Don't know if it has been posted before but AV Club has a nice article comparing "Sherlock" to "Elementary":

Thanks for the link! I share the author's high regard for Elementary. In fact, I think it is the best show running on a Big 4 network these days. Nevertheless, his central thesis that the show is better than the BBC's Sherlock left me shaking my head. Sherlock is iconic television, which honors the tropes of the master, Arthur Conan Doyle, while putting modern and often funny twists on the master's originals. Elementary takes more liberties with the Doyle stories. As the author of the linked piece observes, this gives the writers of the US show more latitude in the way they tell their tales but robs us of the pleasure of the sly but funny way Sherlock updates Doyle's originals. Going to watch the first episode of the new season of Sherlock tonight and can hardly wait! What the hell, though, both shows are terrific and I'm grateful. smile.gif

Recent rating drop may endanger this series.
I hope not.

Is the audio for this show extremely low for anyone else? I have to turn my volume way up to hear any of the dialog on every episode. All other CBS shows are fine so it's not an issue with my CBS affiliate.

Pretty well had to put on closed captioning to follow this show.

Damn New York accents. smile.gif

Personally I've got no problems with the audio....except with a slight issue with any CBS 5.1 audio show that I haven't had DirecTV look into as yet.

They are mumbling plus very fast speech from Holmes.

That is way it's the last show on the block for me.

I continue to hugely enjoy Elementary. and thought this week's show, with Joan turned into a damsel in distress and the devious Mycroft doing his devious thing, was wonderful. It was as exciting and funny as ever but I thought the red herrings frequently thrown at us were fun when we finally learned at the end that Mycroft was really a British secret agent man, whose pose as a struggling restauranteur in bed with criminals was just a ruse to draw in the crooks.

As usual, Jonny Lee Miller's performance as Sherlock was a wonder. When he was moving around the body of the guy the Swiss security guy killed, I was amazed by how graceful he was but funny at the same time.

I ordinarily become very tired of Big Four Network shows sometime during the second season, at the latest, because there is usually no way to maintain quality when 24 episodes are aired every season. Elementary, though, just keeps getting better, although only two episodes remain to be aired in Season 2.

Has anyone noticed that they occasionally switch back and forth between the old opening (with the marble rolling through the maze) and the new one? Is this a case of a show once again being shown out of order or is there a known reason why they have done this?

I believe it has to do with the length of the episode. Sometimes they just need that extra minute.

This week's show was another great hour of television. I like the Joan-Mycroft romance but can't believe that Joan is really going to move out on Sherlock. Anyway, the acting, writing and directing of Elementary continue to be top notch.

Agreed. One of the best shows on the broadcast networks with a great cast, and enough plot twists and turns to keep it interesting. Mycroft's story arc has been great.

I like Mycroft and his story arc has been great. But I just can't get on board with the Watson thing. Does he have some secret MI6 love potion? Maybe the same serum that Timothy Dalton used to convince people he could be James Bond? tongue.gif
