A good season for the doctor. This is my third time seeing the 2005 Dr. Who, the first being the once-free Itunes episode from the 2010 season (without ads!!!), and the second being the xmas special from 2011 which borrowed from Narnia. The 2012 season opener has elements borrowed from Empire Strikes Back (the robot eye popping out of the snow), and the Daleks are more menancing than ever. I like the end of the show, when Dr. Who gets questioned by the Daleks. All in all, good special effects, decent sound mixing, and a fast pace. The only thing i didn't like is the british accents; at least i have to deal with it, it's a wholly british show aimed at sci-fi nerds. Can't wait to see next week's episode, which will feature the Doctor facing dinosaurs!!! Hopefully Fios offers Dr. Who on demand in hd without commercials, the way the BBC shows it on TV in england as well as in australia.

Outside of seeing a few episodes late at night in my youth, my exposure to the Doctor started with the reboot. So this is a novice question: Has the phrase "Doctor Who" ever been uttered before by a character in the show like it was by the Daleks and the doctor himself in this episode? I can't remember ever hearing him referred to as anything but "the doctor." (which of course leads to the response "Who?")

I saw the season opener in HD on Space (Canadian TV rights holder, www.spacecast.com). This being an advertiser-supported channel (unlike the BBC), there were 4 breaks -- chosen by Space, I think. The entire show ran 48 minutes 53 seconds, fitted into a 65-minute time slot (it was advertised as 9:00 pm -10:00 pm, but ended at 10:05 pm as I had suspected/anticipated, hope everyone extended their DVR recordings). Can anyone tell if 48:53 represents the entire length of the episode on BBC? Thanks.

JCL, I timed the BBC America broadcast last night and got the same time minus commercials. Last year, BBCA said all new Who episodes would air unedited on premiere night, so I'm sure we got the BBC version, just with commercials.

I have the BBC broadcast at 47:51 without the previews, 48:45 including previews and end credits.

From time to time, but not as repetitively as this time. wink.gif

I thought last season (series) the Silence said the one question that must be answered was, "Who is Doctor Who?"

I'm sure the British wouldn't be too thrilled with your accent, especially if it is a NY or Boston accent. wink.gif

I thought the show was just fine. Thanks for pointing out the Star Wars references, I didn't quite catch that.

I don't think we've seen the last of 'that nice looking lady'
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Yes and no...

Typically on the premiere airings (and possibly repeat airings on premiere night) they usually have sponsorship to air with less commercials so they can show the episode uncut. Repeat airings after that, however, are usually cut to fit the timeslot.

Disappointing. I don't understand why networks do this(PBS and BBCA are the two off the top of my head that I know do it). My internet is too slow for netflix HD as well, so I'm stuck with on demand

Space in Canada does not do this. The new Doctor Who episodes air in 65 minute time-slots (premiere and repeats). They also run old "Star Trek" episodes unedited.

The reason is simple... money... they get sponsorship for the premiere airing because they know that gets a big audience. Repeats get a smaller audience, so to make more money they sell more commercial space... and some of the show and end credits go in order to make room. I don't like it, but it's not hard to understand why it happens.

Just want to say I'll be sad to see Amy leave, she looked amazing in the premiere, but the actress who will play the new companion is beautiful also.

Loved the premiere. Great ending.

Last season had a 30 minute DVR buffer and towards the end I was worried that I would catch up to real time. There were a ton of commercials. Usually 90 minutes equates to about 24 minutes of commercials. FX piled on.

I'll be glad to see Amy go... and am hoping for better plots after that... I've only found the first halves of the last two series to be good, the second halves have been let downs for the most part.

I'll say it took a season for me to like Matt as a Doctor and it took Amy to get me there. Now I can't wait for her to be gone.

Totally agree with that. The writing has seemed subpar compared to the Davis years, which is really odd since Moffat was arguably the best writer on the show during that time. Maybe my expectations are too high because I've loved evereything else he's done-Jeckyl, Sherlock, the Who episodes...whatever it is I've never fully connected to the show or to Matt Smith. I've also found Rory much more interesting and sympathetic than Amy, which also seems odd to me.

Rory is pretty damn cool. I'd love to see more of that Roman storyline.

Rory was badass in 'A Good Man Goes To War'. "I have a message from The Doctor, and a question from me."

Yeah, I've enjoyed Rory too by and large. He's certainly been an improvement over some other campanion boyfriends like that guy - Micky? - who dragged down every Rose episode he was in. He was such a whining weenie.

As to Sneals spoiler above... Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I was hoping it was her but she is sort of, you know, dead. Although since the Doctor can travel though time, I suppose that's not really an issue and might provide some tension via the ethics of saving her from the Daleks and thus potentially changing history, that sort of thing.

just wanted to say that, as is often the case, Sneals has it right.

posted my thoughts on the subject in the Season 6 thread so if any Doctor Who newbies(Whobies?) would prefer not to hear-avoid that
thread at all costs!!!!wink.gif

I already knew as well, but you might consider that those who subscribe to this thread have most likely also been subscribed to the thread from the previous series.

Plus they would probably watch S6 (and read the thread) before 7 . I don't really see why it would be anymore a spoiler for a "whobie"(like that).than anyone else anyways.

agreed, but from some of the comments following Sneals' post it seemed like maybe a few folks weren't following the posts re: changes
to the cast et. al.
