filming the Sergio Leone westerns.

Also, if you watch the awards shows, actors are not necessarily good public speakers. It's a skill that needs to be practiced and honed, like anything else.
